Idle thoughts really…….

Browsing through the Daily Mail (yes sorry) website whilst drinking my coffee. An article on Kate Middleton (ouch) no longer taking a handbag with her on engagements.

My first thought was where does she keep her hankie.

Then I went on to I suppose an aide carries it. But would you want to have to turn to an aide in the middle of a visit and ask for a hankie!

Then I went on to you know I’ve never seen a Royal (or any other celebrity) photographed/filmed blowing their nose.

Do they squirt something up it beforehand to stop it running?

I mean, even without a cold I still have to blow my nose sometimes, particularly in the open air.

Do I have an over runny nose?

All observations on my Idle thoughts welcome….

Just going off kilter here, but it amazes me how we never see to see royalty yawn, I can yawn all day......and going back to the thread, I aways seem to need to blow my nose, especially if wearing a mask !!! So hankies are a necessity, but only throw away ones.

Maybe she tucks one in her bra. Or maybe she has a discrete pocket in all her clothes.

Lizzie44 Sun 14-Nov-21 10:40:55

Oh dear, another worry. Next time I shake a Royal's hand will it be germ-ridden?

Davida1968 Sun 14-Nov-21 10:40:17

Peasblossom, that's where I keep my hankie if I've no pocket - in my bra! (Hankies always fall out of my sleeves.) I feel sure that the ladies-and-gentlemen-in-waiting carry everything a Royal might need, and that they have ways of administering to their needs, most discreetly.

Never need a hankie?she doesn’t need money or retouch her makeup so why need a bag?leaves her hands more free to shake hands only thing good at?

Redhead56 Fri 12-Nov-21 18:13:10

If they sneeze in public they just sneeze in their hand even before covid this wouldn't be recommended. What if they were about to shake someone's hand?

Calistemon Fri 12-Nov-21 16:33:38

And, of course, your keys, especially when I give the chauffeur the day off.

I never ever go out without a handbag.
Where on earth do you carry your money, your measuring tape, your shoe horn, your pen and notebook, your folding shopping bag, your painkiller/ indigestion tablets, nail scissors, hotel acquired sewing kit.
Wet wipes, plasters, the list is endless.

annsixty where indeed! ?
Not to mention your mobile phone, some hand cream, hand sanitizer, clean masks, glasses cleaner etc.

I always have a pack of tissues or hanky handy as I may suddenly get a nose itch and sneeze two or three times on the trot!

Don't you think a woman gets to a certain age where buying any item of clothing without a pocket in it seems like madness? Perhaps Kate has arrived there.
It really annoys me that my OH's pj bottoms all have pockets. Ladies mostly don't.
The one thing I wouldn't like about being royal is things like needing to blow your nose, adjust your underwear etc. You would have to be careful what you did with photographers watching every move.

Jaxjacky Fri 12-Nov-21 16:14:58

To get to practicalities for the royals, what about tampons or similar items, or medication. I assume a lady in waiting or equivalent carry them?

I haven't carried a bag for at least thirty years - except maybe at weddings and formal events. My tissue is kept up my sleeve!

My nose and my eyes run in the cold so I always carry a few tissues with me. Most of my outdoor clothes have proper pockets and even one has zips. I generally carry a smallish rucksack with my bag inside. Once I get into town I put the bag over my head and carry it in front of me. The rucksack is used for carrying shopping and more tissues, just in case.

My nose is always runny, when it's cold, eating curry, when it's hot. Couldn't manage without tissues in my bag.

When I was tiny my mum would pin a hanky on the inside of my skirt with a safety pin so that I could always 'Have a clean hanky and say please and thankyou' wherever I went.

Zoejory

Hello there, Peasblossom!

I was quite captivated with your post. So I did a spot of googling. It appears a few of them suffer with hay fever and when a sneeze comes they just sneeze into their hand!

Eeuw! Snotty hands! So unhygienic, I hope they wash them before any handshakes. Duchess of Cambridge is using a tissue in one of those photos.

midgey Fri 12-Nov-21 13:23:36

But how many of you carry a handbag these days? I certainly haven’t for two or three years. I have my phone…..and hardly ever use cash!

^My girls and all the young people I know just carry their phone^

I know phones have heaps of uses, but didn’t realise they could be used to blow your nose.

Incredible advances in technology! ;-)

She would always have a hankie/tissue handy if she tucked it up one of her sleeves.
That’s what I do but occasionally have been embarrassed if it falls out onto a table when eating or drinking.

lemongrove Fri 12-Nov-21 11:25:34

I expect she has a pocket?
I sometimes go out and don’t want to carry a bag, even a shoulder or messenger bag, let alone a handbag.I put a couple of tissues, credit card and keys in a pocket.

MerylStreep Fri 12-Nov-21 11:19:51

I’ve never owned a real hankie and I can’t remember the last time I had to blow my nose. I carry tissues just I case with public toilets.

I take back the glove remark. HM was wiping a tear.

That’s refined.

Peasblossom Fri 12-Nov-21 11:17:01

It’s not a good look, I’m all to conscious of that when I have to fish about for a tissue?

But using your glove is worse. Or sniffing. Or ? the dewdrop!

AGAA4 Fri 12-Nov-21 11:13:57

I always have tissues with me as cold air makes my nose run.
I have never seen any of the royals blowing their noses. Must feel it's not a good look.
