Diana and Charles Engagement

I was watching a documentary about Princess Diana on Netflix last night and started wondering what public reaction would have been if William or Harry had got engaged, in their early 30s, to a 19 year old teenager who had only been on the scene for a few months.

I think there would have been considerable disquiet, not the general delight and cheering that greeted the announcement in 1981.

Obviously even then some people felt the whole thing was ridiculous, but there was also huge public support for the marriage.

Times have changed.

So would I.

Well, I'd like to believe charles was at least a little smitten.
It really doesn't reflect well on him if not.
There is a name for people who just use others, with no thought for their feelings.

I think he was but they were both too needy to make a success of their marriage.

I only read it in the book about Diana, but apparently he was rather smitten until he got to know her, her behaviours and issues.
I think he soon went off her, because he just couldn't be doing with her histrionics.

He’s called Andrew Parker Bowles.

I would settle for Kate's mediocrity happily!!

Me too!

We don't want her to look like a film star, we want her to do the job and show empathy to people - and look reasonably presentable.

She's an attractive young woman, perhaps too thin, with glorious hair.
She scrubs up well, too, for special occasions.

Now, shall we dissect the looks of the males of the family?

I am in my fifties and I would certainly develop behaviours if I were to marry into the royal family.
It is also useful to get to know your partner prior to marriage.

MissAdventure Wed 08-Dec-21 17:10:22

I don't care what any of them look like, actually.
It's just that diana has been dead for years, the forum is miserable, and people getting wound up about the royals seems a sure way to make it more dismal.

I never th she was beautiful. Good looking, elegant and impeccably groomed, but not beautiful in the way Princess Grace was for example.
Kate is beautiful. I have seen her in real life and she really is lovely.

I agree, having seen her once, good looking, glamorous at times but not beautiful at all.

lemongrove Wed 08-Dec-21 17:12:57

They needed Charles to marry somebody who hadn’t got much in the way of sexual baggage ( or the media would have had a field day!) 11 or 12 years isn’t a huge difference, my own parents had 10 years between them ( older Mother.)

Galaxy Wed 08-Dec-21 17:16:24

I dont think it's the age gap more the age they both were at the time. So mid twenties and late thirties is a different scenario.
And just to put the cat amongst the pigeons I think Meghan is more beautiful than either Kate or Diana.

MissAdventure Wed 08-Dec-21 17:17:12

Me too.
She is the only one I would say is genuinely pretty.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 08-Dec-21 17:19:03

I didn’t think Diana was beautiful either. I think Kate’s stunning. How could anyone say she’s mediocre? Beautiful and clever too.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 08-Dec-21 17:20:04

Meghan is attractive I think but not a patch on Kate.

Betterlatethannever Wed 08-Dec-21 17:21:04

I have thought about this too.Today i think it would not have been accepted as it was then.I got married at 18 in 1985 and it seemed normal then but i wasnt marrying a man in his 30s.If my daughers had wanted to get married at 18 or even 20 i would have said they were too young or is it just that teens seem very immature nowadays and are mollycoddled too much.

MissAdventure Wed 08-Dec-21 17:24:02

It's about the power, too, as well as the age gap, I think.

Galaxy Wed 08-Dec-21 17:29:31

I was in an age gap relationship with an older man in my late twenties and it's very much about power. I think it must be almost impossible as a teenager.

Anniebach Wed 08-Dec-21 17:44:09

At 17 I began a relationship with a 28 year old man , certainly no power involved.

Meghan is attractive I think but not a patch on Kate.

I think Kate's beauty comes from within. She seems very comfortable with herself.
Meghan's appearance seems more self-conscious.
Diana was very striking and she certainly knew how to turn heads!

This thread proves that ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’.

Calistemon Wed 08-Dec-21 17:50:29

Being plain as a pikestaff myself, I think they're all just stunningly beautiful.
?

MissAdventure Wed 08-Dec-21 17:53:44

I'm no oil painting myself grin

Galaxy Wed 08-Dec-21 17:56:49

Yes I am not sure my 'beauty' is likely to catch the eye of any of the royal family so I probably dont need to worry about developing issues.

Beswitched Wed 08-Dec-21 19:24:15

They're all very attractive women, but I think Kate is the most naturally beautiful. Diana was reasonably good looking but scrubbed up well and was very photogenic. Meghan, who I have also met on real life, is very good looking but not as good looking ad Kate.
I actually think Sarah Ferguson was more naturally good looking than Diana but didn't have her graceful build and innate elegance.

Yet you were the one who brought Diana's looks into the discussion.

MissAdventure Wed 08-Dec-21 19:50:59

Yep.
Just to divert the thread from pages and pages of vitriol about a dead woman, which I believe (perhaps wrongly) was the way it would end up.
