Welsh Flag

Love that flag, it’s ridiculous because I’ve never lived there but it always feels emotional like I’m home when I drive across the Severn into Wales to visit my sister. My mum was born in the Rhondda Valley little village called Treherbert.

I have spent many years doing family history, with ancestors from Wales, Dorset, Essex and Yorkshire, and you do feel something when you walk in their shoes. I feel it most strongly in Wales and Dorset.

Just curious ,if it was only recognised then ,what was the flag before that? I know at school we were taught Wales was a principality and I dont remember any flag at all.I'm sure there must have been one ?

The current flag was officially adopted in 1959, and is based on an old royal badge used by British kings and queens since Tudor times. The red dragon itself has been associated with Wales for centuries, and as such, the flag is claimed to be the oldest national flag still in use. (From Historic)

Thanks CasdonI had a much loved Welsh Auntie who only died a couple of years ago and is sadly missed .She has been in Scotland since 1945 though so was more Scots than welsh and she didn't speak about it much .My knowledge is less than minimal ,she could speak Welsh though and my Irish granny and her could converse even though one was in Gaelic and one Welsh .Or maybe they were pretending to amuse us....

I think Welsh and Gaelic do have the same original roots paddyann54 - but after centuries of evolution I bet they would have a lot of differences!

The Welsh flag is not represented on the Union flag.

I think the Union flag should be redesigned with a small dragon in the middle.

There were only two signatories of the Treaty of Union,Scotland and England ,thats why Wales isn't on the Flag,You'll be welcome to take our place when we leave .I suppose though you'd have to sign a treaty rather than be "acquired" or annexed as you were in mediaeval times .

I think all flags are lovely to see - citizens waving them with pride at events or displaying them in their gardens etc. I just wish the flag for England could inspire such enthusiasm. Why is it that instead of displaying patriotism it has such negativity surrounding it? I remember Emily Thornberry sneering at ‘white van man’ who had a flag of St George’s Cross on his house. Shame really.

The origin of the Welsh flag is going to be one of the topics on Portillo's program on Thursday. ?

I am Welsh. Love the flag, love the anthem and love the word "hiraeth". I tried to describle what "hiraeth" meant, the other day, but I failed!

The Welsh National,anthem is wonderful. I used to know all the words as I went to school in Wales for five years.

But I also like the Marseillaise and flower of Scotland. I find the Italian one a bit bonkers…

It's also odd that England doesn't have its own anthem - when competing against other home nations or, for example, the Six Nations, England teams sing the UK National anthem.

I had a look to see how much the Six Bells outdoor paint was - £100 for a one litre tin.
Perhaps we won't paint our garden wall that colour after all.

Mr C was born in the Rhondda. We had a small Welsh flag in the garden until Eunice arrived. We’ll be getting another next time we cross the bridge, it just ‘feels’ right to buy it in Wales.

We rarely see one in a garden here in north Wales but I have one in mi Casa in Spain as most homes fly their lovely red and gold flag and I have my little Draig ???????flying alongside the bigger ??.

I have our flag on my wheelchair and if residents of the Cul de sac where I live hang flags for the jubilee I shall hang our flag in
the garden.
