How I wish they lasted longer, the garden looks so bright and cheerful when they are in flowers. Now they are starting to go off....been deadheading them..... then you are left with all that greenery and have to wait for it to die and turn brown. Having said that they are one of my favourite flowers as they herald spring to me, along with purple aubretia. ?

Mine have been flowering for a few weeks, no idea what variety they are! They are lovely.

Meant to post a pic.

I'm another lover of daffodils. Lots in the garden, mostly miniatures, most of the taller ones seem to have disappeared. I buy bunches every week which have to be displayed in jugs, I don't think they look the same in a vase. smile

It is always a joy to see the daffs in spring. Really lifts my spirits!

MerylStreep Fri 25-Mar-22 08:31:24

Some have mentioned the untidy look of daffs when dying back.
That’s why I don’t plant them in the ground but have 20 ( it has been more ?) assorted sizes of pots dotted around the garden and deck. When they start to go they are relegated to behind the sheds and at the side of the bungalow.

Yes, it’s a PITA waiting for the foliage to die down. I have a lot in pots (many transferred from gift pots and baskets) which are mostly over now (outer SW London) so I’m doing a lot of deadheading.

The first tete-à-tête in particular, always so early, are invariably a joy, though.
What would spring be without daffodils?

MiniMoon

We have lots of tete-a-tete dwarf daffodils in our garden They are beautiful.

What is the difference between these and jonquils? I recognize them from my own garden. Absolutely adore them but... I thought they were jonquils.

Can anybody post a photo of a jonquil, please?

I still remember the first flowers I ever bought my mum. A bunch of daffodils from East Lane Market in Camberwell. They were for Mother's Day and I must have been 8 years old at the time. Loved them ever since.

Yes like others, I have variety of types and like tete a tete as survive the strong winds we get and also come out first. I also have pots of them strategically placed then retired to quiet corners to go over.

Except for the lovely Pheasant Eye I'd not buy the taller varieties as they get blown over.

I have one clump of small daffs, yellow with orange centres, the petals slightly pressed back. Can't remember their name. They bloomed early, in the shade, and lasted a long time.

Our garden is a mass of yellow and white daffs at the moment. We planted over 1000 when we moved in 10 years ago and they've multiplied since then so the borders are full of them. But I think there are more whites than yellows now. When our dog digs them up we poke them into pots on the patio and they're doing well this year too. The only thing I dislike is deadheading them and waiting for all the foliage to die down, it looks so untidy.

Adore daffodils, hence the name! Esspee your Rip Van Winkle variety are amazing, definitely one to remember.

I have daffodils and some little blue flowers (I can't remember what they are called!) which are situated at the front of the garden by the pavement. A lovely thing happened today - a little girl, her mum, nanna and a little dog had stopped in front of the garden and were looking at the daffodils and obviously enjoying them. It really touched my heart - I am old girl admittedly (in my eighties) but this meant so much to me!!!

I have some Tet a tete daffodils in my garden and I have noticed over the years that the flowers get nibbled. I assumed it was slugs until the other week when I saw a pesky squirrel nibbling away at one grin

I had a brick built planter attached to my front porch and immediately outside my kitchen window before I moved. We planted mimi daffodils in it and perennial geraniums. Every year dh would buy me the little pots of Tete a tete daffs from the supermarket and I would add them to the planter, it was in total shade and the daffs used to blossom well into June every year, then the geraniums began to flower and hide all the untidy daffodil foliage. It was much admired by all my neighbours and it broke my heart to leave it behind when we moved. I could not resist a visit when I was in the neighbourhood recently and was heart broken all over again to see the planter completely bare except for three plastic “box” plants! The whole front garden had received the same sterile treatment, not a living plant to be seen! Moral: never look back!

Duvetdiva Fri 25-Mar-22 13:29:03

Similar to you Merylstreep but I sink the little pots into the soil to hide the pot. Then when they are dying down I lift them again and store them behind the shed for next year
Espree yours are gorgeous!

Madashell Fri 25-Mar-22 14:04:30

Prefer Cheerfulness, a wonderful heady perfume, must plant some for next year.

I've grown pure white Thalia for several years .
I love their delicate white petals .

I put them in the ground and in pots a few years ago and up they come every Spring .

The sap inside daffodils is quite nasty stuff. My daughter was a picker in Cornwall one year and they all were issued with gloves.

Armynanny Fri 25-Mar-22 16:08:24

I love daffodils too and have some in a tub. I had resisted planting them in our back garden because of them not lasting for very long, dead heading etc., but this year I’m going to plant loads as they bring me so much pleasure. Interestingly, our son has planted loads of them in his garden and loves them as much as I do.

PECS Fri 25-Mar-22 16:27:20

I have a mix of King Alfred, they last quite well, & then some smaller blooms which have a lovely scent plus odds & sods from planted pots I have been given. My tulips are out too but have been in about 8byears and are less vibrant than when first planted. Maybe time to refresh!

Casdon Fri 25-Mar-22 16:53:46

I’m interested in plant species, so I’ve been doing some digging to find out the answer to your question giulia, and it appears that tete a tete narcissi are not jonquils. Apparently Jonquils are in Class 7 and 13 and have numerous yellow scented blooms with rounded foliage. It is a small group of Narcissus and confined to just the one group.
Tete a tete are in the miscellaneous category, so not jonquils. Here a picture of narcissi jonquila. I stand corrected if anybody knows better!

Patsy70 Fri 25-Mar-22 17:29:44

I love daffodils, they are such cheerful plants. Here are some of mine.

Bignanny2 Fri 25-Mar-22 18:21:31

The first colour of spring. I love them
