Are you a packer or an overviewer? (Lighthearted)

Some of us are now thinking of holidays and/or long overdue visits to family, this will involve packing. Are you in total charge of packing after minimal discussion, an overseer, or do you leave it until you get there to give your other half the benefit of your observations.

The entire procedure could be fraught with issues. If you do it all, you will doubtless have ‘forgotten’ to pack the disreputable, but ‘essential’ folding straw hat for example. If you oversee, there is a good chance the atmosphere could get decidedly cool before you even lock the front door. The final possibility is that something vital will have been left behind, or indeed packed, that the other party considered essential/dislikes intensely. It can lead to heated exchanges such as “did you really expect to spend the entirely holiday in flip flops./ your suit case wouldn’t weigh a ton had you not put three pairs of formal leather shoes in it for a beach holiday “.

Doubtless there are thousands of couples who sail through these dilemmas, but equally I know several who don’t!

Is there a perfect formula, or should the suitcases go straight back In the loft?.

If we're only going away for a short trip and can fit everything in one case I put my things on the bed and DH packs it.

When my DS and DiL lived in America, on one occasion her parents went to stay with them. They were staying for a few days then going on a "road trip" for a week. They had brought 2 identical suitcases. Before going in their trip they sorted everything into what they needed and what they didn't need for the trip and just took one suitcase with them.

Youve guessed - when they got to their first hotel that night they opened the case and discovered they'd brought the wrong one. No underwear or suitable clothing for sightseeing and travelling.

As it was the US, getting new stuff at that time of night was no problem, but I found the story quite amusing. DH and I are both very "belt and braces" and would have checked three times that we had the right case. But we don't own 2 identical cases anyway...

Definitely a packer and Mr. S. doesn't even qualify as an over viewer. He'll have a handful of items that he wants to take, of no importance to me so I don't even think about them, and if he forgets something which he invariable does, he says "we've forgotten to bring ......"hmm.

We’ve got 3 holidays booked. The Edinburgh festival for a week. Cornwall for a week and Spain for as long or short as we want because that will be in the motohome.
I do all the packing. I can’t trust my OH to put the right shirt/ top with the correct shorts/ trousers ?

We each pack our own suitcases but DH refuses to actually pack his until the day of departure. He reckons it would be unlucky to do so! Inevitably he forgets something or packs all the wrong things. He will never change now but it drives me mad.

It depends on the holiday. We cruise quite a bit and feel our luggage is always with us. In that case we pack a case each. If a flight is involved we pack half and half. We each sort our medication and reading out. I tend to do the wash bag and DH all the paperwork. He did forget 6 shirts on our Christmas cruise , so it was tee shirts or posh black tie.

My late husband was the hunter gatherer from my lists for our packing, and we also did half and half cases as our luggage went missing when we arrived in Australia. It was January and I had travelled in stretchy velvet trousers, it was SO hot!

No lists now as we holiday in thr U.K. - shops guaranteed smile. A supply of essential medication is stored in an overnight bag along with travel sized toiletries, hairdryer, makeup and a razor for Mr C so no need to hunt for those.

When we went on cruises there was always a detailed list, the spare bed held the heaps of ‘stuff’ until they made it into a case.

I’m the packer, always have been as it suits me better that way, Mr C deals with car loading and luggage moving. We’re happy.

We each packed our own suitcases, would never dream of packing for late DH; was always up to him what he packed. Although he would sometimes ask "Do you think I need....?"

Used to try and split stuff after two cases of mine went astray for a few days. Flying to Cyprus, my luggage went to Istanbul, and then flying interstate in Australia , my stuff ended up in Melbourne instead of Adelaide. Luckily both times the airline delivered the missing cases the next day.

My DH is almost a professional packer having lived out of a suitcase all of his working life. He was a long haul pilot. He is very minimalist and incredibly strict. I on the other hand absolutely loathe packing. Leaving it right to the end. I then pack for every eventuality. I often don't wear half of what I pack.

I pack for both of us, always! Mr LP is slightly colour blind, so I would never trust him to pack for me.

I am a list maker, and I have a spreadsheet for holiday packing. This includes separate lists for our clothes, and what I call the "other" things - toiletries etc. The spreadsheet is updated after every trip, and items added or deleted. Separate lists for hand luggage.

The cases come downstairs and are put in the snug 1 week before we travel. I then pack at leisure over the week, checking off the list as I go. Like other posters, I pack half our clothes in each suitcase, just in case.

I have a countdown list in days, as to what needs doing before we go - hairdresser, cleaning, birthday cards to post, charging kindles, changing currency etc.

Take enough meds for however long we are away, plus an extra week - so glad of this when our return flight was delayed one January because of bad weather in the UK, and we spent 2 days at a hotel near to the airport. Always take copies of repeat prescriptions.

I do suffer with holiday anxiety, so having these detailed lists calms me down, as I can see what I have packed.

Mr LP is in charge of booking flights, accomodation ( once I have chosen it!), car parking at the airport, and anything technical.

It works for us. We're due to go away in May, first time away anywhere since May '19, so my packing skills may be a bit rusty!

Take care xx

Blondiescot

We only travel with hand luggage so there's very little to pack. Five minutes and we're done.

Same here - too impatient to stand by the carousels!
I always take a little bottle of handwashing liquid and a collapsible set of pegs on a hanger so we can wash as we go.

DD on the other hand can arrive here for one night with a huge suitcase for all her 'essentials'!

We each pack our own. After boarding school and years of business trips all over Europe it would never occur to me not to pack my own case.

timetogo2016 Mon 28-Feb-22 09:56:36

We also pack our own.
I have a small hold-all and dh has a large case which he rarely uses 10%of the contents.
He says it`s best to be safe than sorry, yehhh whatever.
