Isn’t it time social media was brought under control - dreadful abuse after England football defeat.

Following England’s narrow defeat yesterday evening Rashford, Sancho and Saka were subjected to dreadful racist abuse on social media yesterday evening. This is happening in all walks of life where cowardly people go online to vent their spleen anonymously on others. Isn’t it time something was done to bring social media under control?

Definitely yes!

I just posted something similar on another thread, but here it is again.

Rashford tweeted his support for Raducanu and talked about how a similar thing happened to him. There's a lot of talk about how bad Twitter is but nobody talking about it when it used for good.

Totally agree, Twitter has found people lost with dementia, lost pets, publicised good causes. I have even seen people offered jobs after tweeting that they were unemployed.

Social Media is not the problem it’s the minority of idiots who would have behaved liked idiots in some form or another anyway.

I assume that they will come up with an algorithm to spot racist or bullying tweets and immediately delete them anytime soon.

Stop using Twitter.
Don't read it, don't post on it.
Simple.

Well said eazybee.

Maybe it's time for adults to grow up and show some maturity instead of acting like hormonal teenagers.

Ha, my three “hormonal” teenage DG have all been appalled by this racist behaviour, and denounced it as disgusting.

I suppose, in a way, it has highlighted to people that victims aren't all faceless entities.
They are real people, and it is utterly vile.

Racist abuse of these young men is unacceptable. But I hope the Media are not branding the people of this country as a whole as institutionally racist because I don't think we are at all. I accept that there is a certain fringe element who are, but in general I think most people are open and welcoming no matter what colour your skin. This England team have been uplifting, we have all got behind them and supported them and I really hope that they are bigger than this racist abuse and rise above it and realise that we all support and admire them.

Of course, I have to point out that he claims his account was hacked, but I think the police are investigating.
Hopefully they'll uncover the truth; whatever it is.

One has been suspended from his job with savills estate agents, so he is certainly not a bot.
More of an arse, I'd say.

Alegrias1 Tue 13-Jul-21 16:17:25

If as Paperbackwriter says there are only a few followers of these Twitter accounts, they are very likely to be bots. i.e. not real people at all shock

Callistemon Tue 13-Jul-21 16:15:32

Naming, shaming, a ban on any social media accounts plus a life ban on attending any more football matches is the least they deserve.
It is a criminal offence so, if found, a custodial sentence could be appropriate in some cases

Witzend Tue 13-Jul-21 16:14:07

Yes, and the sooner the better.

Paperbackwriter Tue 13-Jul-21 15:41:26

It's a difficult one, isn't it? I'm not defending any racism but just because people get banned from social media, it doesn't mean those vile sorts aren't still out there. In a way I prefer that they are free to post, just so we can all call them out on it and they get to know they are disgusting everyone else. I have noticed that on Twitter they tend to be those with very few followers - probably because nobody in their right mind wants to follow racists etc. On the whole, I am not keen on banishing anyone, not even the worst. And yet..

Callistemon Tue 13-Jul-21 15:35:47

I've only seen very positive and supportive posts on FB today, along with petitions asking for signatures requesting the government, tech companies etc to do something about this vile racism.

Vange1 Tue 13-Jul-21 15:26:15

I use only this site - no others. I was on FB once, got trolled, came off, & found I could have a perfectly happy life without it.

Knopflerfan Tue 13-Jul-21 14:59:48

And I agree wholeheartedly with the post from Kamiso -- that is very thought-provoking. If AirB&B (and many others) can insist on proof of identity, can't Facebook and Twitter do the same? It wouldn't stop the racism, sexism, etc etc but it would do a lot to put these morons off.

Knopflerfan Tue 13-Jul-21 14:57:48

Yes.

Clevedon Tue 13-Jul-21 14:43:38

Yes

blondenana Tue 13-Jul-21 14:33:20

Yes definitely, the abuse is terrible, people need to be traced and banned, and prosecuted

Coco51 Tue 13-Jul-21 14:29:43

The answer is not to react - it is what the bullies want. The less media coverage they are given the less will be the incentive to carry on. If everyone coming across such posts deleted them and blocked the perpertrators they would become pointless.
Talking about racism brings it to the fore. Far better to treat people as people, with no reference to race, religion, culture or skin colour.

Kamiso Tue 13-Jul-21 13:56:25

On reflection Re-joining Airbnb recently involved showing proof of identity and took longer than it previously did, but this is an international organisation so presumably it can be done if the organisation is willing but should it be an enforced legal requirement?

Widnesbabcia Tue 13-Jul-21 13:47:52

These people are nothing but cowards who hide behind their presumably fake social media accounts.. I am so proud of our young England team who played gave everything they had for us ???

chickkygran Tue 13-Jul-21 13:36:17

The online abuse these 3 young players have suffered is totally unacceptable and unforgivable. However it’s not the first time, David Beckham received death threats when he was given a red card. Gareth Southgate was also subjected to abuse when he missed the penalty. What is wrong with people? It is just a football match
