Someone recently described Boris Johnson on here as an Alpha Male, many others disagreed

Who is your idea of an Alpha Male? To me it's someone who is: Strong, Successful, Good Looking, Confident but not afraid to show a softer, caring side.

My list so far:

Rafa Nada
Keanu Reeves
Prof Brian Cox
Marcus Rashford
Steve Backshall
Will Kirk (The Repair Shop)

“To me it means a male I wouldn’t like”.

Exactly that.

I've only partially RTT.
But to me, it's a euphemism for bit of a git.
My neighbour describes her adult son as an alpha male, and I think she expects you to understand 'the code'.

Some of the men mooted here as Alpha Males, Gordon Ramsey, John Wayne would be my worst nightmare, personally having had quite a dominant father growing up, I wouldn't want someone who comes across as a subjugator. Ideally, as partners we should be equal and have different strengths and weaknesses, ultimately A Yin to each others Yang.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Bear Grylls, all that pushing the boundaries physically, I imagine feeds into that image. No that I ever feel inclined to watch him either.

I think Henry VIII fits the description. One who took charge. Or Henry V - the Shakespeare version.

The antithesis is

Trump/Biden

In the animal world the Alpha Male is very dominant and only associates with females for mating, at others times he is often solitary. If he does stay with the herd he will drive off any competing males.

Sean Connery
Harrison Ford

Load of rubbish. Man is a man with all his faults too.

Bazza Mon 28-Jun-21 11:02:54

I’d much rather have a man who’s not afraid to show his feminine side once in a while. An alpha male would be my worse nightmare.

Me too!
Not interested.

MissAdventure Mon 28-Jun-21 11:05:43

No feminine side to the men I like.
I like a man's man (whatever that is)
Vinnie Jones, I suppose, I'd consider an alpha male.

Even the term 'Alpha Male' makes me feel queasy. It would be someone I'd want to avoid, that's for sure.

NotSpaghetti Mon 28-Jun-21 11:12:55

And I think Trump would like to be an Alpha male and has been trying to be one, and likes to feel as though he is one, but actually I'm not really sure that he really IS one.

AmberSpyglass Mon 28-Jun-21 11:13:49

Ugh, I can’t think of anything worse.

nanna8 Mon 28-Jun-21 11:14:46

Well I wouldn’t want a beta. There’s something very attractive about those powerful males. Donald Trump is not one of them, he’s a joke.

Janiepops Mon 28-Jun-21 11:16:42

Tom Hardy, so alpha!

Thomas Shelby as acted by Killian Murphy, Thomas is a proper badass, but Killian is a softy, kind and quiet,so obviously,a great actor!

WeeMadArthur Mon 28-Jun-21 11:17:05

I thought this was quite a good definition of a modern alpha male, and they are so much more likeable than the old version.

modern alpha male

My vote goes to Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as he seems to be a loving husband and father, good to his fans, motivational and handsome!

dorcas1950 Mon 28-Jun-21 11:35:54

Idris Elba

Alioop Mon 28-Jun-21 11:37:25

My ex husband, that's one of the reasons I left

Rosethorn Mon 28-Jun-21 11:38:32

Brian Cox??
Camp as a row of tents at a holiday park!

Juicylucy Mon 28-Jun-21 11:38:50

I think it means something different to different generations. To me it’s a real man, a strong man, one that can lift/ move heavy objects, not scared to get his hands dirty, do all the DIY basically put his hand to most things. As opposed to a man sat at a desk all day paying an alpha male to do the heavy work.

MissAdventure Mon 28-Jun-21 11:46:20

Alan Sugar is an alpha male, I'd say.

homefarm Mon 28-Jun-21 11:56:15

I don't "do" alpha males at all. Most men who think they are , are just selfish nasty people with no respect for anyone other than themselves.

Theoddbird Mon 28-Jun-21 12:00:43

Alpha Male....silly title for anyone....
