Diana and Charles Engagement

I have asked Mr Google. He tells me that Mountbatten’s granddaughter, Amanda Knatchbull was suggested and he wrote to her parents expressing interest but it was felt better to wait as she was only 16 (a pattern here?). He proposed to her after Mountbatten was killed but she turned him down.

There was a documentary on television a year or so ago and they named several women who had turned him down.

Anna Wallace was another one. Apparently she refused to play second fiddle to Camilla!

I Googled this story and sure enough there are several reports of Charles being set up with his second cousin only to be refused. The RF needed an heir and a spare so he had to get on with it. Diana’s close connection with the family was a definite plus. What a pity she was not going to toe the party line and put up with the Royal way of living a life. Still, all is well with the present line of succession. William and Catherine are doing it by the book. Nothing to see there.
My heart goes out to little George who is growing up to a life that will depend on public approval of his romantic choices. Of course, the younger generation might care not a jot in the way that our generation does. One can but hope.

Hopefully things will have changed a lot by the time George is thinking of marriage. Could you imagine Charles having being allowed marry somebody like Kate who had no aristocratic blood, and was from a firmly middle class background?

I think the public have changed their attitude towards royal marriages having seen the Charles and Diana fiasco. I imagine the days of heirs to the throne having to marry blue blooded women are over.

So are we not to believe a word that Diana said?

Well presumably her eyes did fall on some people as she walked up and down the aisle. No real reason why Camilla wouldn't have been one of them I suppose.
