Does anybody know an easy way to open the cap on this mouthwash bottle? I have just spent over 10 minutes trying to open it, even using scissors which slipped and nearly gashed my hand. I give up now ?

Turn the jar over. Pour boiling water round the lid, works for me

Buy a different brand of mouthwash next time which hopefully won’t be such a trial that this one was Shinamae.
It’s a bit defeatist but that must have been so annoying…..

I have a friend in her 80s who has a weak dominant hand so she struggles to open things.

She lives in a small town and the bus stop is right outside her house. When she struggles to upen things, she waits till it's time for the bus to pass and either asks waiting passengers to open the item or stops the bus and gets the friendly driver to do it. Ingenious!

You can buy a tool specifically for opening these kind of bottles.

Otherwise if a tea towel or pliers don't work, try a piece of non-slip synthetic rubber matting, and use it as you would the tea towel.

Otherwise, go back to the shop and get an nice young shop assistent (male if you are female, female if you are male) to open it for you.

Or do as one old lady I knew. Take it with you to church on Sunday and get one of the other churchgoers to practise Christian charity by opening it for you.

Keep your fingers out of the way if using scanners etc.
I've had some slip off and trap my bloody finger!
Ouch!

Go back to the shop where you bought it and ask them to do it for you. I've done that with a jar before and they also struggled.

Well, I was just looking at my printer/scanner and thinking that the lid is quite gentle ...

Can you remember the name of the tool please?

There's a gadget you can buy that has all different sizes and also something to help with ring pulls and the yoghurt top thingies. I forget what its called. I have one it helps sometimes but not always. I use rubber gloves for tops which seem to do the trick.

I can actually manage jars and ring pulls and things it’s just this damn mouthwash that is the problem, I did try another brand and it had the same problem. I think it’s because it’s on the cheaper side, if you want to spend £4 on mouthwash then I don’t think you get this problem….?

Whoops I think I over problemed myself there….?

I've come to the conclusion everything is designed by and for 25 year old men! I'm struggling with various things and am not particularly unfit: bottles, jars, medicine containers; things on top shelves; folding tables at our church group; the background music on dramas which makes the speech less audible; lots of other things.....
They should have a panel of over-sixties who test things out and reject the design if it doesn't work for them. I'd volunteer.

Jars are easy to open ,just stab a hole in the lid to release the vacuum

Right! See the two smooth thumb shaped panels on the cap rim? Squeeze them in with thumb and forefinger and twist! Should open fine hope helps?

Noooooo! We're not savages darling?

Applegran Sat 06-Nov-21 09:51:23

You can just use a tea spoon to press upwards (lever it upwards) on the rim of the lid of e.g. a jar of jam, until the vacuum is released. Then it opens easily. But why do manufacturers not realise the problems they are creating with so many lids and putting off customers? Safety is important of course - but so is being able actually to access whatever is in the jar or bottle!

What a lovely thought that would be but I’m afraid it doesn’t work like that it’s the little pieces of plastic that are holding the cap on the bottle and there are several of them and they are so tough.. but thanks anyway

There are electric jar openers that adjust to the size of the jar. I bought one from Coopers of Stortfood, but they are on Amazon and the like.
