Can’t help with the plastic ones, I’m the same as you I’m afraid, but the absolute way to go for jars is a simple bottle opener , it releases the vacuum , works every time for me .
I think you have found yet another ‘consumer proof’ product!
Baby Boa Strap Wrench - Colour May Vary www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00096JDJY/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_T0FAMDQ2P9NZ9ZQVZ7EY?tag=gransnetforum-21.
Every home needs a Baby Boa.
My DD gave me one because I have terribly arthritic hands and can't open jars or bottles.
This little darling has been an absolute boon for me - it will open pretty much any twist-off cap.
PS. I would love some 'nit-crackers'.
I reckon the DGC would let me search their hair for any little invaders that might need a good cracking!
I keep an adjustable spanner specifically for this task. It works every time as long as you ensure you place it correctly on the bits you are supposed to press together.
Same here grannie works every time
i own "gadget". this is a multi- size gadget for use on jars and bottles. easily obtainable from amazon.
i was fortunate that the last owners of my house left it behind but i recommended one to a friend of mine and was able to find it on amazon so she bought one there and then.
for both of us "gadget" is priceless.

Only this week I complained to Birdseye about the packaging of their frozen peas. They have got rid of the zip so the whole packet can be recycled. They will lose me as a customer as I can neither open or reclose the new packaging, if OH is not around I just go without.
I can never open a squeeze and twist top ever, OH thinks it funny as he finds them easy.
I cut the corner off packets of frozen goods such as peas, beans and sweetcorn - then just turn the cut end over and fasten with a wooden spring clothes peg (plastic ones go brittle in the freezer). Easy to open, secure - and can be used time after time...
Not being able to grip jars, screw top, cans etc I have a number of gadgets.
Brabantia 400605 universal opener. £14.96
JML hands free battery operated can opener hands free £14.96
Both from Amazon.
Also most jars need the vacuum broken. A screw driver under the rim will achieve this.
I do have trouble getting tablets out of the packs. It was much easier years ago with pill boxes which were also reusable.
I do still have a a bottle opener to opener my Guiness bottle, and a can opener the first things my mother gave me when I married seventy five years ago.
Why does meat now be shrink wrapped in the trays?
Everything is made harder for us elderly.q
Get yourself either a rubber glove, or a silcone based mat can be used, but what I find useful is a gadget for opening bottles, these would be ideal?

This is clearly why this is Gransnet!
None of this would make sense to the mumsnetters, and to be fair I think I was scathing of oldies (sic!) who couldn’t open cans and bottles etc!
To be fair I think everything has become more secure due to Elf and Safety!! Bah humbug xx ???
Its a dangerous job opening some things these days, first work out how it is supposed to be opened, then trying to open the bottle,I wonder how people with arthritis in their fingers ever cope. There are so many different ways of opening tops why cant they all be the same, and easy to open at that.
joesoap my daughter and I have Arthritis in our hands, we have the pieces of silicone which helps, but neither of us can squeeze the sides of lids and twist them at the same time.
So I use pliers, they squeeze and turn easily.

Well, none of my DC nor my DDIL nor DSIL would be scathing.
You'll be old one day (with a bit of luck)
There are many young people who have difficulties too, arthritis is not confined to the elderly.
I use IKEA scissors. There have a a grip between the handles and the blade. This opens wide and you can safely grip and twist at the same time. There is a gadget fits between the lid and the ridge on the jar and loosens the vacuum. I have a blue one not sure what it’s called.
I have found running the lid of jars under hot water to expand it then using a jar opener tool such as described here works most of the time for me. I also have trouble lifting the lids on shampoo bottles etc as I'm sure the lip has got smaller in recent years. Or am I just weaker now.
For opening jars like jam, give them a good clout a couple of times on the jar rim with a wooden spoon. Works for me every time. Sometimes you hear the seal pop, sometimes not.
Hi Folks, haven't read then all. Did anyone suggest, ask a child?
I agree with the people who suggested taking it back to Tescos.
If shops were inundated with such customers, they would press
manufacturers to provide easier tops. I am elderly and disabled, and often have to wait for my helper to come in to
get things undone, despite having two helpful gadgets.
It's the washing machine pods boxes that defeat me. The plastic ones with the two tab things that you are supposed to press while opening the lid. Fortunately my dear husband can open them.
I know they have to be secure enough to prevent small children getting in to them, they do look like jelly sweeties.
They also prevent Grannies getting into them too.
