I am looking for some warm comfortable big knickers. No stretch, no lace and soft to the touch. That made me think of Pollards. I loved that store.

So many bargains in the big drums and the array of items in the drawers behinds the counter staff was huge.

We had a wonderful shop very similar to Pollards, but now that too has gone.

I googled Ranbys. The store has a very long history.
There was also a pub / cafe called Ranbys on Green Lane, I don’t know if the two are related

The pub closed 2007

Swan & Edgar
Bourne & Hollingsworth

I grew up shopping in these big department stores and miss them. I remember being about 10 in the dress department with my mum. A rich Arab accosted us and asked if I could try on a dozen or so dresses because he wanted to take some back to wherever for his DD who was the same size! (Sounds a bit weird now I think about it!) He bought a big pile and gave me one.

C & A for ski clothing and coats.

These massive stores must have been a real boon to female employment in their time. Probably 500 or so employees a piece?

I agree with some of the posts C&A
Whenever we go to Madeira I always have a shop in there.

Our local Monsoon and GAP. They had wonderful bargain basements with up to 90% off. And I loved our big Next to Nothing and Disconnected stores (Next and French Connection surplus).

Kate1949, I’ve a little ditty stuck in my head now.

Richard Shops are filled with all the pretty things, lots of lovely pretty things to wear….

Kate1949 Wed 16-Feb-22 12:10:55

That rings a bell Maggie.

Hey there pretty things, make the world a prettier place. Come pretty up, come buy your clothes at Richard Shops

They didn’t want ugly bugs shopping there, that’s for sure. grin

I loved The Pier. I know it’s not a shop, but I also miss Carluccios, I was so sad when they went under.

Floz Wed 16-Feb-22 12:19:13

The Pier ! Beautiful homeware.

Kate1949 Thank you :-) I was talking to a friend a couple of weeks ago about shops I used to go to and couldn't remember the name of one shop, it was Etams.

Happy memories.

So many already mentioned I miss, BHS, C&A, Country Casuals, Debenhams, House of Frazer Group :-(

Sadly doesn't seem much point going into town these days as there are so few shops.

Kate1949 the last Monsoon store I saw open was in August last year in Durham. Not sure if it’s still open. They do sell some of there stuff on QVC.

Kate1949 Wed 16-Feb-22 13:39:51

Monsoon is still in Birmingham as far as I know.

ElaineI Wed 16-Feb-22 13:41:19

BHS and Woolworths are the ones I miss most.

MissAdventure Wed 16-Feb-22 13:43:54

Oh yes, Pollards!
It was like stepping back in time.
All those lovely wooden cabinets, and we had a lady who was like Mrs. Overall working in ours.
