Welcome to Thread II!

We companionably mused, gossiped and waffled about Royalty, and vaguely related things for 1000 posts!

Starting with names; and ending on them them…
and in between covered everything from Adam Faith to Scottish Country Dancing!

So, as before, God Bless this Ship and All who Sail in her! ??

FannyCornforth Mon 26-Jul-21 15:26:48

Ellianne
Henry is a superb name for a dog.
I find names ending in ‘ee’ the best for pets.

Calendargirl I didn’t know that. That is special.
Although you’re treading on very thin ice bringing tiaras into the conversation!

Blossoming Mon 26-Jul-21 15:53:27

More tiaras! There can never be enough.

Callistemon Mon 26-Jul-21 15:55:06

I'm wearing mine.
I always wear one of them when I read a Royal thread.

Calendargirl Mon 26-Jul-21 18:02:06

Princess Anne also wore it on her wedding day Fanny.

It’s Charles and Diana’s 40th Wedding Anniversary today

Lets put to bed the absolute hypocrisy that the royal family - mascots of the Private Jet class - give a toss about the Environment.

Landrover driving, helicopter flying, grouse moor burning hypocrites.

A draft law in the Scottish Parliament was amended to exempt the Queen's land from measures to encourage green energy after her lawyers raised "concerns".

FannyCornforth Thu 29-Jul-21 09:34:01

Grany what’s the latest with the billboards?

maddyone Thu 29-Jul-21 09:38:32

I think you could be right Grany and I don’t usually agree with you grin

Elegran Thu 29-Jul-21 09:43:48

A clause in that law (which encouraged the use of underground pipes to heat homes and buildings rather than boilers powered by fossil fuels.) allowed for compulsory purchase of land if that was "in the greater public interest". Compulsory purchase is a subject which raises instant and heartfelt opposition in all owners, from royalty to the owners of modest semis threatened by a new bypass planned to go through their living-room.

"Setting out the need for the exemption in the Scottish Parliament, . . . her lawyer said that licence holders for heat networks were likely to be private enterprises, as opposed to public authorities which are more typically involved with compulsory purchase."

I imagine his thinking was that compulsory purchase could be initiated more by anti-monarchy motives than by pure consideration of "the greater public good" or that the private property of royalty could be a bigger "prize" to a commmercial organisation than the compulsory purchase of a field belonging to a mere minor landowner. Or that it was the "thin end of the wedge" driven in to separate the monarchy from its position.

Alegrias1 Thu 29-Jul-21 09:48:17

Really Elegran? So anyone wanting to buy land which is owned by Her Maj must be doing it to bring down the monarchy? Pushing it a bit far.

In any case it doesn't matter. Whoever owns the land, if its needed for the good of society, there are rules. Unless you live in a palace, clearly. I think the use of the term "a mere minor landowner" is very telling.

Where are they exactly?

Yes, you are right there.
I think it shows their greed.
But I felt much the same when Judi Fench jetted off to do that orangutan programme or when celebrities jet off to Africa to do their videos about life there.

maddyone Thu 29-Jul-21 10:06:26

Ellianne and Grany are both correct. It is annoying to us mere mortals to regularly read or watch news reports of the royals or celebrities using private jets, gas guzzling cars and helicopters whenever the mood takes them. I accept that sometimes it’s necessary for royals to use helicopters in order to fulfill their engagements.

It’s Charles and Diana’s 40th Wedding Anniversary today

Oh, yes it is Fanny

It was a bank holiday, remember taking the dog for an early walk and thinking what a nice day they had got.

We went round to watch the wedding at my mum’s. DH wasn’t really interested, only watched snippets in between gardening, but commented on how creased her dress was when she stepped out of the car.

Such hope, such promise, all to naught.

Wonder what Charles is thinking on his ‘ex’ Ruby Wedding anniversary?

maddyone Thu 29-Jul-21 10:29:43

If Charles is thinking about it at all, I would imagine he’s thinking how sad it is with the way it all turned out. I think he went into the marriage hoping for the best, and I think he had feelings for Diana. But perhaps he thought she would quietly accept him having a mistress like kings of years ago. My opinions only, I haven’t had the chance to have a chat with him about it.
At least he’s happy now with Camilla. That shows through clearly.

Mollygo Thu 29-Jul-21 10:31:04

Calendargirl I wonder what anyone thinks on the anniversary if a previous marriage.

What do Grannetters who have posted about their ex husbands, wives or partners when they didn’t part of the best of terms think about on the ex-wedding anniversary?

Elegran Thu 29-Jul-21 10:37:15

the term "a mere minor landowner" was tongue in cheek, Alegrias. Perhaps I should have put it into inverted commas before you did?

I didn't say that "anyone wanting to buy land which is owned by Her Maj must be doing it to bring down the monarchy"

I said that the Queen's lawyer may have considered that this legislation gave anyone wanting to score a point against the monarchy a loophole through which to insert the wedge. There are people who would be happy to use that loophole, directly or indirectly, or to approve of its use. some of them post on here.

It makes me wonder if Charles (and indeed Camilla) think about those events in a complex way; that is, mixing the private and the public. In fact, I would apply it to all the RF.

That they understand and respond to the events and personalities in their lives in the same straight forward way that we do; but they are also forced to see them through the lens of historical and cultural importance.

I think that HM’s ability to navigate this has been her strength; and perhaps Harry’s inability to do the same is what has done his poor head in.

Please excuse the waffle - I’m typing aloud as I think!

trisher Thu 29-Jul-21 11:14:02

Historical and cultural importance? I can think of a lot of things that were of much more importance than any Royal getting hitched (or divorced for that matter). Like a march against a war in Iraq, or a war for that matter, or the London bombings. I suppose what they provide is a nice bit of pageantry and show that keeps the peasants happy. I suppose it's them or Disney!
They have tiaras too, but I don't think they are the real thing.

FannyCornforth Thu 29-Jul-21 11:25:32

trisher I don’t disagree with you, and I’m certainly not going to argue with you.
I’m actually a far more Republican than Royalist.
I think that when HM goes it’s days are numbered.
But I am really, really interested from a historical and cultural pov.
I also like talking about dresses and jewellery and gossiping.

Ellianne Thu 29-Jul-21 11:27:30

historical and cultural importance.

I wonder whether, when George studies the Victorians at school, he has a little chuckle?
Or when they do a school trip to the Tower of London!

Ellianne Thu 29-Jul-21 11:28:23

Does Charlotte get to dress up in the Crown jewellery?

Alegrias1 Thu 29-Jul-21 11:28:49

Sorry Elegran you can't always get tone online wink.

But your explanation still means they get excused from some of the laws that the rest of us have to abide by and they think that's absolutely fine.

FannyCornforth Thu 29-Jul-21 11:29:36

…I also enjoy messing up syntax and misusing apostrophes smile
