Cannabis smoking

My DD and SIL have neighbours who during the summer insist on smoking cannabis in their garden, but it is making its way up to my DGD bedroom as the windows are open.
I said they should call the police but they are unwilling to cause too much fuss as it may make things worse. I feel like knocking the door myself and telling them to stop but obviously it is not my place to do so. Have any of my GN friends any ideas on what to say to them to cause the least amount of animosity with their neighbours?

You can ask for them to move further down the garden. Hopefully they will.
I highly doubt the police will come out unless they're dealing drugs or have a grow going on.
I wonder whats going to happen when its legalised? There will be an awful lot of very unhappy people by the sounds of it

Lots of people are now using it, not just for leisure purposes, but also for medicinal reasons. I was a palliative care nurse before I retired, and many patients used it to help control their pain.

It doesn't have to be smoked though, you can take it in ways that doesn't impinge on other people.

Must have had a sheltered life, wouldn't know what it smells like. I would probably just close the window, it must be well diluted by the time it wafts up.

When I moved to this town in our block of flats, we used to hold our breath to get to our front door because of the strong smell of weed and skunk! My daughter is asthmatic and it affected her. They used to congregate at the corner behind the flats, and blow it into my lounge on purpose because I complained to the landlord! The lady next door kindly waits until we go out now, but I was very unpopular for a long time! I don't mind people choosing to smoke it but not if it is affecting your health, and it still worries me seeing the dealers giving the teenagers their drugs at the park!

I have never smelt weed in my life. Wouldn't know it if it were blown into my face.

It is an illegal substance and despite public perception it is a police issue albeit resulting sometimes in a caution. It also stays in your system for days so if they drive it could result in more serious consequences.

In a house i used to rent, the neighbours did smoke it and i could smell it in back yard, and more so in shared alley way (when we took the bins through) as there was a fan there- it was particularly strong sometimes, but he'd had mates go round so i naivély thought it must be as a few of them is in- when they moved out it turns out they had a cannabis 'grow' up in the attic! He had converted it and lined it and everything! (New landlord who had bought it told me)!

Obviously, if it bothers them they should say so to their neighbours.

I detest the smell of food grilling on a barbecue grill but have long since realised that it is something we just have to put up with.

Naturally you are concerned for your DGC but it's not really a police matter at this stage nor is it your place to make the initial approach to the neighbours, that puts your DD and SIL in a potentially difficult position.
Simply encourage DD and/or SIL to politely mention the problem regarding the GC bedroom window and their cannabis smoke and ask if they could possibly just move down the garden a few feet. It might be that the neighbours and completely unaware and are willing to oblige.

Yes we would be equally upset but I wasn’t worried if I was being unreasonable as I know we are not!!!

She went round this afternoon and asked them to give her a heads up if they are going to smoke it outside so she can move her DD or close the window, they said ok. DD is hoping they will be too embarrassed to tell her they are about to have a toke in their garden they will just go it inside!!
We will have to see how it plays out!

She has.
They will. ?

For those misinformed ?‍♀️

Police can issue a warning or an on-the-spot fine of £90 if you’re found with cannabis.
From .gov.uk website ?

It is a tricky situation especially if you don't want to sour the relationship with the neighbours.
If they are unwilling to move to the other end of the garden - I would suggest buying an airfilter for your GD room just to be on the safe side.
We can't change others behaviour, we can only try to lessen the impact it will have on our own lifes.

I always found the whiskey drinking thug of a neighbour much more of a problem. Your DD has spoken to them and I am sure they will just tell her in future.

Ah, another person who dislikes the smell of barbecue. Wonderful. I'm the same. Can't stand the stench. We have to go in if someone gets one going. But as you say, we have to put up with it.

If I had to choose I'd prefer some cannabis smoke wafting over.

MollyG Mon 26-Jul-21 11:57:49

Is it a rented house. Speak to landlord / agent

GardenofEngland Mon 26-Jul-21 12:01:52

I prefer the smell of cannabis to cigarettes, vapes and people burning garden waste with all that fithy smoke! I've never smoked any drug legal or illegal but did have an ex who did smoke cannabis and I do quite like the smell ?

Current Cannabis Law

Cannabis law in the UK hasn’t really changed much over the last couple of decades. The drug is still classified as a Class B substance, prohibiting recreational use entirely. Cannabis was approved for medical use in 2018, though there are strict regulations on the type of conditions and options people have with this.

My neighbours smoke it daily, it comes somehow from their house into our lounge even when the doors are shut. When they are all outside we have to close all the windows and doors. Whatever they smoke is so strong it lingers for ages. Not good when it's hot! Even worse when they have friends round, it can last from midday until late at night.

cornishpatsy Mon 26-Jul-21 12:13:26

I am another that cannot stand the smell of barbecues but would not ask people to stop or move their barbecue. I just close the windows.

4allweknow Mon 26-Jul-21 12:30:46

Just because a lot of people do something illegal doesn't make it right. Smoking cannabis is illegal, it's causing a nuisance. If the neighbours don't heed the hidden message from your chat, report them. We have all had enough to say about those breaking the Covid laws, what's the difference.

Would you be equally upset if they were just smoking ordinary tobacco OP? Because if it’s just the fact that it’s weed that you don’t like, then I think you’re being unreasonable.

Erm, it’s illegal and it stinks.

mumofmadboys Mon 26-Jul-21 12:46:18

Gillycats you say 'it is the primary reason for escalation of mental health problems'. Please quote your source of information.
Alcohol does so much more harm to individuals and communities than cannabis does.Alcohol is physically and psychologically addictive. Cannabis is not physically addictive

Granmarderby10 Mon 26-Jul-21 12:51:00

Is the smell alone detrimental to health in any way though?

SooozedaFlooze Mon 26-Jul-21 12:54:20

If theitr house is rented you can contact their landlord
