The motto I’ve found most helpful to me in my life has been this -
Waste Not Fresh Tears Over Old Griefs.
( Euripides)
When I’m feeling sorry for myself and find my past mistakes and personal sorrows overwhelming me, this is what I say to myself to drown them out.
What is your personal motto that’s helped you in the tougher times of your life ?

Live and let Live.

Be yourself. Everyone else is taken.

Never leave for tomorrow what you can do today
Or the lazy version
Never do today what you can leave for tomorrow

That reminded me of my late mum, she used to say 'tomorrow never comes'

"If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all"

Perfection is the enemy.

No... is a complete sentence.

I also find when dealing with difficult people the saying
What Goes Around Comes Around !
is helpful.
At some point in their lives karma will show up and they’ll slip on the thin ice they’ve been walking on.

This saying was on my Dorset cereal pack.. ‘Life’s a country path, winding this way and that. Take a deep breath, then take it all in’

Don’t count your chickens till they hatch

Lucca , ' This too shall pass' is always a good one for me.

Be kind, be kind, be kind

When God closes a door he also slams shut a window !!!

From quiet homes, and first beginning
Out to the undiscovered ends,
There's nothing worth the wear of winning
But laughter, and the love of friends.

My darling Dad quoted this often, lived by it, and it is important to me to remember.

Don't take life too seriously.... Nobody gets out alive anyway!

nipsmum Wed 14-Jul-21 11:29:40

Don't worry over something you can't change. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Heathcliff23 Wed 14-Jul-21 11:33:01

You can sit down and cry about it or get up and get on with it.

Amalegra Wed 14-Jul-21 11:36:56

My favourite for good advice is the Greek ‘ know thyself’.
My favourite to make me laugh is ‘when the going gets tough the tough go shopping’.
I try to practice both depending on the circumstances!

When one door closes another always opens
I'm an optimist

Sharman Wed 14-Jul-21 11:51:23

Neither a lender nor a borrower be. My mother always lived by this.

EEJit Wed 14-Jul-21 11:53:05

Sod 'em

Moggycuddler Wed 14-Jul-21 11:53:53

"You are a ghost, driving a meat covered skeleton made from stardust, riding a rock hurtling through space at 30 kilometers a second. Fear Nothing."
I found that, in a few variations, on the internet a while ago. I actually printed it out and stuck it on the bedroom wall. It reminds me that just existing in this incredible universe is an amazing thing and we are all awesome. We should try to be fearless.

I like your motto. Much needed just now too. Thank you smile

I would like to think it is "Be kind" and I truly try to do that. However if someone does something unkind to me theoretically 'I let it go'. I am not bitter, but a tiny part of my mind never quite trusts that person again. I can continue to be pleasant to them and I don't brood but the first time is a red flag and we build up pictures of characters by being aware of red flags.

Treat others as you yourself would expect to be treated.

LauraNorder Wed 14-Jul-21 12:12:17

Orlin’s motto
If at first you don’t succeed try doing it the way the wife suggested.

Kartush Wed 14-Jul-21 12:22:47

To really see, look with your heart not with your eyes
