All major television companies think we all want to watch and hear about sport all summer.
It does not matter as much now, where we can watch practically anything we want over the computer, but it used to be quite dreadful.
You would think it would pay television to find out exactly what percentage of their viewers would prefer some alternative form of entertainment, and to provide it.
They are still apparently living in the world of the 1950s as far as sport goes.
Historically speaking, countries all over Europe started encouraging sports as healthy outdoor excercise for the masses somewhere around 1900.
I suspect the aim was also to leave less time for workers to organize themselves in trade unions!
Quite a lot of public money was expended on sports facilities at that time and sports and gymnastics were included in school syllabuses. This was done with the laudable aim of improving the general popuation's health. TB was still rife at the time, so encouraging people to do some sort of outdoor activity in their very limited free time, after a 60 hour working week, and with maximum one week's summr holiday a year (many had less), was necessary,
Now it strikes me we hardly need to encourage sports any more. I personally would like to see some of the money used on sports diverted to theatres and orchestras, but that isn't likely to happen.
