Diana and Charles Engagement

I was watching a documentary about Princess Diana on Netflix last night and started wondering what public reaction would have been if William or Harry had got engaged, in their early 30s, to a 19 year old teenager who had only been on the scene for a few months.

I think there would have been considerable disquiet, not the general delight and cheering that greeted the announcement in 1981.

Obviously even then some people felt the whole thing was ridiculous, but there was also huge public support for the marriage.

Times have changed.

At 17 I began a relationship with a 28 year old man , certainly no power involved.
Were you dating the heir to a throne?
No? Then it’s not the same. Which you know, but doesn’t fit into your narrative to always put certain women down

We were discussing young girls and older men Summerlove
best read all posts not just select one you can snipe at.

I read them all.

I’m not sure you did.

With age differences like that there is almost always a power differential.

The fact you refuse to see it is telling.

I think Annie’s point is that however suitable a young woman may appear to be in terms of being able to have children, no one can predict unexplained infertility. In other words, there’s no reason apparent as to why some couples just cannot have a child, even after multiple rounds of IVF.

Yes I got that., but it doesn't change the fact that Diana was chosen as a suitable bride, with the intention that she would quickly provide an heir.

If that hadn't happened I doubt the marriage would even have lasted for as long as it did.

What a nasty post to annie, summerlove. Totally unwarranted nastiness. You owe her an apology.

Anniebach Thu 09-Dec-21 15:14:51

Germanshepardsmum some believe all men are controlling
and all women are victims.

I do not, suppose because I have never been with a man who tried to control me.

Brings to mind the last record my husband bought me before he died ‘She’ ?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 09-Dec-21 15:17:14

How lovely annie. Unfortunately some do seem to have a particular mindset don’t they?

Anniebach Thu 09-Dec-21 15:23:42

Yes Germanshepardsmum some do have a particular mindset.

Yes a lovely song but still think ‘May turn each day into a heaven or a hell’ was an exaggeration ?

I don’t think that comparing one’s personal experience of marriage and relationships with the topic under discussion is useful. Charles needed an heir and he got one soon after marriage. The Royal Family is very invested in the line of succession. I will try to find the photo that shows this.

?*annie*.

Parsley3 Thu 09-Dec-21 15:38:06

The succession is secure.

We know that - think back to Henry VIII!

For having an opinion?

No thank you

Galaxy Fri 10-Dec-21 07:39:04

And of course chatting about a particular mindset isnt at all unpleasant.

eazybee Fri 10-Dec-21 09:22:15

Summerlove, you owe Anniebach an apology for your rudeness.
You choose to disbelieve what she says on no evidence whatsoever, you make a sweeping statement concerning power differentials and age, again with no evidence, and end with a comment that the fact she refuses to see it (what?) is telling.
You cannot support your own argument as it is based on your opinion, to which you are entitled, but you won't accept that people have an equal right to disagree with you.

I should add that therefore it was impossible to be able to predict that Diana would be able to have children, or indeed, if Charles would be able to have children.

I bet all the fertility tests possible at the time were done befoe the engagement was announced though. You couldn't be certain they were fertile but you could ensure there was more likelihood they were

Anniebach Fri 10-Dec-21 09:42:45

So at that time the results could be ‘more likely fertile’

maddyone Fri 10-Dec-21 10:17:03

I’m sure you’re right trisher but nonetheless despite all the tests known to man, it’s impossible to predict with 100% certainty that anyone would be able to have a child, and that includes Charles as well as Diana.

Hithere Fri 10-Dec-21 10:57:05

Were we in the 18th century in the 1980s?

It is so sad this happened in the late part of the 20th century, when the world was more "civilized"

It was a disaster from the very beginning but hey! Royalty! Traditions! Fairy tale! (Sarcasm on with this last sentence only)

Anniebach Fri 10-Dec-21 11:36:09

With hindsight a disaster

Iam64 Fri 10-Dec-21 13:22:36

‘Don’t do it Di’. Said the badge we feminists wore - we knew it was a disaster

Beswitched Fri 10-Dec-21 13:33:59

Yes it was a disaster, but I think a lot of the people involved in pushing and encouaging the marriage should have been ashamed of themselves.

Charles had proposed to several other women, who had all said no. Then this naive starry eyed teenager with no responsible parents asking awkward questions wanders into his life.
The royal family couldn't snap her up fast enough. And her own father was so thrilled at the idea of one of his grandchildren being a future king or queen that his daughter's welfare didn't even seem to cross his mind.

It wasn't just an unfortunate tragedy that no one could have foreseen. Some people just didn't bother to think too deeply about their actions.

M0nica Fri 10-Dec-21 14:56:53

The eminence gris behind the marriage was the Queen mother, or to be more precise, Ruth, Lady Fermoy, Diana's grandmother and an intimate friend of the QM.

Anniebach Fri 10-Dec-21 15:13:58

I have never the interviews with the several women who turned
down Charles marriage proposal, who were they ?

Lucca Fri 10-Dec-21 15:22:43

Maybe they didn’t do interviews (which you don’t approve of I think ?)

Anniebach Fri 10-Dec-21 16:01:45

Depends on the interview, verbally plunging a knife interview
No.

They must have given interviews else how would it be known ?
