Anyone out there got a lava lamp ?
I always wanted one in the sixties but couldn’t afford to buy one. Now I can’t get my Dan Stevens DVD for Christmas I was thinking of treating myself to one. I’ve seen adverts online for the original ones which are still made, and JL seem to sell a version of the lava lamp.
Tbh I’ve always been a bit frightened of them in case I left it on too long and it overheated and blew up ☠️
Does anyone out there actually own one and would you recommend it ? I’m hoping it will help me de stress.

I had one with jellyfish floating around in it for a while.
They looked very realistic and relaxing.

Had mine since 1980 and never burst into flames. Never heard of one catching fire so wouldn't worry too much

Chestnut

Just googled how to dispose of them. One says to pour away the liquid but this doesn't seem a good idea. Another says:
Although their formula is a secret, manufacturers of lava lamps claim they are non-toxic. They recommend that you wrap the lamp in newspaper and throw it in the trash. Do not pour the liquid down a drain or flush it down the toilet because it contains wax which can stop up a sewer.

I would love one. Don’t throw it, list it somewhere local or give it. If faulty say so, some wizz person is sure to know how to mend it. I bet it will be snapped up.

We got one for a wedding present in 1980. DH put a plug on it (remember having to do that?) plugged it in and the whole thing exploded. To be fair, I think it was how he wired it, not the lamp itself, but it sort of put me off them. I daresay they already have plugs on these days.

I have one, very soothing to watch.

i've got two and had two more which were given to my grandaughters by a friend.
we bought my mother one of the mathmos lamps many years ago and she loved it. when it didn't work after a time she refilled the lamp and added some blue ink and it worked again.
however when we moved to poole in 1987 we discovered that mathmos was based here and bought my mum another "bottle" and she was so pleased.
i've got the original receipt for thr first lamp and it cost well under £10!!

Greenfinch

I am going to put mine on tonight. This thread has given me a new enthusiasm for them.

Me too. I rarely use mine. I had never thought of safety.

nadateturbesmile.
I really enjoyed watching the yellow blobs going up and down last night though it did take a long time to warm up.

Defo getting one now. Apart from one exploding ( husband correctly blamed ) all the replies are so positive !
But never a red one.
I’m too traumatised after the Thrombosis Lamp reference ???

nadateturbe Wed 17-Nov-21 17:21:21

It's very relaxing and cosy Greenfinch. smile

Looking good Clevedon - you’ve got my all time favourite fish tank as well !! That’s a design classic too! The Biorb ?

Oldbat1 Wed 17-Nov-21 17:41:14

We have the yellow/orange mathmos one. I love watching it. Takes a while to warm up and start the globules inside moving. Recommend for relaxation viewing.

Clevedon Wed 17-Nov-21 17:48:20

Mine is from the 70/80's and still working well ?

Naninka Wed 17-Nov-21 18:15:20

They're jolly expensive!!

Happysexagenarian Wed 17-Nov-21 19:49:05

I had three of them once in three sizes and different colours. They're quite hypnotic and very relaxing to watch, and cast interesting shadows around the room. They take a while to warm up enough to start moving, but I used to leave them on for hours (and once or twice overnight when I forgot to turn them off!) but they never caught fire or exploded. Go for it, they're fun.

One of my sons bought one, he didn't take it with him when he left home, it's in the garage somewhere. He told me once if he could have lived through any decade before he was born, it would have been the sixties, hence the lava lamp. He appropriated my vinyl collection sometime ago, Beatles, Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Who. He was under the false impression, I experienced much of what was going on first hand, maybe I embellished a bit, anyway I didn't have a lava lamp way back then, but I have now, under a pile of other things he left behind shock

harrysgran Wed 17-Nov-21 21:21:19

Yes I've had mine for a number of years it's in the spare room but i think ill dig it out now you have brought it to mind I find it very relaxing to watch

nadateturbe Wed 17-Nov-21 21:49:04

Nice colours Clevedon

nadateturbe Wed 17-Nov-21 22:00:48

I wonder how many of us are sitting gazing at our lava lamps grin

Smurf52 Thu 18-Nov-21 01:03:56

I bought one a year ago for nostalgic reasons from the original inventors Mathmos. I put it on early evening and switch it off at bedtime. I absolutely love it! Go get one.

Shropshirelass Thu 18-Nov-21 10:14:50

I used to have one, loved it. Can’t remember what happened to it. I also had one of those fibre optic lamps.
