Putting away Christmas- when do you do yours?

I am thinking of taking the Christmas cards down and putting away the festive ornaments today but leaving just the tree up til New Years Day. It’ll need to be down then as we’re having our ‘Imp’ from 2nd to the 5th Jan while Daddy takes Mummy away for a break!
I’ll need a lie down in a darkened room for at least a week afterwards, but won’t get one!
The decs are just annoying me now- anyone else de-Christmas before 12th night?

Our (real) tree is so beautiful and was quite expensive too. The shape and scent are perfect, and my daughter helped to choose and decorate it. This year, there were no presents under it as we were in someone else's house for the day and took them there. So, although, I'm gradually taking other things down (because I'm feeling down too) and have taken excess food to the food bank, I think the tree deserves to stay for the traditional duration as, despite everything, it's still somehow working it's magic.

Always twelfth night but they never go up till Christmas Eve. That is my family tradition as well as my husband's family. I think putting up decorations any earlier than the week of Christmas is a new phenomenon and ask myself ...why? wink

Definitely on Saturday ! Love them but they are only for grand daughters so we can take down then

12th night for me.

We put ours up a week before Christmas and take them down on 12th night. I don't like them up too early but don't understand people taking them down before 12th day of Christmas. It's still Christmas.

Mine are staying up until 3rd January this year as DD DS and DGC are all coming here for New Year. Nobody came at Xmas due to Covid so keeping it all up for the DGC

If I had my way (and was rich enough!) I would celebrate the whole traditional twelve days of Christmas! My decorations certainly won’t come down until, reluctantly, the sixth of January!

If you Google it they should come down on 5th January, which is the 12th night. I take them down then but have to Google it every year to check if it is 5th or 6th as so many of my friends insist it is 6th January. I love the house decorated, the lights in particular but it is getting harder and harder each year. This year I have hardly been home to see them, so a lot of effort for very little joy.

Mine will come down on New Year's night. I've had them up long enough now.

My DD will be taking ours down this evening when her DH gets home from work. I will be out with DGD2 at DGD3 birthday tea , so will be out of the way .
DD is having a party tomorrow and is back I work for a 12 hour night shift on New Year Night and wants them down before she starts her busy job as a nurse .

I'll take the cards down next week. and possibly the other decorations, but the tree - I take down on January 6th.

I took the tree down and threw it on the front garden this morning. We have a pile of rubbish that looks like a scene from Christmas Vacation

I hate the bareness of the room when I take it all down, dont mind getting rid of all the cards n tinsell, but I LOVE my little twinkley tree, its a fibre optic one, had it for about 15 yrs, I can quite happily just sit looking at it for hours. Even when I do eventually take it down, I always give it a 'last' half hour!

New Year’s Day- once it’s over I want to get shot of it all ASAP.

Urmstongran Thu 30-Dec-21 19:14:20

I love my Christmas tree, verandah lights, Candle-bridge especially and would definitely leave until January 6th but sadly we have a family funeral to attend that day and we fly out to Malaga on 7th so probably 4th this year - as Himself has all the stressful locator forms and Covid test provisions to sort out on the 5th. He will need headspace!

Up on December 1st and down day after boxing day here. Had enough of them by then lol

NoddingGanGan Thu 30-Dec-21 20:16:01

Decorations here go up around 21st to 23rd December, it was 23rd this year. All stay up until twelfth night on 5th January when everything barring the crib is taken down just before bed. That is the end of Christmas and Epiphany begins on 6th when the three kings are put into the crib, which stays up until Candlemas.

I've put the cards in the recycling bin today. Tomorrow, the tree, baubles and decorations will go in the loft, and I'll vacuum and polish the house from top to bottom

Calistemon Thu 30-Dec-21 20:58:14

Whatever happened to tradition?

Millie22 Fri 31-Dec-21 09:12:13

I'm always reluctant to take down the decorations and our tree is still looking great. No needle drop yet. What I won't miss is the gaudy outside lights across the road. Most of them are stuck behind a big white lump of a caravan. Not sure what is worse the caravan or the lights.

I’d left our cards fastened on the bannister rails but we said we’d take them down today. I guess our dog heard me say that.
This morning she was very quiet for a long time whilst I was busy in the kitchen. I went into the hall to find that she had jumped up and pulled off all the cards she could reach and shredded them very efficiently all over the hall and all the way up the stairs!
If I could just train her to pick up and bin stuff!!!

Jaibee007 Fri 31-Dec-21 10:04:55

Done it already, can't stand all the clutter of cards etc, would happily never have Xmas again, so over it

BlueBelle Fri 31-Dec-21 10:20:51

Going this afternoon fed up with it all had too many worrying things happened over the christmas period I want to forget about it and move forward

KG1241 Fri 31-Dec-21 12:12:57

My tree is down, it was a real tree and it didn’t do well this year. By yesterday the branches were seriously droopy and the baubles kept dropping on the floor. I also have a Labrador pup who thought that was such good fun !!

JdotJ Fri 31-Dec-21 14:05:43

I packed everything Christmassy away this morning
