Spinster.

Makes me visualise a thin, grey-haired, timid, sad lady.

Very out dated for today’s hip young singletons.

Ditto to ‘nom’!

And ‘amazing’ - so overused. It’d be amazing if aliens had landed in my garden overnight but alas all I have is five monster Triffids, aka tomato plants whose side shoots I neglected to pinch out lately, since every time I thought of it the rain was coming down in tropical sheets.

Nom Nom for food.

Callistemon Wed 11-Aug-21 10:44:01

Pinch of nom

It's just cringeworthy!

Word “Bap “ sends my teeth on edge

I agree, "With child" is so much more poetic and discriptive.

Seriously??!!

On the lines of ‘should of’, I don’t like ‘them ones’ instead of ‘those ones’. Are these things not corrected at school?

Savvy Wed 11-Aug-21 00:34:38

Its the shortening of words that irritate me, fab instead of fabulous, natch instead of naturally, and don't get me started on the word lush.

Also, 'should/would/could of' when it should be 'should/would/could have.'

Any Swear word

Enchantress Wed 11-Aug-21 00:18:42

The above was in response to another poster mentioning the word pregnant as an annoying word.

For some unknown reason I don't like saying the word "breast" even though I am the owner of two of them. I worked with a lady who had the same inhibition. She came up with the substitute expression "chimney chest".

Dressagediva123 Tue 10-Aug-21 22:39:13

Awesome - irritates the hell out of me !

Kryptonite Tue 10-Aug-21 22:20:46

Best practice.

Ealdemodor Tue 10-Aug-21 22:19:02

Infuriated me when actresses are referred to as actors.

GrannyGear Tue 10-Aug-21 22:14:46

I don't mind any words said or written in full. What I can't stand are euphenisms : f-word, s-word, n-word c-word etc - If you want to use a rude word, then use it but don't replace it with

Callistemon Tue 10-Aug-21 22:09:30

Mom - in fact all Amerianisms. They make a mockery of our perfectly good English language
People from the Midlands say Mom

Button - can't stand that word
And lots of other words on here eg panties, phlegm,

gob as in spitting or gobby
pox

Hun.
My dislike of this word as a form of address is probably unhinged.

the new trend of "LIKE" throughout a sentence when interviewed

Exactly. Almost all young people are unable to complete a sentence without using a superfluous 'like' every few words.

Hardly “new trend”. Students were doing it well before I retired so I’m talking more than ten years ago.

spottybook

Diarrhea. A difficult word to spell and as a word it sums up a horrible word picture.

Diarrhoea.

To remember how to spell it-

Dash In And Rush, Run Hard, Or Expect Accident.
