Anyone out there got a lava lamp ?
I always wanted one in the sixties but couldn’t afford to buy one. Now I can’t get my Dan Stevens DVD for Christmas I was thinking of treating myself to one. I’ve seen adverts online for the original ones which are still made, and JL seem to sell a version of the lava lamp.
Tbh I’ve always been a bit frightened of them in case I left it on too long and it overheated and blew up ☠️
Does anyone out there actually own one and would you recommend it ? I’m hoping it will help me de stress.

I had a fabulous lava lamp in the 70s. Adored it.

Many years later I saw some for sale and got one.

I love it. I don't care if it's deemed naff by some

Never had one burst into flames yet!

Do get one and enjoy it!

We have two: a yellow one and a blue one. I like them but rarely think to put them on.Like you I am a bit concerned about the safety aspect and probably should get rid of them but where? Would the Tip take them? They refused our old kitchen lights as they said they were industrial!!

John Lewis have them. We are getting one for DGD3 for Christmas.

I love them. They are so relaxing. They had a brief burst of popularity again in the mid noughties but for us lava lovers, they'll never go out of style.

Just googled how to dispose of them. One says to pour away the liquid but this doesn't seem a good idea. Another says:
Although their formula is a secret, manufacturers of lava lamps claim they are non-toxic. They recommend that you wrap the lamp in newspaper and throw it in the trash. Do not pour the liquid down a drain or flush it down the toilet because it contains wax which can stop up a sewer.

My DD asked for one for Christmas last year. It’s very hypnotic and hasn’t burst into flames yet,

Thanks for that information Chestnut. I will do that as I am concerned about their safety being so old(i.e. the lamps not me ?) I do like them though and it is nice that some are being bought for this Christmas.

I love them! We always called them thrombosis lamps grin

JeanneLeFol Tue 16-Nov-21 14:43:31

OMG - GillT57 - why ????

GillT57 Tue 16-Nov-21 14:45:05

Someone once, way back in family lore remarked that it reminded him of a blood clot! To be fair, it was a red lava lamp grin.

JeanneLeFol Tue 16-Nov-21 14:48:36

Will defo not buy a red one now ???

GillT57 Tue 16-Nov-21 15:02:29

I have probably ruined many people's enjoyment of their lovely cosy red lava lamps now! grin. Sorry x

My mum had one when I was a younger teenager, we spent ages watching it.
Years later Both my 2 children wanted one each for Christmas, one Pink one Green.
That was about 20 years ago. Bought both in JL they loved them, years later I passed them onto a friend who small daughter wanted one, still going strong I believe.
Don't think they will ever date, just Morph into another design.

I had one back in the day. A red one! Wish I hadn’t got rid of it now. Lovely to watch.

Greenfinch Tue 16-Nov-21 16:34:51

I am going to put mine on tonight. This thread has given me a new enthusiasm for them.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 16-Nov-21 16:36:40

I will console myself with my Tesco candles.?

silverlining48 Tue 16-Nov-21 16:38:56

Try Robert Dyas, bought one there last Christmas for gd. She loves it.

JaneJudge Tue 16-Nov-21 16:41:18

I like them too

NotAGran55 Tue 16-Nov-21 16:48:00

Thank you for the reminder - there are 2 in my son’s empty bedroom that I will move to somewhere else to enjoy.

Cabbie21 Tue 16-Nov-21 17:48:15

Got one! Not too keen on it, though the grandchildren loved it.

DillytheGardener Tue 16-Nov-21 18:00:25

I bought one of these for a friend’s sixtieth as she had mentioned she wanted one. The Mathmos brand is the original maker of lava lamps, made in England so presumably safe as houses!

GillT57 ‘thrombosis lamps’ and ‘blood clots’, hilarious, so very visceral.?

Juicylucy Wed 17-Nov-21 11:22:55

I’ve had one for 4 years and I love it. It’s mesmerising to watch and calming. I’ve had mine on for 5 hours at a time so no need to worry about length of time it stays on. Enjoy!
