Following on from a few comments on the Royal thread, who would you class as an ‘icon’?
I’ll start off with Marilyn Monroe.

It will come as no surprise that I've been thinking about it too Calendargirl 
I've just seen a little clip on another thread of Monroe dancing and I immediately thought of the 'icon' thing. She was just so luminous.
The term 'lighting up the screen' is oft used, but only really applies to her.
I don't think that Rosa Parks is an icon. A hero yes.
I think that an icon needs to be instantly recognisable.
These are just my musings - I'm not after an argument, honest
