I love this thread!

Whole countries and regions being written-off .... California, Spain, China, Vietnam grin

I lived in Naples for 3 years and visited Rome often. I loved it, charged around like the Italians in a battered old Fiat 126. Never had anything stolen, just followed the rules of bag across body, not hanging off shoulder, and no jewellery worth any money. Loved the food, the architecture and the people I met were lovely.

Bolton.

Gran Canaria. We were hassled by time share people and ladies trying to put bracelets on your arms.

LUCCA
Try finding the nearest sea from Birmingham, Meriden or Warwick. I don't think 52 miles would do it!

Barbados. 6* luxury hotel, all very nice but had lots of stuff nicked and warned not to venture out of the complex! That was in 79/80 dunno if any better now?
Viking cruise on river Elba (not called sewer of Europe for nothing!) Was like a canal trip through post cold war Europe, wait a minute, that's EXACTLY what it was! The boat stank (prob with tanks....) And cabin small sweaty with one porthole non opening, food very good but we were3meals a day, regardless of where we were visiting we had to be back on board for lunch at 12.30!! Utter waste of £4k ( I know!)

Paris (or Dogshit City as we know it). The whole place stinks and if you can manage to walk further than 100 yards without getting something repellent on your shoe you’ve done really well.
On top of that a) in a butchers I saw knives dropped on the floor and used without even wiping - poultry being cut up with knives used for red meat - not even wiped (again!). Cafe - grubby chef appears from kitchen, crosses to an unspeakable loo - back out in 30 seconds obviously without washing. We left without ordering.
And don’t start me on exchange school children and/or students.

Johannesburg. About ten years ago my daughter and I went for a long weekend to attend a wedding. We were picked up by other guests and accompanied to the wedding, thank goodness. We took cabs almost everywhere. We really did not feel safe. You never saw white people walking (except us). We got a cab driver to give us a tour of the city (not much to see). He took us to Soweto. That was an eye-opener. My daughter’s lower jaw just about touched the floor. Never again! But the food was good!!!!

The pyramids at Giza. The pyramids were fine it was just the constant hassle from people trying to sell you stuff. They just wouldn't leave us alone and it ruined the whole experience.

Also, you only every see pictures of the pyramids looking like they are in splendid isolation in the desert. If you were to swing the camera to the left (or right depending on your viewpoint) there is a huge expanse of houses quite close by, most of which look half built. I think it is something to do with not paying tax if the house is unfinished so they leave them with huge metal poles sticking up where the next floor is to be built

I was surprised and disappointed by how close the city was. I think "Death On The Nile" gave me false ideas.!

The poster who hated Portugal must try again. I’d love to know where they were staying, I assume the Algarve but don’t go to Albufeira or any big place. If on the Algarve, go to Luz or Alvor or somewhere smaller. The people are so lovely, the country is so beautiful and there’s an awful lot of country to see apart from the Algarve. We went north to Sintra but unfortunately it’s overrun with tourists, couldn’t park or pause so just drove away. Might try again in November when it’s hopefully quieter.

Rome for me too.
Got stuck there on our way home from Thailand due to the ash cloud in 2010.
Filthy place, rude people. Got hassled by so many men trying to demand money for anything from directions to posing for photos that they drag you into.
I could write a book about that trip!

Pevensey and Eastbourne. Pebbles are so painful on bare feet.

Chewbacca

Bulgaria. It's the only place I've offered to pay double for a flight to get out of early.

Always remember a mate said her first flight to Bulgaria in 80s when the in flight meal was a burnt baked spud set atop some peas, in a foil takeaway tray ???? and the luggage holders in cabin were old cargo nets !

Corsica - unless you are fluent in French and even then you can have problems

Pisa - total rip off, the tower is surrounded by stalls selling cheap tourist rubbish at sky high prices and you have to pay to go into the church (not a donation - an entry fee)

Thought we'd go into st.pauls last time in London....walked straight back out as we refused to pay £20 to enter a CHURCH!!!

Gabrielle56 Tue 14-Sept-21 12:39:10

France in general is revolting as the dog mess is everywhere! Filthy filthy filthy! My DH slipped in some in chalon and broke wrist when he fell! Locals just stepped over him and walked right through the mess, utterly revolting, same in Paris too no idea of cleanliness, no wonder they invented perfume!

Morocco - beautiful place and weather, but hassled endlessly so I just stayed in my hotel or went on organised coach trips in the end, and got room service. (On my last night, the guy delivering my meal hassled me!)

Ditto in Turkey! Me,DH and 3 teen DSs with us and I STILL got touched up and constantly hassled in shops/bodrum souk-anywhere and everywhere, even armed militia at bodrum harbour hassled me!scary.also the loos were like cesspits yuk! What's wrong with these people, have they NO sense of hygiene? Only bar we went to a lot was owned by a Welsh couple , aah....the sweet scent of domestos.....?

and the nightly entertainment fat over tattooed drunk English women playing stripping games, with the poor waiters trying to get tablecloths big enough to wrap round them and this a 3 keys family hotel

Oh dear, now that does sound grim!

Annaram1 Tue 14-Sept-21 12:32:02

Vietnam for 10 days. It rained constantly and there were floods everywhere.

Blackpool

Gillycats Tue 14-Sept-21 12:30:44

Blackpool. Depressing and tatty.
Spain. Unfriendly and generally unpleasant.
Hayling Island. Never again.
California. A huge disappointment.

NotSpaghetti Tue 14-Sept-21 12:22:00

homefarm this particular crossing was the very worst ever.
100s of times worse than the feeling at the airport.
Just horrible.

homefarm Tue 14-Sept-21 12:19:13

Yes, America,
Made to feel like a criminal trying to enter the country.
No thanks never again.
