My DD and SIL have neighbours who during the summer insist on smoking cannabis in their garden, but it is making its way up to my DGD bedroom as the windows are open.
I said they should call the police but they are unwilling to cause too much fuss as it may make things worse. I feel like knocking the door myself and telling them to stop but obviously it is not my place to do so. Have any of my GN friends any ideas on what to say to them to cause the least amount of animosity with their neighbours?

There are a fair few reports of the effect that cannabis can have on the developing brain of adolescents and of psychosis with heavy use. This modern stuff is not always the hippy dippy harmless recreational drug it was once considered to be.
Well all I can say is good luck trying to get them to stop. I have a neighbour who smokes it. I didn’t know what it was when I first moved into my home. I kept getting the smell through my home. I reported it to the council thinking something wrong with pipes lol how stupid I felt when workmen told me what it was and would report it. Nothing was done. I was told to get a air conditioner. He’s a nice quiet neighbor and he suffers from depression but he keeps his windows shut But now I have a new neighbor on other side and guess what he also smokes it. But he leaves all his windows open. I burn a lot of smelly candles now. But you only have to walk to shops now and ppl walk past you smoking it. Once you know the smell you know what it is. No I definitely wouldn’t knock on the door and complain but you have to live next to these ppl.
If grandparents don’t object, what hope is there. It’s mind altering and hinders brain growth.
I don’t understand that it’s ok because lots do it.
Lots - steel cars, pickpocket, embezzle, cheat on spouses. Does this make it ok as lots do it?
You can bet if there cannabis smoking going on the much nastier stuff is not far away and the stuff of much human misery and destroyed families. I commend that to your conscience op and good luck!
There is no definitive proof that cannabis is a gateway drug.
Lots of smokers have no wish to progress onto harder stuff (such as alcohol, to name but one)
Police themselves smoke it, how often do your neighbours smoke it, I would just keep the window closed if the wind is blowing in your direction. I’m surprised it’s not been made fully illegal by the amount of people who smoke it. I would not tell the police unless they were acting like idiots and dealing drugs from their abode.
I don’t know HOW people smoke it ! I have severe arthritis and , during one particularly severe episode, my OH procured for me a cannabis joint. Three inhalations later , I was incapable of speaking coherently, walking or even opening my eyes.Just THREE puffs ! What sort of ‘child of the 60s,’hippy student flower power excuse for a baby boomer was I ? But anyway, not much you can do about it. For personal use, it’s not against the law and I’d close the window anyway.
I’m sure you can get passively stoned because I remember feeing quite weird travelling back from some concerts back in the day. Also you can lose your job if cannabis is picked up in your system. Just goes to show how far the air that we breathe travels though.

I would not know it if I smelled it!
I must be in the minority i like the smell and you know when anyone is smoking they are chilling not like alcohol which invariably leads to aggression
Many many years ago I gave a lift to an elderly (well, she seemed elderly to me at the time). I think I was in some sort of volunteer group. Anyway, she had MS and I casually asked her if she’d tried cannabis (I wasn’t dealing but the way: I’d just read about it!) and she said, of course and it really helps.
Cannabis is illegal for recreational use in the U.K. and is a class B drug.
It is illegal to possess, grow, distribute or sell cannabis in the U.K..
Is that clear enough for those of you who apparently think the OP is making a fuss about nothing.
It smells disgusting, is toxic and just like tobacco it is antisocial to subject others to the smoke.
That's why the neighbours will almost certainly be cooperative in making sure the pong doesn't affect others.

Possession is illegal no matter how small the quantity, growing it is illegal, selling it is illegal.
For personal use IT IS ILLEGAL tictacnana. please don’t minimise it.
I hate the smell of it and my neighbours teenage daughter was smoking it all last summer whilst her parents were working and has been smoking it in her bedroom with her window wide open this year too. It drifts into my house even though my patio door and windows are shut. What did Infuriate me though was that for the past month she’s been smoking it every morning then getting into her car/school of motoring car afterwards( stinking of expensive perfume) for driving lessons. In my eyes that is just as bad as drinking a few shots of vodka. She passed her test but still continued to smoke it. I wanted to call the police and shop her because a) it’s an illegal substance b) she’s breaking the law by drug driving c) it’s anti social. My husband advised me not to get involved. She fortunately packed up her small car and moved out last night but I highly doubt the weed habit has stopped. She is a very selfish spoiled madam who cares not a jot about anyone but herself. Crime stoppers is the line to call because I asked my elderly ex policeman uncle.

Bigirl57. It is fully illegal in the United Kingdom. Please stop making statements which are untrue.
If medically prescribed which refers to a tiny number of very ill people an exception is made but recreational use is totally against the law.
Despite it being illegal the police generally ignore it if 'for personal use'. I occasionally dabbled as a student and find the smell quite pleasant, though only in very small doses. I have some hand cream that smalls of weed which I rather like. As an ex smoker I find the smell of tobacco smoke much more unpleasant. I have a neighbour who goes outside by the road to smoke tobacco. I'm guessing his wife doesn't allow it in the house. Fortunately our houses are detached and I don't smell it unless I walk past him while he's out there. I wouldn't be happy if it came inside my house.
I worked on the census earlier this year and there were places I went where I smelled both types of smoke. I felt sorry for the people living in those conditions. It made me realise how priviledged I am to have a house with a garden and considerate neighbours!
I know both police and social workers who smoke it.
I also know someone who works in rehab who does.
It is illegal, but the likely outcome of being found in posession is a fine or warning, if it's a small amount.

Is the smell alone detrimental to health in any way though?
Granmarderby10 If you can smell it you are inhaling it which is, of course detrimental to health.
I had neighbours who were smoking cannabis indoors during lockdown, both day and night. The smell permeated through the walls and into my home. They were tenants in an apartment where smoking of any description was not allowed. It took several letters from the managing agent to get them to stop. It was awful, and just as annoying and disturbing as loud noise. You have my sympathy.
According to the government website
www.gov.uk/penalties-drug-possession-dealing
Cannabis
Police can issue a warning or an on-the-spot fine of £90 if you’re found with cannabis.
A lady in our village was selling pots on the local face book page after her flat that she lets was raided by police and the cannabis plants were taken away. She didn't mention what happened to her tenants. I notice you said that your relatives don't want to make things "worse" so I take it that there have been other problems in the past. By the time the vapour is released into the atmosphere and travels up it is unlikely that it will affect your GD unless they have a lot of people smoking it in their garden.
BlueBelle
I don’t think it’s illegal for home use espee it is for growing or selling or large amounts but I don’t think it is for small amounts in your own home
I get it from both sides of my house ?
I don’t think police would do anything for home use and to be honest they d never stop knocking on doors if they did it’s extremely common usage
The best one was last year my daughter and I were in the sea and I said to her ‘can you smell weed’ she said ‘yes it’s very strong’ we were both puzzled being in the sea then a lilo floated past with a middle aged to older man lying on his back puffing away we couldn’t help laughing it was such a strange thing to see
In answer to your original question I don’t think that’s there’s much you can do
Oh yes BlueBelle it most certainly is illegal even in tiny amounts. It is a class B drug.
I have to say that I am amazed that so many people believe it isn’t harmful and even think it is legal.
