Even if people aren't working they are still entitled to a voice and have the right to protest.
have you ever been mistaken for a race/ethnicity/ancestry that you are not?
Mandelson failed security vetting. Starmer says he didn’t know
I see the eco idiots are at it again. Ten more days of chaos and hardship for the rest of us. Haven’t we all suffered enough? Why are the government and police not arresting them and getting them out of the way so that law abiding citizens can get on with their lives?
It seems to me that authorities are running scared of anyone shouting civil liberties. I’d like them all to be arrested for crimes against the state ie us.
What do you all think?
Even if people aren't working they are still entitled to a voice and have the right to protest.

Go on then Volver, give it to me straight from the holster. I can take it. I’m probably guilty of not expressing myself properly. What I think I’m saying doesn’t always get through my fingertips.
The future of the world important, fair enough, I'll give you that, but I've got to get to Tescos!
I know that's not what you mean but that's how it comes across.
Extinction Rebellion is paying activists up to £400 a week to lead the protests that have brought chaos to the streets of Britain, documents seen by The Mail on Sunday reveal.
Protesters have received payments totalling more than £70,000 in four months alone.
But the eco-protest group privately fears it could face a six-figure tax bill if the money, which is given as expenses, is deemed to be payment for work done on XR's behalf.
I think we all need a nice summer so we can gather strength to keep on going, not another time of demonstrations and disruption on our roads.
Play now, worry later then?
We will all be dealing with so much worse, certainly our children and grandchildren will.
I’m happy for a little disruption now if it makes their lives a little better.
We can’t all be the grasshopper forever. That’s what started this mess.
Summerlove, I am still awaiting for my 'Moscow Gold' that we were told we were all in receipt off backin the 1960's for going on the CND Demos.
Such rubbish - why is that when people care enough to take to the street to protest, the media (well, some of it), loves to put out these totally false stories???
Suppose it keeps our minds very much off the real criminal financial activities of our elected government.
“Are you an insulation specialist now GSM. If so I have questions smile”
To improve insulation on older homes, that is anything built before the 1980s, they already have the lofts insulated so the need to have walls insulated and the latest double glazed window.
Lining walls inside or out is a massive undertaking, months of work compared with half a day to insulate a loft. We’ve just refurbished a one bedroom flat, dry lined it with new double glazing and doors, it cost about £12k, it gets complicated because all the radiators have to be refitted. If we did our 3 bed bungalow it would be £40k plus
Exactly. And insulating outer walls can lead to damp problems.

Exactly. And insulating outer walls can lead to damp problems.
My son did look at a 1930s ex council house that had the external walls done, it looked odd, so walked away.
DaisyAnne @ 12.13, yes it is sad but it’s true that it would produce a far better solution if the old, damp, poorly insulated houses were demolished and rebuilt to today’s standards but it’s just not feasible is it? Whole areas razed to the ground as with the slum clearance schemes and where would everyone go? I imagine the vast majority of substandard homes are privately owned (albeit doubtless many by landlords). If these homes were to be compulsorily purchased, demolished and rebuilt, maybe many for affordable housing, the cost would be enormous and out of all proportion to the problem that needs to be fixed. Others will of course disagree and think it’s easily and quickly done and it’s cost efficient. I’ve dealt with a few compulsory purchase orders in my time and they take ages. Years. Now someone who’s never been involved in a CPO will say it doesn’t have to take that long but the fact is that it does. You’re dealing with people’s property and just the legalities, before a spade goes into the ground, take for ever (objections, public inquiries) and cost huge sums.
It's a balancing act isn't it as demolishing old homes to replace with eco ones would be very wasteful and consume vast amounts of materials and energy.
Not all old, 'leaky' houses are not fit to live in. We once had a bit of a grand flat in a grade 2 Georgian house and the sash windows leaked heat like billyO. We loved living there, were very proud of it and just wore extra jumpers. Imagine trying to put all the Georgian houses 'right' in the expensive areas of town?!?
We now live in 1970s bungalow (grand flat days well and truly over!) and can't insulate more than we already have because of warnings of condensation.
I honestly haven’t seen any signs of disruption here, local news media not mentioning the protests at all, I’ll have to consult Google or Twitter.
For those who were asking, Swampy (Daniel Hooper) is still an activist and works with XR.
They have been at the fuel depot in Thurrock all day today, disruption to local roads.
I see people mentioning non availability of diesel. Is this because petrol is not affected, or does everyone drive diesel cars?
I’m in the North West * GrannyGravy*, it’s a different world up here! The Guardian tells me it’s 3 refineries in the Midlands and South East.
My concern is that they’re justifying the governments clamp down on the right to protest, something that I’ve done all my life and intended to continue doing. I can’t condone the things that they’re doing.
There are many old properties that would cost so much to upgrade to modern standards that demolishing and rebuilding is the best option. I would say a large majority of pre WW2 and some 1950s properties are in that group, certainly if they need other structural work, a roof for example rebuilding is the best option.
The UK is having difficulty in building more dwellings for a population that is increasing at 1% a year, adding major refurbishment on tens of thousand of existing homes is not realistic and however much chaos the activists cause it’s not going to happen.
This is the Stop the Oil eco mob, not the Insulate Britain eco mob.
HTH.
1. Our house which was built in the 1890s has been insulated. Afaik, they made a cavity wall against the original walls and filled them with insulation
2. Sainsbury's petrol station is still closed
3. I am struggling to find tinned sardines unless they are expensive French ones

Some Councils sold off houses at a nominal rate (£1) and the new owners given loans to renovate them. The rules ensured they remained owner-occupied, at least for a specified time.
It has given new life to some areas.
There is a lot of new housebuilding here but without the infrastructure to support it all.

You know exactly how much work was involved!.

It’s the same group of activists Extinction Rebellion, Stop Oil, they will move on in a few weeks and cause chaos elsewhere, it’s what the do for fun.
Oh, thanks for explaining that.
How daft of me to think that they were doing it to save the world for your grandchildren. But they're just doing it for fun. Silly me.

Yep it’s good sport, some climb mountains, some run marathons, others race cars, it’s their lifestyle at others expense. There is an endless list of causes they invent anything that gets them in the headlines.
We did eventually manage to find some diesel today. The man who runs our local garage (BP) has absolutely no idea when he will get more petrol or diesel (out of both). There’s a small convenience shop at his garage too - deserted. He must be losing so much. And how many like my son still rely on oil for heating and cooking (Aga)? There is no gas where he lives. Not an unusual situation. Not that this lot care.
Well we'll all have to decide whose side we're on. Richard "smug" Madeley and Lowri" shouty" Turner or the young woman who knows what she's talking about.
