Supply chain and HGD shortages

My friend and I have just had two nights away in a hotel.
At dinner on the first night we were given a printed sheet of food items not available due to supply chain shortages.
Yesterday my GP surgery rang to say my booked flu vaccination on the 18th of September had to be cancelled due to them being told the vaccine could not be delivered, also my already delayed yearly blood test could not be booked as they have no blood bottles, again due to the shortage of HG V drivers.
When will it end and what else will be affected? We already have a thread about Christmas food shortages, that could be the thin edge of the wedge.

Tesco shop yesterday revealed quite a lot of gaps on the shelves so life could become more complicated. I forced myself not to buy extra of anything but I bet some people will revert to hoarding.

Mostly due to Brexit - serves those who voted for it right! Didn't they realise!!! Probably not going by TV coverage of people who voted to leave! Somewhat due to Covid but less so - just have to put up with that and be glad none of my family so far have caught it. Already seen Christmas food in shops so get it now and store or freeze it! Vaccinations and blood tests - how did people not realise most HGV drivers were European? Not saying anymore as patently obvious to my family but maybe not to those who believed we could go it alone without Europe.

GrannySomerset Tesco had lots of empty shelves today. I bought 2 lots of cat litter I admit as cat has kidney disease and urinary issues but not usual brand as empty shelf. Hope cat uses it! Have had to resort to getting soil from garden recently. Regarding Christmas - main problem just now (hope people find this funny) is that DGS3 aged 3 wants a green gate from Santa! He lives in an ex LA house where all the fences and gates are same colour - not green!

My only response to those who voted out is 'We told you so'.

NannyJan53 Sun 05-Sept-21 15:51:12

When this was predicted, leave voters called it out as Project Fear!

M0nica Sun 05-Sept-21 15:55:38

They are certyainly running scared now.

JaneJudge Sun 05-Sept-21 15:58:05

I went to the pub last night and the only thing that wasn't available was beef bourguignon. I had my first cold draught pint of lager in a pub since mid February last year smile then I had another. I could hardly eat my meal as I was so giddy about being out blush Sorry, I realise this has bugger all to do with the thread.

Co-op had full shelves and lots of gaps this afternoon. Lots of fresh fruit and veg though and chocolate. A lot of the beer cabinet was emptied but there was planets of wine

JaneJudge Sun 05-Sept-21 15:59:37

Btw I don't normally drink lager with a meal, I would normally drink wine but I was so over excited at the thought of a cold draught lager I threw caution to the wind. Oh it was lush [lush]

Galaxy Sun 05-Sept-21 16:03:22

Well it was obviously you who emptied the beer cabinetsmile. Glad you had a lovely night.
We have just come back from holiday and the lack of staff everywhere was noticeable as well. Obviously this could be covid as well. We visited a service station on the way home, I know service stations are generally bad, but the standard of cleanliness was dire, there were no staff visible at all.

JaneJudge Sun 05-Sept-21 16:08:11

I don't really drink beer at home smile It was nice to do something normal.

I wonder if staff are being pinged more in tourist spots or having to isolate? Our care team were being pinged prior to summer but we are not a tourist destination and we always seem to be on the early infection rate curve with covid here.

It is due to a number of reasons, annsixty, one of which is Brexit. which have combined into what could be termed "a perfect storm".

how did people not realise most HGV drivers were European?
Probably because that is not true?

20,000 EU drivers returned home
We are short of an estimated 90,000 - 100,000 drivers

Drivers retired and are not being replaced
New drivers are not being trained and tested due to Covid
Some EU drivers returned home for various reasons due to Brexit: travel restrictions, bureaucracy at borders, exchange rate was not good etc
Economy slowed down due to Covid
Reform of tax rules
Poor pay and conditions

I did vote remain but facts are facts.

Galaxy Sun 05-Sept-21 16:13:16

We stayed at a holiday village type place, without thinking I asked to borrow the receptionists pen, she quite anxiously said oh I cant if I go down then my whole bubble goes down. The service and care industry have had such a stressful time it's no wonder there are shortages, and that's without factoring in the EU migration issue.

Callistemon Sun 05-Sept-21 16:14:03

I'm sure Santa's elves will paint it for him overnight ?

Really?!
A few temporary shortages.....I think we will all manage just fine, running scared indeed?
As one who happily voted for us to leave the EU ( amongst over 17 million others) I can say that if the vote was held again tomorrow I would be voting the same way.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 05-Sept-21 16:39:47

There are HGV driver shortages in USA, Germany, France, Spain and Poland to name just a few.

Worldwide pandemic, people isolating, backlog of driving tests of all sorts.

Alegrias1 Sun 05-Sept-21 16:45:16

Casdon Sun 05-Sept-21 16:49:36

But the UK is one of the hardest hit GrannyGravy13.

Looking at the shops at the moment, I think it will be shortages of non-food goods that catches us unawares. I agree we can make do with alternatives for foodstuffs, but it’s more difficult to manage without other household essentials. Time will tell.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 05-Sept-21 17:17:19

What is the point of Brexit?

Perhaps it’s the (temporary?) shortages that no one voted for?

Or the glass phial shortages

Or the JIT issues

Or the care home severe staff shortages?

Or the fruit and vegetables laying waste (absolutely disgraceful)

Or the building supply shortages

Or the 100000 staff shortage in the NHS

Or the entertainment industry staff shortages

Or the culling of 100000 pigs due to the shortage of butchers.

The cost of £7.4 million to businesses as a result of Brexit red tape.

Or the fact that we are the only country in the world with an internal border

Losing our right to freedom of movement to work and study.

Just look at how the red tops are crowing over the Brexit success - you wish.

Britain is in unmanaged decline.

Perhaps the point of Brexit?

No not really all down to Brexit, otherwise why have the EU got the same problem. Easy to blame something you disapprove of

eminetra.co.nz/now-lorry-driver-shortage-hits-europe-germany-france-and-spain-suffer-shortfall-of-400000/361464/

M0nica Sun 05-Sept-21 17:26:41

Our HGV driver shortage is caused by the fact that many lorries and delivery van drivers were EU citizens and returned home when Brexit was announced.

COVID, certainly exacerbated the problem, but even if driver training and testing had continued during the COVID lockdowns, there would still be a shortage of lorry drivers.

The training costs £3,000 - £5,000 and the people who would be willing to train as HGV drivers, are unlikely to have that kind of money on hand, and may have problems borrowing such sums.

Casdon Sun 05-Sept-21 17:28:10

But a shortfall of 400,000 across Europe is not as bad as the shortfall in the UK Lincslass, look at the detail by country and here it’s approximately twice as severe.

Could be if they have not had both vacinnes
Double jabbed in England don't have to isolate if in contact

It is a problem across the whole area of transportation, we lead the way I know, but here is a explanation from one haulier. What I’m saying is it’s not all down to Brexit, other variances are in play.

The shortage of blood bottles is a global problem to put the record straight.
