Welcome to Thread II!

We companionably mused, gossiped and waffled about Royalty, and vaguely related things for 1000 posts!

Starting with names; and ending on them them…
and in between covered everything from Adam Faith to Scottish Country Dancing!

So, as before, God Bless this Ship and All who Sail in her! ??

Fanny I did not say she hasn’t cashed in on her connection to
the royal family, I said she has not given interviews slagging them off.

*trisher*, you couldn’t run up a league table could you, or perhaps we could do some sort of vote?

I think we all know who would be at the top and the bottom of this league. Maybe we should have a points system for the rest. They could move up and down acording to actions and perception.

Anniebach Tue 03-Aug-21 17:35:45

Really trisher if you are going run up a league table only you
know who will be at the top and bottom, you are a republican so we can expect anyone who slags off the family will be top of your list.

Yes, sorry, I acknowledge that. I didn’t say that you did say that, but I can understand why you thought that you were implicated

Is it time to send a message to GN HQ with a word of praise for one of these posts.

Casdon Tue 03-Aug-21 18:21:48

A league table can’t have people in fixed positions at the top and the bottom can it, or it wouldn’t be a league table, smacks of the Superleague. All votes would need to be equal, and it would no doubt end up with very surprising results for those who set it up. Prince Edward for example could be Leicester City one year, and trounce the rest in popularity - but it would be the people’s vote that got him there.

trisher Tue 03-Aug-21 19:01:17

Casdon you may be right, the problem is I can't see anyway the individual at the top could slip down ( well there is one but we don't mention it on GN). Maybe we do need a Superleague--but then who? Oh my brain hurts I give up!

Casdon Tue 03-Aug-21 19:31:16

Perhaps a Gransnet voters section on YouGov is the way forward. I just looked it up, and you can look up popularity by generation for each Royal, it’s interesting to see the differences in the perceptions of different age groups - Prince William is the favourite for Generation X for example.
yougov.co.uk/ratings/politics/popularity/royalty/all
Not sure how representative of the UK public YouGov is though.

Thank you Casdon, that’s very interesting to have it in black and white like that.
It’s a bit concerning to see just how relatively unpopular poor Charles is.
He’s only just above Sophie, and there must be quite a few members of public who dot even know who she is.
The men in grey suits may have something up their suit sleeves.
It seems to me increasingly likely that William will take over when HM pops her Allendro and Davide’s of Kensington
(yes, I looked that up, and yes, I am that sad!)

If William takes over from HM in place of Charles, they've lost any shred of credibility they are clinging on to. The whole point of a hereditary monarchy is that it is hereditary. If they change who comes next because they think the next guy in line is a liability, then what on earth is the point of any of this duty and tradition that they keep throwing in our faces?

Anniebach Wed 04-Aug-21 09:31:03

And what would Charles do, how can the king be the son of
The Prince of Wales ?

FannyCornforth Wed 04-Aug-21 10:07:22

I hadn’t really thought about it that way Al. Nah, I don’t suppose that it will happen like that.

And Charles really wants the gig too. Things might have been different though if he didn’t want to be monarch.
He will have to do a lot of heavy lifting to get the Great British Public to accept the seismic change of HM not being at the helm.

What with Covid and B*****, we really don’t want any more psychological upheaval.
That why I don’t want to be a Republic, I can’t be doing with change. I need stability. That, and I don’t trust us to pick a decent President, or whatever.

Charles is going to be King George, isn’t he?

Alegrias1 Wed 04-Aug-21 10:20:54

Don't get me started on whether we, unlike any other modern democracy, should be incapable of choosing our own "Head of State" and can't really be trusted with making decisions at a ballot box.

Benevolent despotism, that's what we should have smile (sarcasm!)

Anniebach Wed 04-Aug-21 10:26:30

I don’t think it’s Charles wants to be king, he became heir age 3
and only 9 when made Prince of Wales , so no choice .

Alegrias1 Wed 04-Aug-21 10:30:23

What a great way to run a country.

Tell a 3 year old boy that his destiny is decided for him but he'll have to wait 75 years for it to happen.

Its not nice is it?

Calendargirl Wed 04-Aug-21 10:33:38

Charles is going to be King George, isn’t he?

Is he?

Why?

trisher Wed 04-Aug-21 10:35:00

Another George! They are worried about the Charles legacy aren't they?

trisher Wed 04-Aug-21 10:36:04

Calendargirl

^Charles is going to be King George, isn’t he?^

Is he?

Why?

Maybe because one lost his head and the other just hung on then his brother lost the crown?

FannyCornforth Wed 04-Aug-21 10:40:41

It’s not unusual for ‘them’ to have different names.
Think Edward, the Duke of Windsor, his real name was David.
And Charles is a big fan of George III, aka ‘Farmer George’. He was very popular with the public too

Blossoming Wed 04-Aug-21 10:44:26

FannyC It seems to me increasingly likely that William will take over

I thought that, but I think that Charles will still be king, with William taking on more duties on his behalf, as it were. Charles is in his 70s. The Queen was much younger when she took the throne.

But how can you reconcile that with Brexit, and the current Government?
And whenever you ask folk who they would like, they come out with flipping Branson
Or we’d end up with Simon Cowell or even Johnson (shudder).
I actually quite like the idea of a benevolent despot (not sarcasm!)

Blossoming Wed 04-Aug-21 10:46:16

The Duke of Windsor’s full name was Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David.

FannyCornforth Wed 04-Aug-21 10:46:40

Ah Blossoming, yes, that sounds like a good idea

FannyCornforth Wed 04-Aug-21 10:47:33

Thanks Blossoming, I was wrong as usual!

Ellianne Wed 04-Aug-21 10:49:24

I think it is a bit sad there won't be a proper reigning Queen for a long long time, if ever. They tend to do a better job!

I agree Charles' patience must be running out. It's like sitting on a volcano, you never know when, if ever.
Or like Samuel Beckett's, "Waiting for Godot."
