Ecru tights
Panty girdles
Putting coats on top of the bedclothes in winter
Ice on the inside of the bedroom windows
Rag and Bone man coming around with his horse and cart (like Steptoe and Son) and giving your Mum a donkey stone for anything she donated.
Watch with Mother and Andy Pandy.
Indian Brandee
Sanitary Belts
Half day closing in towns and absolutely no shops open on Sundays
May poles
Collecting bonfire wood in a pushchair and knocking on neighbours' doors collecting a penny for the guy.
Billy Smarts Circus on TV on Christmas day - I hated it!
Sunday roast at lunchtime then a tinned salmon or ham salad followed by tinned fruit and evaporated milk for tea
Vesta Chicken curry, Birds powdered custard, Fray Bentos pies in a tin (think you can still get them!)

Birds custard powder in my cupboard.
Vesta curry and Fray Bentos can be got in Tesco’s, but think I’ll leave those there ?

I don’t mind admitting that I buy a couple of Fray Bentos pies occasionally - they sit in the cupboard for the odd day when I really can’t be bothered to cook, or I’m just too tired. We have one each, just with frozen peas.
Hardly haute pie cuisine, but we don’t care.

My gorgeous Sasha dolls. That my father sold when I left home. Never to be forgiven.

The string of lights on the Christmas tree going off. Cheers of delight if they popped back on after Dad had gone round every one and found a loose connection.

Curlywhirley, we are on holding just now and self catering. Prior to leaving home I was shopping for easy food to take away - we wanted to avoid pubs and busy restaurants . I had completely forgotten Fray Bentos pies! as I looked for inspiration on the supermarket shelves and there they were !! I bought two . We have just had them for tea with fresh vegetables. They were more tasty than I anticipated.
Also remember Corona pop, delivered to the door , me and my siblings were allowed a bottle each every week - such a treat !!!!
Another lovely memory is sitting with my twin along side mum with the radio tuned to Listen with mother - happy days . As for American tan stockings - I remember them well.

Anyone else remember Hartnell’s In Love? I adored that when I was about 14.

Harris27 Fri 01-Oct-21 21:14:16

Listening to this and reading this thread has brought back so many lovely memories. I remember rediffusion telly that had the local radio stations on it. The pop man coming around on a Saturday morning. Walls ice cream with the lad on a bike and the fridge on the back you took your bowl out and ordered by scoops.

Shelflife Fri 01-Oct-21 21:17:39

Remember pan stick too !

Hellogirl1 Sat 02-Oct-21 00:08:12

Oooh, I loved In Love as well!!

Coin in the slot TV. Had to keep feeding money into this device or it would cut you off half way through the programme! Chap came round on Friday, emptied the money out, took out the rental and gave us what was left, which we fed back in. How did we ever think that was a good idea??

mrsmopp Sat 02-Oct-21 00:45:50

Milkman, bread and, coalman, butcher all delivered to the door. Most housewives were home all day.

hollysteers Sat 02-Oct-21 01:02:31

Grannynannywanny Yes that’s the one, lethal?

welbeck Sat 02-Oct-21 01:06:29

guess that tv rental was better than not having one !
i'd never seen that, only heard about it since, the coin slot ones.
never heard of the pop man either, don't think we had them round our way.
we had a man who came all the way from france on his bicycle, with dangling onions to sell. that really impressed me.
but oh yes, korky the cat. what a wonderful name.
do you remember the numbskulls. it was really quite an advanced idea. like something out of h g wells.

welbeck Sat 02-Oct-21 01:08:40

people who had their bath tub, a proper plumbed in enamelled one, in the kitchen, covered by a kind of door used as a table, with the taps poking through.
that seemed fascinating to me.

Grandma2213 Sat 02-Oct-21 01:14:19

This is an amazing thread. So many long forgotten memories. It was a different world we lived in, not always great though. Those frozen mornings with the ice patterns inside the windows, scraping out the ashes and setting the coal fire which was my job from about 8 years old! (Yes - including the burning newspapers going up the chimney when I became engrossed in reading them while I was holding them up to draw the flames).

Strangely enough I went to my DGD's first Holy Communion last week and one little girl had the big hooped skirt. It brought back memories of our skirts and the paper nylon petticoats, the bigger the better. How did we sit down?

I was never warm as a child and slept with Grandma's stone hot water bottle. My shins were always covered in bruises from the wretched thing.

DanniRae Sat 02-Oct-21 07:58:54

Yes, I remember "Hartnell's In Love" - my darling mum bought it for me on my birthday - I felt so grown up smile

MaggieTulliver Sat 02-Oct-21 08:15:35

What a lovely feel-good thread; thanks for starting it OP. Brings back so many memories
Double albums with arty covers
Platform boots (

MaggieTulliver Sat 02-Oct-21 08:22:23

Sorry we wore ours to school and towered above the boys
Ponds cold cream
The smell of old cigarette smoke on the top deck of the bus
Those two pint bottles of cider we used to neck by the river
Asking for “two threes please” on the bus home from school for me and my brother
Going to Robert Dyas with my dad on a Saturday morning
Wearing two pairs of tights to school - one under knickers and the other above to stop them sagging
Henna - what a slog to colour hair and the smell!
I could go on and on ?

Ethelwashere1 Sat 02-Oct-21 08:55:33

I remember most of the above especially the hated liberty bodice. No liberty with them, i had to wear a vest under my bra when i finally ditched the liberty bodice, i alsp hated dr whites sanitary pads with loops, great cumbersome things, also the belt that they fastened onto. I used to squirm in embarrasment in PE in case anyone saw the pad.
It wasnt all bad, i remember toasted teacakes done on the fire, drying my hair on the fire, cooking on the fire and many others

mrsmopp Sat 02-Oct-21 09:43:40

Listen With Mother.
Are you sitting comfortably?
Then I’ll begin.

Perfect.
