To Germanshepherdsmum, Why am I being ridiculous? All kinds of buildings such as redundant mental institutions, barracks etc have been adapted to accommodate those who can’t afford to buy housing. What is wrong with the royal family offering some of their excess property to poor people or refugees?

‘Celebrations of’ is distinguished from ‘the Nov 11th parade …’. Note the comma. You wouldn’t say ‘the celebrations of the Nov 11th parade in honour of those who died’. You don’t celebrate a parade.

Redundant mental hospitals and MoD sites have been sold to developers for market housing. I’ve dealt with the purchase of several.
Your suggestion that royal palaces should house the homeless would go down well in a communist country.

But if done properly the accommodation tends to be upmarket and very expensive flats or apartments.

If carried out cheaply for emergency accommodation for eg asylum seekers it is often claimed it is not fit for purpose.

Spot on Callistemon. The most you’d get is a requirement for a proportion of ‘affordable’ housing amongst the expensive open market stuff and the developer would fight like hell for that not to be rented accommodation.

I saw a rather lovely house which had been part of a mental hospital (where a colleague worked) on Escape to the Country for around half a million £!

I totally agree with the ‘monarchists’! If we did away with the Royal family who would we replace them with. Worth every penny. We could get a ‘Boris’, god forbid
