Turkey! Hated every aspect of it.

Years ago, when we used to holiday with other family members everybody else wanted to holiday in Turkey but, although I had never been there, I had a strong aversion to going there. Having read most people's posts on here about the place I am glad to realise I was right!

Another vote here for Turkey - yuk! disgusting - we left early....

The Gare du Nord in Paris. Dark, dirty and utterly grim - it’s a disgrace to the city.
The contrast between that and London St Pancras is colossal.

I hope never to have to go via the Gare du Nord ever again.
However the station at Dijon (my final destination) is clean and bright, which makes the contrast even more stark.

I agree with you there, Witzend. A group of scammers tried very obviously to rip us off as we used the ticket machine next to, and in full sight and sound of, a customer service desk. We stopped our transaction and asked at the desk why the gang was allowed to hang about there. We got a Gallic shrug in reply.

I just cannot understand people not liking Turkey, I can only imagine they just stay in the tourist hotspots

I don’t like Bournemouth (grubby and depressing) but I love Weymouth.
I love Snowshill Manor, it’s whacky and fascinating, such a mishmash of curios.

Snowshill Manor, a National Trust property.

Some old eccentric found this exquisite Cotswold farm house set in a deep valley in the Cotswold, painted the inside black and filled it with collections of anything you can think of from valuable Japanese Samurai armour to old bicycles. It is horrible. The house should be put out of its misery and return to being the family home it was meant to be and the collections should be dispersed to museums who would appreciate them.

The first room we went in I said to DH ‘This reminds me of your grans house’. I liked the garden though and we went on to Broadway.

The locals didn' like tourists. Stayed in a house that was so very damp and the pavement were covered in dog mess.

I too can't understand why so many people don't like Turkey. It is cleaner than Greece. It must depend where you go (and one year we actually went Marmaris, as we had 2 teenage boys who wanted to go there for the nightlife; it's really commercialised and bustling with teenagers, not for the faint-hearted! But we never found it dirty - though we did stay in a really good hotel). Once we could holiday as a couple again we have been on 3 Gulet cruises around the Turkey coast and stopped at some gorgeous places. As I said earlier on, try Kas or Kalkan, quite upmarket small resorts, no high-rise hotels and the most friendly locals.

I found Turkey much cleaner than Spain, far less everywhere and far less dog mess.

Totally agree with you, Barmeyoldbat. Give me Turkey over Spain any day of the week!

When visiting Bali some years ago, we’d been warned by a dd to avoid certain beach areas - ‘It’s an Aussie Blackpool and you’ll hate it.’

We stayed in Ubud, travelled around quite a bit, and enjoyed it well enough, but I feel no desire to return. I failed to see the ‘magic’ that people so often talk of. Which is a pity, since a relative of dh has a villa there, where we could stay for free if we wanted. It’s nowhere near the sea, though, which is a big negative to me.

TBH I prefer other parts of Indonesia - dh was based in Jakarta for over a year, I joined him twice and we travelled around a lot - I have far more cherished memories of Sulawesi, Lake Toba, and the orang outan reserve at Bukit Lawang, among others.

I also went to Ibiza on a family holiday - 50 years ago! All I really remember is getting stung by a huge jellyfish and the pain. A German woman produced a bottle of whisky from her beach bag and splashed it over my arm, saying it would help the pain. It didn’t. Would have been better to drink it ?‍?

I'm wondering if you stayed in a hotel which was just for older people?

Yes it is Calistemon. We've changed planes there twice when going to visit DS in Aus. Always end up walking what feels like miles to get to the correct check in for the connecting flight.

We only went that way once, well, twice if you count the return journey, Smileless.
The only airport I like is Singapore.

I'll add Heathrow Terminal 2 to the list of don't want to visit again.
