Flattered or annoyed

I saw a lady today in the street and really admired the jacket she was wearing. I wanted to tell her so and maybe ask where she’d bought it but of course I did no such thing. Have you ever felt like doing something similar, or has anyone ever approached you and said how much they like what you’re wearing. Would you be flattered or annoyed?

It may be a Glasgow thing but I get women stop me and comment or ask where I got things. I often give compliments too. It usually is the precursor to a nice chat.

What a dreary miserable world it would become if no-one paid compliments anymore. I always like to say something nice to friends if I can but only if I am being genuine and I like it when others compliment me.

I always compliment people on their clothes if I like them. I don't usually ask where they got them but for no particular reason. I wouldn't be offended if anyone asked me. In my case, the answer is usually "the Hospice Shop" but that's OK.

I would be flattered. I've often been asked where I bought such & such and I've always said where, & the price if I remember it.
If I see someone I think looks really nice in something, I'm often inclined to say so. It may be the only compliment they've had in a while, or maybe they're not feeling so great that day, so you might just cheer them up!
A smile is much better than a frown or tears!!

Flattered. I've been asked several times where I had my highlights done. They're natural. A couple of years ago the red in my hair turned yellow instead of grey - what the Helen Mirren commercial calls brassy and I didn't like them at first until I began getting compliments. Now it's a mixture of brown, yellow and silver. Won't last forever, but meanwhile.... I admired some boots a woman was wearing last Winter but turned out she bought them in Rome and they don't sell them in the UK or online.

I was walking into Asda one day when a lady stopped me and said what a lovely top you’re wearing! I was a bit taken aback, but in fact, it cheered me up no end.
I still remember it from 5 years ago.

I do pay compliments sometimes but I have an amazing friend who cannot resist approaching lots of people. I've seen her accost someone who looked at her grumpily, then the accostee's face changed to a great big smile. She does it regularly and brightens up so many people. It's a joy to watch!!

I do things like this all the time, and people love you admiring something and complimenting them. I make a huge effort with my appearance and get loads of compliments too, and what a great boost it is!

Compliment and be flattered.

When my daughter was small she had lots of Lelli Kelli shoes. Couldn't take her anywhere without people asking where we'd got them from. Now my granddaughter has some and they get the same questions.

The only time I ever commented on something a stranger was wearing was met with pleasure. However the jacket I was admiring was 20 years old and had been hand made in Bucharest.

When out with a friend I saw a lady wearing a dress I absolutely loved. Later as we walked around the gardens in the park I saw the lady again. My friend egged me on to ask her where she got it. I plucked up courage and told her how much I loved the dress and the nice lady told me where it came from and even how much it was.
As we walked away my friend said, ' I can't believe you did that?'. It was her idea!!
Anyway I bought that dress online and have had great wear out of it so I'm glad I took a chance.

Oh yes, nothing like a compliment to brighten my day whether given or received.

I compliment people quite often and they have always been pleased to accept it. As, indeed, would I! I must admit the only time I’ve ever asked anyone where they bought something, it was regarding a beautiful mask.

Happysexagenarian Wed 01-Sept-21 13:37:43

I've often been complimented on something I'm wearing or using, (eg a bag) and it's usually something I've made myself which might look a little different or unique. I always feel flattered and pleased that they've noticed.

Likewise I do compliment other women on their clothes and ask where they bought them. No-one has ever been annoyed by my interest.

Sloegin Wed 01-Sept-21 13:46:19

I've often had people admire things I've been wearing and asked where I got them. I've also done the same to others. I've certainly always been flattered and always had a positive response when I've complimented other women.

Two contrasting memories here, Back In The Day (1969!) walking with my "young man" on an Edinburgh street we were stopped by a young lady who raced across the street to ask where I had got my lovely red shoes? I was able to tell her, they are Clark's so widely available-she said she wanted a pair just like that for her wedding outfit!

After moving to the Snooty South I asked a matronly lady (who was slumming in Iceland shop like me) which perfume she was wearing, it smelled so lovely. "You couldn't afford it" came the disdainful reply...no, I don't believe all those surveys which say this is the best town to live in!

It happened to me a couple of times in the US and made me smile for the rest of the day. One not so warm day in San Diego I was wearing a bright yellow dress and shoes and walking along the harbour on my way for lunch and a man sitting on a bench waved his stick at me. He said 'Ma'am you look like a ray of sunshine bringing back the Summer' which I thought was lovely. Can't remember it ever happening in the UK with strangers

Iwtwab12bow Wed 01-Sept-21 14:05:35

I always tell people. Why not make their day? It doesn't cost anything.

Gabrielle56 Wed 01-Sept-21 14:07:12

I've always complimented and been so in return and I always say where I bought stuff!
As an add on: my 36 yr old DS once tapped a young lady on shoulder to tell her a label was sticking out of her top - and was roughly chucked out of a club!!!!! Apparently they considered it assault....... So sad. I hope she forever went around with a cheap and nasty label hanging off her cheap and nasty clothes!!!

Lynn1959 Wed 01-Sept-21 14:17:32

Flattered definitely ?

hollysteers Wed 01-Sept-21 14:21:21

I like complimenting people and being complimented.
The only negative reaction I have had was when I asked a fashionable young woman about her funky glasses which turned out to be Chanel or Fendi, I can’t remember, but her reply was rather disdainful ?
I remember reading that we should avoid the (English?) temptation to downplay the compliment, saying “Oh, this old thing? Had it for ages/only from the charity shop/lying at the bottom of the wardrobe for yonks” etc and just say thank you.

Nannabumble70 Wed 01-Sept-21 14:33:31

Always tell someone if you truly like something, we need more kind remarks in our lives, after all you only pass that way once.

A few months ago the paramedic who took me to hospital for a test admired my black shoes. She also brought me back and again talked about the shoes. When we got back home I took out a pair of brown shoes similar to the black ones and told her to try them on This she did and they fitted her perfectly so I gave them to her. She was thrilled.

A waitress really admired a ring I was wearing a few years back. I was flattered that she commented on it. Still got it now.

I have life modelled for art groups and a lady at one of the art classes said “can I ask you a personal question” I said yes. She said “ How comes you haven’t got any Verrucous veins at your age“ i toolkit as a compliment.
