have you got your heating on yet?

I have resisted the temptation to put mine on. I find that when i am doing things round the house and garden that layers are keeping me warm enough. Thicker PJ's at night keep me warm in bed, wool socks and fur lined slippers keep my feet cosy. When i sit down in the afternoon/evenings, i make a hot water bottle which i put in the small of my back and with a throw and the sitting room door closed i feel quite cosy and warm enough. I am scared of running up a large bill and as there is only me in the house i can complete these economies without affecting anyone else. I will feel easier once i have my winter fuel allowance as i will set that aside to pay towards my gas bills.

Our central heating is not on yet but our gas fire is put on at 4 pm on a low setting to take the chill off. Like others, I’ve got woollen throws that I use and DH never feels cold so he tells me. We battle over the thermostat every year ?

My heating is hardly ever on, unless it gets really really cold out we have no need to put it on. The house is very well insulated and we have the windows open 24/7. I too usually feel hot rather than cold.

Callistemon, I have managed to knit one, in squares - but haven't sewn them together yet (tut tut, bone idle here). I do think the dog's claws will catch in it, though, and she gets everywhere. I'll probably put a fleece backing on and give it to a daughter.

Yes, especially as we returned home from 26degrees a few days ago

It hasn't kicked in so far. I plan to keep a couple of windows open every day to stimulate airflow so I suppose I will burn more has over the colder months. I try to follow the planet savers' guidelines and max it at 19.

No central heating here. My husband put the fan away today - without permission I still may need it. I don't feel the cold and like Hetty I have the windows open as much as possible. We have our pellet burner now which is better than the wood burner as it's much more adjustable. I wear sandals and polo shirts all through the winter indoors ( and trousers ) only put on slippers if it's a minus temperature.

Ours comes on and off with the thermostat, which is set at 18.5 degrees. It comes on for 3.5 hours in the morning 6.5 hours in the evening, depending on the thermostat, of course. It has come on this week.

However this week hasn't been helped by having builders in who were accessing the house via the garage, which meant both garage doors, to the outside and into the house, have been open all day.

Our fuel consmption should fall this winter as we have had a single story extension built, but used the opportunity to get rid of the uninsulated roof of an earlier extension (1966) and put a highly insulated zinc roof over all the extensions. This with the insulated floor and external walls of the new extension, plus double glazing all windows in both extensions should make a significant difference to our fuel consumption.

We can already feel how much more even the heat is and how much longer it stays warm during the day - and we have yet to install the heating in the new build part of the house.

We had a new boiler this summer, so I’ll be interested how much more efficient it is compared to our old one.

We have it set at 21c as DH has heart issues and on blood thinners and feels the cold. I’ve looked up the optimum temperature for people like DH and advised 21c so that’s why it is set at that.

It has come on for about 1/2 hr one morning but that is all so far.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 05-Oct-21 19:41:47

It is set to come on between 7am and 9 pm.

We’ve moved into a house with an air source heat pump and haven’t mastered the settings yet. The thermostat is set at 18C but is also on a timer and a couple of recent mornings we’ve woken up to a chilly bedroom. I do think we’re getting used to a cooler ambient temperature - the thermostat in the old house have been set higher by now.

Jumpers and a 'throw' over my knees for now though I have put electric blanket back on my single be for if it gets too chilly....I live alone.

Germanshepherdsmum I have Lupus and osteoporosis arthritis everywhere. I live in the North West. I'm cold all the time so I have my heating on whenever I like and certainly from Late September to early May . There are other things I don't have. Is that OK with you or am I being insensitive spending my money on my priorities

BigBertha1 Tue 05-Oct-21 22:57:13

By the way I am immobile at the moment with a slipped disc.

annodomini Tue 05-Oct-21 23:11:19

The temperature here in Cheshire has been 10 degrees all day and probably less with wind chill. You bet I've got the heating on this evening and I'm wearing wrist warmers as well.

Dammit! Done it again. I must have pressed control/return too firmly.

Jane43 Tue 05-Oct-21 23:18:05

Yes we put ours on at the weekend. We are on a fixed rate dual fuel tariff until July 2022.

We put it on if and when needed, a little luxury which I appreciate, being unable to do so in my previous life.

You can have your heating on all year round if that's what you want - I think maybe your initial post just came across as if everyone should have theirs on just because it's October, that's all.

Well, I had a cold nose in bed last night so I guess I need to turn up my heating from its permanent 18 degrees setting! But I’ve got decorators in for the next three weeks and windows are open all day so I’m waiting until they have finished to change the thermostat. My heating has kicked in most mornings since mid September but it’s not yet coming on in the evening, I do knock it on for a couple of hours if I’m just sat watching tv and feel cold.

I am lucky that I can afford to heat my house as much as I like but I am concerned for those people who will struggle with the high energy bills. It’s not much fun having to huddle under blankets during the day or be scared to have the fire on. I’m currently thinking about the best way to help others, possibly by increasing my donations to a local food bank as I’m sure more families will need then this winter.

We have just had a new heating system, air source pump, our old boiler was oil and also had multi fuel stoves also the rads were old so needed an update. Hopefully we have future proofed it into our old age. It is so nice to not have to bother ordering oil, chopping wood and smokeless fuel, not to mention bothering with the ashes. DH has health issues and feels the cold so have had heating on and it is lovely. Rads in rooms not used are turned off but will put on low when it goes very cold.

sandelf Wed 06-Oct-21 10:44:15

Mmm, yes. Feel a bit guilty reading the replies. Ours is coming on at 6.30am and then stays off once 21 is reached. We are in a new build (no leaks) with a lot of south facing glass - so sunny days help a lot.

henetha Wed 06-Oct-21 10:49:17

Not the full central heating yet. I have put it on 'Once' a couple of times. And there's an electric fire with coal flame effect in my living room which I'm now putting on in the evenings.
It's comforting.
My gas supplier has just increased my direct debits by £5 per month so I'm holding back on the full ch just yet.

Mollygo Wed 06-Oct-21 10:52:09

We have visitors from a warmer country, so yes we do-for an hour while we all shower, then fir a couple of hours in the evening. The temp here is 11-13, so once they’ve gone it probably won’t be in for a while.

NemosMum Wed 06-Oct-21 10:54:50

When I was having chemo in the winter of 2017 - 18 I swore I would never be cold again. Of course, I go and put on an extra layer, sometimes two layers, but when my hands start to feel cold, the heating goes on. To be truthful, living in a Victorian house, I have it set to come on morning and evening the year round, but of course, it doesn't come on if the temperature is above the thermostat setting. The trick is to get your thermostat and timer set just right.
