Following on from a few comments on the Royal thread, who would you class as an ‘icon’?

I’ll start off with Marilyn Monroe.

Why can’t Rosa Parks be an icon
I would think she completely fits this explanation
a person or thing widely admired especially for having great influence or significance in a particular sphere a civil rights icon an actor and fashion icon

Could an icon be classed as someone recognisable by using only one of their names?
E.g. Monroe, Mandella, Diana, Pele.
I am just chatting by the way, before the thread police jump in to say that is not what I should be talking about on this thread.

ninathenana Sun 04-Jul-21 14:42:07

I agree with a lot of these

I'd add Freddie Mercury

NotSpaghetti Sun 04-Jul-21 14:53:17

I do think an icon has to be something significant in a particular area, maybe Mother Theresa? Yes, ilovecheese Maradona is maybe a footballing icon.

sodapop Sun 04-Jul-21 14:59:17

Sorry FannyCornforth didn't realise you were the only one allowed to be critical.

NotSpaghetti Sun 04-Jul-21 15:04:00

Callistemon on the other thread said Icon meaning someone who is idolised
I don’t think many of these would be idolised - but maybe I think too literally….
Icons are generally symbols of something I think.

You've really got it in for me haven't you.

trisher Sun 04-Jul-21 16:26:04

I'm just wondering if you have be dead to be an Icon?
For example I thought of John Lennon, then I wondered about Paul McCartney (although JL was always my favourite) or should it just be The Beatles?
Michael Cane
Margaret Atwood
