six tries at getting the word right..... just one word a day...if the letter turns grey it is not in the word..... etc.

Got two letters in the right places first go but still took 4 goes to get it right.

I love this thread, it's fun, the only competition is yourself. I like doing it at midnight, but this will have to stop once I return to work next week.
I had a Grrr moment today as I just used the wrong 1st letter, but this is quite common. I enjoy doing this and it does not interfere with anything I am doing. I am getting quicker too.

Thank you for the suggestion muse. I’ve looked at Wordle on my ipad and phone and now have the technical answer. ?
To the right of the puzzle there is a “flower” icon. I touched this and scrolled down to find #224.
My discovery was more luck than skill!

nadateturbe Sat 29-Jan-22 11:04:10

I don't like words where there are numerous possibilities for one letter. eg dream cream bream. (grumping again)

seacliff Sat 29-Jan-22 10:41:05

Agreed Nannagarra, I remember the word you're talking about. It took me three goes. There is certainly an element of luck.

However I think it's good for me, as I'm doing it (usually) a bit quicker now.

Callistemon21 Sat 29-Jan-22 10:38:19

I'm sticking with Splendid after a dismal four!
?

muse Sat 29-Jan-22 10:38:08

Good 1st attempt. I use a different word most days and never too many vowels.

3 today.

nannagarra. Perhaps it depends on what device you use. The statistic I post is the one from my iPhone.

Skill and luck today for me but I’m watching out for the sneaky American spelling the creators will drop on us.

FannyCornforth Sat 29-Jan-22 10:35:46

It’s definitely the fine balance of skill and luck which is the appeal of the game.
This is how I think of the ratings:

1 - Wowzers! I am Uri Cornforth!(Note to self: do the lottery today)

2 - I am very, very clever and smug today.

3 - excellent; good job (above average)

4 - average; could do better.

5 - damn.

6 - gutted.

Callistemon21 Sat 29-Jan-22 10:32:44

I think I'm slipping because I can't remember yesterdays, PamelaJ1!

Nannagarra Sat 29-Jan-22 10:31:55

Recently (I’ll not be specific for those playing retrospectively) there were three potential answers depending upon a change of the initial letter. If it takes three attempts to arrive at the final four letters in the correct order subsequent attempts can frustratingly gobble up those remaining chances!

PamelaJ1 Sat 29-Jan-22 10:31:09

I am realising how narrow my vocabulary is.
I got it in 5 yesterday but had never heard the word before.
Looked it up so I suppose I’m expanding my knowledge.

Bellanonna Sat 29-Jan-22 10:22:00

5 tries today. I’m slipping.

Choosing a word with the most used letters doesn't work I find - like the other day when the word was KNOLL

Callistemon21 Sat 29-Jan-22 10:09:48

Marydoll

This morning:
Looking at what vowels I had left as none were right first time! plus the only one letter I had got right was in the wrong place.
I put it in the correct place in the second row.
The third row was a calculated guess but with one letter wrong, annoyingly.

Sometimes it's down to luck at getting the first word almost right.

Or, as Morecambe and Wise would say, all the right letters but not necessarily in the right order ?

Well done all those who manage to get it easily.
I wonder if it is luck or is there a measure of skill involved? I play lots of word games and often solve obscure words, but I am hopeless at this!

I am very annoyed!!! grin

There's the rub, Marydoll.
Having used skill on the first couple of lines, a 'feel' for what might be required, the whole thing then degenerates into guesswork to chance on the very letter the setter has chosen.
And thus, your success rate goes down the proverbial!

Alygran Sat 29-Jan-22 10:04:41

Skill? Luck?
First two words today no letters at all! Two right on attempt 3, one in the correct place.
Got it on attempt 4, helped by so many letters already discounted.

Marydoll Sat 29-Jan-22 10:01:33

The first choice has to be down to luck surely, with a bit of skill in choosing a word with most used letetrs.

Callistemon21 Sat 29-Jan-22 10:00:40

Only one letter at first and it took four attempts
I got one letter in the first word but in the wrong place.
Splendid apparently! ?

Mollygo Sat 29-Jan-22 09:52:07

The skill is looking at what letters are left and thinking of possibilities.

Two for me this morning. Lucky first and lucky choice of possibilities second.

Zoejory Sat 29-Jan-22 09:51:13

Well I have no idea what's happened to me. For the first week or so I'd managed to work it out usually within 3 or 4 lines. However, I have now failed every day since Wednesday.

aggie Sat 29-Jan-22 09:47:34

I did it in three today , after two days of getting it on the last gasp !
I think it’s a bit of luck getting letters in the first attempt then skill juggling that information !

There is a measure of skill involved, after your guess at the first line, particularly if you get no letters to start with as I did this morning!

4 for me today.

mamaa Sat 29-Jan-22 09:36:26

4 today

MayBeMaw Sat 29-Jan-22 09:35:02

Three for me too! ?

Nannagarra Sat 29-Jan-22 09:32:42

Three today. No letters in the first line.

Where does the number of the puzzle appear? (Using an iPad.) MNers record results as 223 (number of the puzzle) 3/6 (number of attempts), i.e. 223 3/6.

Thank you in advance.
