Someone recently described Boris Johnson on here as an Alpha Male, many others disagreed

Who is your idea of an Alpha Male? To me it's someone who is: Strong, Successful, Good Looking, Confident but not afraid to show a softer, caring side.

My list so far:

Rafa Nada
Keanu Reeves
Prof Brian Cox
Marcus Rashford
Steve Backshall
Will Kirk (The Repair Shop)

Peter Jones from Dragons Den?

I’m afraid ‘Alpha" isn’t an all-round rating of virtue and quality. Just of dominance.

BlueBelle Mon 28-Jun-21 12:32:38

Sidney Poitier you must be joking Dorcas he was a great actor and a good looking geyser but he wasn’t a trumped up chest thumping alpha male He wasn’t a nasty over, dominant, belittling woman type at all he was a bit of a ‘cooor’
juicylucy that’s not the definition of an Alpha male at all look it up

Alistair Campbell. I always remember his behaviour on a 'Celebrity Apprentice'!

Someone with a big ego and a small will... will, I mean a large car?

Kartush Mon 28-Jun-21 12:54:39

My husband. For me an alpha male is strong mentaly, willing to take charge, decisive, takes the lead, protective.

Surprised that anyone is still talking of alpha males. As has been mentioned they're usually pains in the neck. Arrogant, brash, chauvinistic and downright awful. My brother in law would proudly claim to be one. I would agree with him. But it's nothing to be proud of.

MissAdventure Mon 28-Jun-21 13:03:44

I think that's an arsehole, not an alpha. grin

The personality profile of “alphas” of both sexes appears extremely unattractive to me. Depends whether people like to feel dominated, in a work situation or in personal life. I personally prefer a more collaborative relationship in both.

That's exactly what we call the 'alpha male' who lives next door.
I mentioned him on the 'neighbour's nicknames' thread

Sean Connery must be the ultimate alpha male!
And what about Tom Jones?

RosieJ18 Mon 28-Jun-21 14:30:28

We are all biologically drawn to a so called alpha male it’s in our DNA as in nature to ensure survival of the fittest.. However thank goodness we have developed enough to see good merit in everyone and each of us will value different individual traits.
Each to his own as they say !

DerbyshireLass Mon 28-Jun-21 14:40:58

Reading this thread with great amusement.

I do think that some people might be confusing alpha males with arseholes.......

I have known many Alphas, my husband and most of my uncles for a start as well as many close friends. Not one of them has demonstrated Silver Backed Gorilla tendencies. ?

They were all just intelligent, strong, capable, caring men, quietly confident and happy in their own skins. All kind, loving and generous and protective to those weaker than themselves.

I think by definition Alphas will rise to the top in any chosen career or profession - just like cream always rises to the top so too will Alphas because ability, courage, and determination will prevail.

So most of the people you see in the public eye will be Alphas, whether it be sports, business, academia, or the entertainment industries. They will all have that grit and determination to succeed.

Of course, some of them will indeed be complete and utter arseholes but I think it's a mistake to jump to the conclusion that all Alphas are nasty pieces of work.

I have known plenty of vile bullying Betas who desperately wanted to be Alphas.. They felt inadequate compared with their Alpha peers so took out their rage and frustration on those who couldn't fight back, usually their victims were women and children.

Not all Alphas are gorillas, and not all Betas are gentle lambs.

Talullah Mon 28-Jun-21 14:50:42

I think it must be a generational thing. I'd not be thinking anyone I know is an alpha male. was this not term adopted about the behaviours of monkeys and gorillas?

Quite an interesting article

I’m not even sure what an alpha make is. Surely only their wives would know.

This will do for me.

Skydancer Mon 28-Jun-21 15:20:26

I guess it's the opposite of a wimp. I want someone who will stand up for what's right and who is strong and capable. In other words, a proper bloke. As someone upthread said, I don't want my man to have a feminine side. I do agree about Putin. Also like Dion Dublin and Sean Bean. But, as somebody said, maybe when we think of alpha males it's really the ones we fancy.

Whether you fancy Tom Jones or not is irrelevant. He is an alpha male. You will not fancy all of them.

Lucca Mon 28-Jun-21 15:24:16

You know what… I don’t think we should even apply the alpha male epithet to humans,

Dinahmo Mon 28-Jun-21 15:24:47

Peasblossom You've hit the nail on the head. They could be someone fanciable but definitely not a pleasant person.

I hope I wouldn’t ! That would be rather promiscuous of me !

I can’t say that I’ve ever given that much thought to alpha maledom (have I invented a new term?) so I had a quick Google and found this, about the myth of the alpha male, which I thought very interesting. greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/the_myth_of_the_alpha_male

I thought of a few people that might fit that profile but I’ve forgotten them now. grin If I remember, I’ll come back.
