When I saw pictures of Princess Alexandra with Sophie Wessex today, I thought that they epitomise all that is so good about our Royal Family. The Princess looked a stylish delight and Sophie her usual quiet but poised self. What a comfort they must be to Her Majesty.

Élégant, both of them.

Aveline Thu 08-Jul-21 21:36:10

Gosh I'd forgotten about Princess Alexandra and I always liked her too. She must keep a very low profile. I agree with the previous posters. Elegant and nice too.

PA has always been an elegant and discreet lady apparently the Queen is very fond of her.

I couldn’t remember what she looked like so googled her.
Doesn’t she look like Diana in this photo.

was she the one married to angus ogilvy ?

Beechnut Fri 09-Jul-21 06:20:23

I remember watching her wedding on tv and thinking it made her a queen. My mum told me not to be so daft.

Oh yes, Sophie Wessex and her multiple indiscreet conversations with the Fake Sheik, with tales of the govt not understanding countryside issues (hunting), what the Royal Family thought about the Opposition and certain politicians etc.

Yes, she was married to Angus Ogilvy.

She comes from good stock, her mother, Princess Marina, then Duchess of Kent, was considered a great beauty and very stylish.

BlueBelle Fri 09-Jul-21 07:14:46

Good stock is she a cow? Calendar girl ???

Calendargirl Fri 09-Jul-21 07:18:21

I thought that ‘good stock’was how the RF might refer to such matters BlueBelle. ?

Perhaps I should have described it as ‘good genes’.

M0nica Fri 09-Jul-21 07:52:11

Chardy How long ago was that? Have you never made a mistake in your life? Would you enjoy having it constantly referred to decades later?

She was young and testing new areas with royal wives having jobs. she learned her lesson and and hasn't repeated it, and is clearly now a trusted friend to the Queen.

sodapop Fri 09-Jul-21 07:56:34

Agree MOnica glass houses etc.
I think both ladies are elegant and a support to the Queen. Not heard much of Princess Alexandra over the last few years though.

M0nica Fri 09-Jul-21 08:11:17

She is well over 80. I think she was born in the mid 1930s. Given that the number of 'active' royals is being slimmed down, I would imagine she is enjoying a quiet retirement.

BlueSky Fri 09-Jul-21 08:27:29

Must be such a comfort to the Queen having such a large extended family now that she lost her husband. I know it’s not the same but it’s bound to help.

timetogo2016 Fri 09-Jul-21 10:02:50

I agree Bluesky.

I've made dozens of mistakes, but she was 36 with years of experience in PR, and should have known better than to say things to a complete stranger.

Anniebach Fri 09-Jul-21 10:18:16

She had 36 years experience in PR ? she is 56 now !

M0nica Fri 09-Jul-21 10:28:33

It was still decades ago and not repeated, nor done before.

annodomini Fri 09-Jul-21 11:45:28

The other royal bride I remember is Alexandra's sister-in-law, Katharine, Duchess of Kent. She was a lovely bride and proved to be a very gracious and graceful member of the royal family. She always used to be seen in the royal box at Wimbledon, and for many years, presented the trophies - remember her comforting a tearful Jana Novotna when she was upset at losing in the final.

Princess Alexandra’s birthday is on Christmas Day.

As a trivial fact, I seem to recall when she had her first baby, her husband was present at the birth. This was quite groundbreaking, as back then it wasn’t a commonplace happening, especially with the Royals.

Aveline Fri 09-Jul-21 14:11:14

Princess Alexandra always seems to have such a pleasant expression on her face. I do remember the Duchess of Kent. Another apparently very nice woman. Didn't have her troubles to seek but settled down to a quiet life teaching music as I remember but I might have got that wrong. Was there not a sadness? A miscarriage?

sodapop Fri 09-Jul-21 16:33:59

Yes I believe Princess Alexandra suffered badly with depression. I think as you say Aveline she retired from public life quite some time ago.

Aveline Fri 09-Jul-21 17:04:59

I thought that was the Duchess of Kent not Princess Alexandra?
