I am looking for some warm comfortable big knickers. No stretch, no lace and soft to the touch. That made me think of Pollards. I loved that store.

So many bargains in the big drums and the array of items in the drawers behinds the counter staff was huge.

We had a wonderful shop very similar to Pollards, but now that too has gone.

Woolworths for me too!

We still have C&A here and I just looked at what I am wearing and it is all from there.
I have often taken groups from the UK around the city and it is like a mass exodus to C&A.
Including the men.

In Birmingham in the 1950/60s I would visit Barrows department store, they had a restaurant where we were taken as a treat.

Rackhams

Neataware - I think that us how you spelt it.
More recently East and Monsoon - already mentioned.

Ethel Austin was a good little shop.

I used to love Lewis's in Birmingham. I can remember the long queues to see Father Christmas and his assistant Uncle Holly in the 1950s. They also had a roof garden.

Etam

In my late teens I used to buy bras in Woolworths.
BHS for tights which were cheap and fitted perfectly.
Country Casuals.

MissAdventure Wed 16-Feb-22 14:16:43

Woolworths children's clothes were good.
All those little vests and petticoats.

We had a Pollards near us, but I didn't buy very much in there.
I loved Biba when I was younger ( a lot younger!), I don't think I would buy much in there now mind, I would look very silly.

MissAdventure Wed 16-Feb-22 14:22:37

The worst thing about Pollards was making sure none of your friends knew your mum went in there. smile

Proper old fashioned department stores before they were ruined

NotAGran55 Wed 16-Feb-22 14:30:46

Another Pier fan here.
As far as I know Monsoon are still on the High Street along with Carluccios?

East and Monsoon both available on-line.

As a teenager I loved Etam and then Principles and bussed to Kensington High Street to Biba from Ascot before I learned to drive at 17. Happy days.

Timothy Whites purely nostalgia. Boots, Booklovers Library. Now that I do miss.

When we were 13, my friends and I were asked to model for Dorothy Perkins for a charity fashion show. They paid for us to have our hair done and I was so excited. Sadly the show over-ran and was cut short, so I never got to strut my stuff.

No Fanny it was a small department store, must have been before your time!!
I lived in Heanor and 20 mins on the bus to Derby.
Happy memories.

I loved Ranby's ann. My trolley bus (and later my bus) home from work went from outside Ranby's which had a really rickety, wooden escalator. My Granny lived at the top of Green Lane on Wilson Street.

Fanny, Debenhams took over the Ranby's store.

Cut short before your international modelling career took off!

Yesterday we were looking for a Lancashire potato peeler (the only peeler Mr A will use and he peels most of the potatoes), some blue cotton thread, some crochet hooks, some light bulbs and some nice ribbon.

After visiting the two nearby towns we found the thread (Wilkos), light bulbs (Robert Dyas), crochet hooks (small independent sewing shop) but still have no Lancashire peeler. After about two hours I said to Mr A "I really miss Woolies - we could have got the lot there in ten minutes". Our nearby towns are actually almost useless unless you want to have your hair/nails done, eat, drink, buy a book or buy some throwaway clothes ? Even the Wilkos and Robert Dyas are quite small compared to others I've seen.

Whoops you’re right about Carluccio’s NotAGran55, they have been taken over, and only some of the restaurants have closed - sadly including the two nearest to me, in Cardiff and Gloucester.

Yammy Wed 16-Feb-22 15:37:17

C&A and Littlewoods. We used to stand around in Littlewoods and wait for the Happy Hour announcement before starting shopping.

I remember Huckleberry Willow well Fannycornforth situated on the old Duckworth Square area which is currently being redeveloped & not before time! When I was a child there were a few department stores in Derby, Barlow & Taylor’s which was like something off Are You Being Served & Midland Drapery on the corner of East St & St Peters St. Bennett’s was the last to go, always had a beautiful Christmas Tree, pleased to hear it could be coming back. Annsixty yes Ranby’s was another department store that eventually became Debenhams & has now been pulled down. I just hope Birds Bakery never goes under! [shock

Cabbie21 Wed 16-Feb-22 15:55:28

Another vote for C & A. I always had my sister’s hand me downs but when I was 14 we were the same size, so my first new coat came from C&A, then a skirt for a party, a summer dress, and later an interview suit. Oh and my first pair of trousers. My father would not let us girls wear trousers, but the churches organised a youth ramble for hundreds of young people, and we convinced him we would not be decent climbing stiles in skirts with so many boys around.

Grandmadinosaur Wed 16-Feb-22 16:18:52

My Auntie worked at Midland Drapery SachaMac it was a lovely shop. As a child I remember being taken there to see Father Christmas. Happy memories.

SachaMac Wed 16-Feb-22 16:28:34

I bet it was a nice place to work Grandmadinosaur it was a great shop & a lovely old building, it’s a shame it was knocked down. My mum used to do a lot of sewing & she used to take us upstairs with her to browse the beautiful fabrics. Nowhere like that in town now sadly.

FannyCornforth Wed 16-Feb-22 16:29:08

I really, really apologise for the derailment;
but I want to show Annsixty my Royal Crown Derby owl.
Unfortunately you can’t pm photos, and this seems as good a thread as any.
Thank you!
