Tesco six-packs of bottled water - shortage?

(214 Posts)

I buy a six-pack of bottled water each week from Tesco, delivered as part of my grocery delivery.

There are several brands, I usually order a particular one of them, but sometimes it is not available and then I order a different one. I allow a substitution and so various brands arrive in practice.

This week, none of them is available at the store from where my deliveries arrive.

I know there is hot weather. I know there is the pingdemic.

I am just wondering if this is just a temporary glitch locally or something more permanent and widespread going on.

As I do not go to the shops, I am wondering, are the shelves generally bare at present?

I see photos of empty shelves, but it is easy for someone with an agenda to go to the fresh bread aisle at the end of the day and make something of a typical situation for one fresh product that has happened for many years.

I too was terrified in March 2020 for the entirety of 2 weeks. I then came to the conclusion that the fear and anxiety was more harmful and worse than the virus. I made the decision to carry on my life as normal as possible. I went out walking twice a day, went to the local coop at least once a day for fresh supplies. I visited my children, hugged my family and friends and went to Spain last august.
I decided to renovate my house, had a project manager and worked alongside at least 30 tradesmen. No masks no distancing…. I’ve not sneezed for 2 years……..but I made sure I looked after myself nutritionaly and through exercise.
I’m not objecting to anything you are doing……but it doesn’t seem much like a life. If you want to permanently isolate yourself then that’s fine…….but it’s not for me.

It really isn't your business how anybody else chooses to live his/her life. It doesn't have anything to do with shortages in supermarkets, which are very real, either.

^I’m flexible about what I eat, but the cats aren’t^

I know you can’t explain the shortages to the cats, but surely they will eat something else or go hungry.

?

They certainly do ... fresh chicken, tuna, salmon, sardines ... They just turn their noses up at other brands of cat food.

We are not exactly talking food shortages though are we?
I think you need to keep a sense of proportion and drink tap water!

This is what came out of my tap yesterday. No, thank you!

Try Chablis or Pinot Gris Growstuff
(And complain to your water company- unless of course that was a bathroom tap and not the rising main)

I haven't drunk alcohol for years. In any case, I don't think it makes very good tea.

growstuff Mon 26-Jul-21 21:36:33

People in this town have been complaining to the water company for months, but nothing has been done. It's been identified as sand. It's always chalky and tastes disgusting.

^Perhaps because he or she needs to have a supply of water in his or her bedroom that is at ambient temperature and does not smell of chlorine as he or she needs to keep himself or herself hydrated.^

Ours smells strongly of chlorine sometimes, EP
It's a good idea to buy a filter jug rather than bottled water. We assume plastic bottles are responsibly recycled but it is not always the case.

I did want to buy a couple of bottles of soda water but none was available from Tesco (found some in Spar).

I always filter my water, but the filters are expensive and it's cheaper and more convenient at times to use bottled water.

There have been changes here due to the pandemic, but the overall structure is much the same as before the pandemic.

I have been having my grocery delivered by Tesco for many years, it is just the modalities of the grocery getting from the van to my kitchen that has changed.

I had given up driving a few years before the pandemic.

The pharmacy had been delivering for years, just a modality change for the delivery.

Similarly with parcel delivery from various couriers.

Who knows where it will all go. Back in January it was supposed to be gone by June 2021.

Now it seems to be let's all pretend ... whatever is 'chef's choice' for today.

Plenty of everything in the Asda I work in, must admit not as much bottled water but then again it has been very very warm and people have been drinking much more bottled water.

Salad bit low but then again lots of people having light meals with bit of salad etc.

(plenty of toilet rolls) smile

> fresh chicken, tuna, salmon, sardines

That could be an answer to a quiz question,

Name four types of cat food on which VAT is not charged.

growstuff Mon 26-Jul-21 21:47:06

Well, don't tell everybody where this Asda is. I don't even know where the nearest Asda is. All I know is that there have been a number of items unavailable from Tesco, which is something I have never known in the years I've been having deliveries and been ordering more or less the same things.

It's still more expensive than cat food - and, what's more, it's my food.

Our Tesco’s have several aisles with low stock. Water being one of them, when asked was told they have a lot of staff that have been pinged so are self isolating, they have the stock in the warehouse and are trying to get the stock out as and when

I also have one of these in my fridge door (cheaper versions may be available elsewhere)
It will have paid for itself within a very few months

FannyCornforth Mon 26-Jul-21 22:08:00

I actually know something about this.

It’s because pound for pound, bottled water is extremely expensive to transport ie. it takes up loads of room , is very heavy, and is cheap to buy=no profit.

It is also very shelf stable, meaning that it won’t go off, and can be transported and put on the shelves at a later date.

The supermarkets and logistics companies are making decisions about what is, and what isn’t, worth their while transporting

Mice?

But they seem to leave the innards, perhaps they taste too strong.

FannyCornforth Mon 26-Jul-21 22:11:33

In addition, you might find (as I have) that uk brands of water such as Buxton and Harrogate Springs are available

growstuff Mon 26-Jul-21 22:12:55

MawBe Yes, I have one of those, but the filters are expensive. I can't change my fridge because I live in a rented house.

Are you still in denial that there are shortages in supermarkets?

growstuff Mon 26-Jul-21 22:13:30

My cats are too old, lazy and senile to catch mice.

Wow! It all seems rather theoretical on the television with the huge numbers and the politicians and so on.
This thread is bringing the on-the-ground actuality.

No it isn’t.
It’s a load of fuss about very little with a degree of hyperbole thrown in for good measure.

The only item unavailable from Tesco and Waitrose deliveries here was soda water (needed for making white wine spritzers so not absolutely essential). Lidl was well stocked as was Spar where they had the soda water.

growstuff Mon 26-Jul-21 22:15:00

That makes sense FannyCornforth. Personally, it doesn't bother me too much, but it does annoy me when posters deny other posters' experiences.

growstuff Mon 26-Jul-21 22:15:38

Lucky you having such a choice of supermarkets! I don't.

I have no idea what you are talking about by “All let’s pretend” or “chef’s choice”
Frankly, other than face coverings and delivery drivers not bringing shopping into the house, what else has changed?
I have never heard more of a meal being made of something so simple. And not being Rapunzel I feel no need to shout out from an upstairs window.
The transfer of groceries from the delivery crates to my own bags on the doorstep is a matter of only a few minutes. I have never been expected to do that myself, the driver does it all, I just stand three or four of those big square bottomed bags on the doormat and leave him/her to it. He or she stands back and I lift the bags over the threshold. Simple.
Hermes/DPD/Amazon couriers leave parcels propped up against the door and take a photograph. They are usually at least halfway down the drive by the time I open the door.
Why make your life so complicated?

( Isn’t “modality” just a fancy way of saying “method” ?)

Indeed! People in eastern Europe survived for decades on what was available in the shops. hmm

The lack of bottled water really is a First World problem, isn't it.
