have you got your heating on yet?

I have resisted the temptation to put mine on. I find that when i am doing things round the house and garden that layers are keeping me warm enough. Thicker PJ's at night keep me warm in bed, wool socks and fur lined slippers keep my feet cosy. When i sit down in the afternoon/evenings, i make a hot water bottle which i put in the small of my back and with a throw and the sitting room door closed i feel quite cosy and warm enough. I am scared of running up a large bill and as there is only me in the house i can complete these economies without affecting anyone else. I will feel easier once i have my winter fuel allowance as i will set that aside to pay towards my gas bills.

Mine’s permanently “on” but is on a thermostat, so comes on if the house drops below 19 degrees in the day, 21 in the evening and 14 degrees overnight! It’s been coming on every morning for about a fortnight now the weather is changing.

Have recently started up the Rayburn which gives constant hot water, a warm radiator in the bathroom and keeps the kitchen warm for the dogs. Keep it in standby so don't actually need to use it for c.h. yet. The thermostat and timer will come into effect when it gets really cold. I also like windows open at night and lightweight bedding otherwise get too hot.
I think it all depends on individuals, their health and - more importantly - what each can afford.

In the north east of Scotland my heating has never been off. It's temperature controlled and timed but gas and electricity cost between 70 and 80 pounds per month in a one bedroom house.

Yes, absolutely! Brrrrhhh!

Cambia Wed 06-Oct-21 11:03:36

Mine is off and on when needed. Log burner and fire lit for last two nights too! I have lots of throws and wear extra clothes but feel the cold very quickly and I can set my Raynauds off in the middle of summer!

I have patchwork lap quilts. I put two pairs of socks on and layers topped with cosy cardie that I am visibly repairing with bright threads as I can't bare to throw it away as it is so cosy to wear. I have been splitting logs this morning building my wood pile. I have 14 25kg bags of coal that I hope will last through winter. I don't have central heating just my multifuel burner. I did put a little coal and a piece if wood on it yesterday to take the chill off. Then it got so warm I was opening the bow doors...

katy1950 Wed 06-Oct-21 11:16:37

Definitely yes and I've lit my woodburning stove

Petalpop Wed 06-Oct-21 11:35:04

Chimney Sweep came today so now we can start lighting the wood burner when we get chilly. DH does not feel the cold and I am a chilly mortal plus he is at work all day and I get soooo cold when the dog keeps wanting to go in and out all the time I have a good excuse to get him to bleed the radiators and get the heating back on because I look after our 2 year old GS two days a week and he worries about him getting cold rather than me and the wood burner is not alight when little people are in the house.

As it was only 13 degrees in my living room I had to give in and put the heating on at lunchtime.

Goodness me, that's cold!! Whereabouts do you live?

Gabrielle56 Wed 06-Oct-21 11:48:11

Just had smart meter for elec waiting fornth gas one..... Keep watching it! 80p! Yikes! Heating been on if falls below18c only , still warm in day with sun and big glass walls but evenings getting chilly!

Sarnia Wed 06-Oct-21 11:52:48

Not yet. Sun streaming through the window this morning. I will put a jumper on if I get cold. I refuse to pay inflated costs until I have to.

cupcake1 Wed 06-Oct-21 11:55:08

Definitely got ours on. It is thermostatically controlled but it does get turned up manually in the evening if we’re cold!

MaggsMcG Wed 06-Oct-21 11:58:21

Mines on a temperature gauge it kicked in once last Saturday and it has on a couple of mornings for an hour. If I'm cold I will override it when needed. I do tend to put an extra layer on first though.

Mine is a bit Hokey Cokey. If I’m in the south facing kitchen, mostly in the morning it’s off. My sitting room faces north so is several degrees chillier and although I close the door and use a fleecy blanket, if it gets cold during the evening I put the heat on. Bedroom is fine as it faces south and stores some heat during the day. I am nearly £300 in credit with Octopus so hoping that will carry me through the winter along with my monthly dd of £70

lizzypopbottle Wed 06-Oct-21 12:27:29

Living in the Frozen North, yes, my heating comes on most mornings. I knock it back a bit if it feels a bit too warm. I see research has finally confirmed that women like to be warmer than men do.... durr... ?

Alioop Wed 06-Oct-21 12:28:02

Heating was on for an hour around tea time the other day as it felt chilly, but my 4.5 duvet is still on my bed as my own central heating system kicks in about 10pm....

leeds22 Wed 06-Oct-21 12:38:56

Flick it on for a hour morning and evening but a bit longer yesterday as it was so wet and windy and depressing. Wearing my winter jumpers now and the winter duvet goes on Monday when we change the bedding.

Riggie Wed 06-Oct-21 12:54:05

Ours is on a thermostat so it is coming on some of the time if ots colder

bear1 Wed 06-Oct-21 12:58:28

i really feel the cold and also have copd, so the heating is currently coming on for a couple of hours in morning only and if feeling cold an extra jumper in evenings

Jaxjacky Wed 06-Oct-21 13:15:10

Ours is on thermostat, at 21, timer for hour and a half in the morning and four hours in the late afternoon/evening. Also a dual control electric blanket, which has not been on yet, the radiators in the two spare bedrooms are off and doors closed. Bedroom window is always open, I too have Raynauds and will not compromise on being warm.
We are fortunate and can afford our average £100pm dual fuel bill, we are not extravagant in other areas.

Foxyferret Wed 06-Oct-21 13:38:39

Not yet, but I took the single duvet off the spare bed and got cosy on the sofa last night. I have my hot water bottles at the ready for when it gets cold cold.

Smileless2012 Wed 06-Oct-21 13:43:56

Ours is on and off as needed. I never think about the time of year, if we need it we put it on but I appreciate that we're fortunate to be able to afford to do so.

love0c Wed 06-Oct-21 13:50:31

Yes, every evening this week. Feeling fed up as we always go aborad for two weeks about now. Definitely can't be doing with being cold as well! smile

love0c Wed 06-Oct-21 13:51:18
