Do you enjoy eating turkey?

I personally am not keen on turkey but like all the trimmings that go with it. Love pigs in blankets, stuffing, vegetables (I really love sprouts). Christmas day is the only time that I ever eat turkey but would prefer a good roast beef and Yorkshire puddings. Do you stick with tradition and have turkey because that is what is expected or do you opt for something else that you would prefer to eat? I don't like Christmas pudding either far to rich after Christmas dinner.

We love turkey for xmas but forget pigs in blankets, stuffing and brussels, my idea of hell. Cooked breast down turkey isn't dry, ours certainly isn't and I do love a crispy roast potato or 6 and mountains of vegetables. We eat because we enjoy it and anything else would be a poor substitute.

I dislike any poultry so never eat it .

We like turkey, and use it all up, inc. stock from the carcass. I don’t find it dry, but then I usually rest it for at least 45 minutes, upside down.
The smell of the turkey cooking is part of Christmas Day to me.

One year before she finally moved to a care home (dementia) we went to my mother, and I cooked roast beef, since she’d never been keen on turkey, or chicken, for that matter.
It just wasn’t the same. I do really like roast beef, but it wasn’t Christmassy at all.

Plus I’d ordered a joint from M&S, supposed to serve 6-8, but their idea of servings must be very stingy. I put it in the freezer and bought a bigger one.

I am another who has never understood the idea of 'dry' turkey. I cook turkey thoroughly,(I cook all meat thoroughly, I hate parcooked meat.)

I cook the turkey upside down for the first hour or so and then turn it breast side up. Again we use every single bit of the turkey, including stock. A large turkey is reduced to a very small package of bones to go in the food recycling bin.

No, not turkey. None of us are keen on the taste. We have lamb. Not very seasonal, I know but a really good quality leg of lamb is expensive, so that's our Christmas treat.

I don’t dislike turkey, and will buy turkey steaks, mince or a small boned breast/crown occasionally, but I’ve never cooked a full size turkey at Christmas time. (Although on the years we’ve been to family for Christmas lunch, turkey was on offer - not going anywhere this year). We prefer other meat, such as beef, pork, pheasant and this year we’re having chicken. I find turkey can be on the dry side sometimes.

Yum, I love turkey but probably won't get any this christmas.
So when I went out to lunch with my neighbour last week I deliberately chose turkey at the carvery. With lots of veg, it was great.

Lamb shanks this year as neither of us are keen on turkey.

DH always has turkey, but being vegan I love a good nut roast. You don't have to stay with tradition just what you like. My daughter has fish as she dislikes meat. My sister has beef. Tradition is what you make it. Before anyone says say thing I'm vegan due to allergies, but cook meat for DH.

Vegetarian here. Having a lovely meat free roast with chestnut stuffing and all the other trimmings.

I love turkey but would be happy to eat beef or pork. Specially love cold turkey and fried leftover veg with pickles on Boxing Day.

Turkey on the table is Christmas ! It comes out of the oven onto the centre of the table and carved a tradition since I was a small child. We have all the other meats anytime of year but Turkey at Christmas is special in our household

polnan Tue 07-Dec-21 11:13:30

I just do not understand why turkey is only for Christmas here in Merrie England... wish I could get thighs, legs etc for one! a whole turkey is too much for me.

Matelda Tue 07-Dec-21 11:23:46

Our vegetarian son comes for Christmas every year and always buys an expensive turkey and cooks a delicious dinner for us. Last year he made some wonderful stuffing for his own main. We couldn't get enough of it. This year we begged to have the stuffing as our main too, but he won't hear of it, and ordered the turkey ages ago. I guess that he remembers happy long past Christmas dinners with all the family around the table, so we are just grateful.

we dont like turkey ,having chicken this christmas.

SillyNanny321 Tue 07-Dec-21 11:26:04

Beef tastes nasty, has since childhood, lamb greasy & pork gives me upset stomach so never eat meat. At Christmas usually go to my DS & DDiL. Change this year so not going Christmas day, Boxing Day instead so no Turkey dinner with all the trimmings. As the only time I eat a proper roast dinner I am going to miss it. My DDiL cooks a lovely meal every year. So roll on next Christmas hoping I am still around then?

LilyoftheValley Tue 07-Dec-21 11:26:36

Dilly, how interesting! Do you have porn before or after lunch?! I dislike turkey so daughter and i are having Duck. Other years it has been fillet steak or lobster Thermidor.

Daisend1 Tue 07-Dec-21 11:27:04

Out of all the many prizes in a competition I once entered (unfortunately) I was the one to win a turkey which I do not like. I gave it to my neighbour and this was much appreciated as she was providing xmas dinner for her numerous relatives.

GrammarGrandma Tue 07-Dec-21 11:27:07

No! Vegetarian for 52 years. But I've cooked the beasts.

Alioop Tue 07-Dec-21 11:28:41

I do a stuffed chicken breast cos it's only myself and my sister. When it was the whole family years ago the Boxing day dinner was always better cos it was a beef roast joint, the turkey was boring, but you felt you still had to have it.

Pammie1 Tue 07-Dec-21 11:29:24

Never really liked turkey. Last year we tried a Norfolk Black - expensive and not that much different to a standard bird. Having leg of lamb this year.

sandelf Tue 07-Dec-21 11:32:14

We have turkey breast curry (korma usually) about once a week. Whether we'll go to the faff of roasting is another matter.

Gagagran Tue 07-Dec-21 11:38:01

Just the two of us for Christmas Day. We are having a three bird roast which we have had, and enjoyed before. I'll do roasties, red cabbage and roast parsnips, cranberry sauce and gravy with it and maybe two or three sprouts each - for tradition!

Definitely not Christmas pudding although we do like it and will have it when the main course is something light.

We are going to DD on Boxing Day and I think she is doing fish, which suits us both and whatever it is, it will be a lovely meal as she is a very good cook.

Nannina Tue 07-Dec-21 11:38:47

DillytheGardener- ‘porn’ on Christmas Day !!!!
We will be having pork with all the trimmings as none of us is fond of turkey. Granddaughter doesn’t like sprouts but she has chocolate ones after lunch so she can say she’s had some
