Following on from a few comments on the Royal thread, who would you class as an ‘icon’?

I’ll start off with Marilyn Monroe.

Why have a go at Fanny? It’s a chat. Bit pointless if everyone just lists icons with no reactions allowed

Mary Portas

A lot of people I would have named - such as Elvis, Mandela, Marilyn, Che, Mohammed Ali, etc - have been already been mentioned but I would add Charlie Chaplin to the list. I'm not a big fan of slapstick but I think that he was culturally significant and instantly recognisable.

It depends on your defintion of an icon.. I don't know any.

Bluedaisy Mon 05-Jul-21 12:31:43

Princess Diana
Elvis
David Bowie

I don't really know what an icon is.
I think Lady Di was rated as one by many but it seems that ( most of? )those mentioned have feet of clay.
When Diana died, my husband suggested I ground myself for a couple of weeks in case I came across someone who did not share my views..... and might do me harm. I then discovered I had a friend in the same position and we drove around the countryside unmolested for a couple of weeks

If people see others as icons, please can you say what you feel they are icons of - what they symbolically represent?

Some are more likely than others.
Presumably the Queen is an icon of royalty - maybe Leonardo da Vinci would be an icon of a polymath... I can think of a couple of potential Icons of the fashion world but some offerings above I can't quite see what they are icons of exactly.

Gabrielle56 Mon 05-Jul-21 13:52:32

I suppose Elvis! Others that are globally recognisable (or almost)
Martin Monroe
Cliff

Nelson Mandela
Barack Obama
Bob Dylan
Joan Baez
David Attenborough
Greta Thunberg
