Exciting I know! I am looking for a dinner (4 x plates side plates and bowls) not made in China but cheaper than Denby! Help!

Ikea

They have ‘basic’ sets (white usually) in Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, John Lewis, Dunelm, Argos, Asda, M and S, Next, etc, etc.

We have these in our caravan -

I was looking in dunelm yesterday but nearly all sets were made in China. Nice set though. I specifically do not want made in China. Websites often do not ut country of origin on

Ah, fair enough.

I was looking for ages. The only ones I liked were Sophie Conran in JL. Very expensive.
Found a very similar Darlington china service in TKMaxx at a fraction of the price and bought an 8 person setting in pasta bowls, dinner plates, side plates and desert/cereal bowls for less than £100. Later found a beautiful salad bowl and other bits and pieces to go with it.

I found ikea plates a bit "scrapey".
The noise used to really grate on me when I worked where 7 of us were eating.

I have a nice little white dinner set now, but it may be too far down the cheap and for some people.

These are made in Portugal. There are a few other in the Anyday range in John Lewis. Scroll down to the bottom where it says Product Specifications and it gives country of origin.

Procook outlet stores. I bought a white dinner set from there intending to use it as my everyday set but it’s such good quality that I use it every day as well as when we entertain. It was made in the UK, and is cheaper than Denby.

TK Maxx had some nice ones made in Portugal.

I would go for the Ikea 365 range, We use them on a daily basis, attractive, hard wearing, they fit the dishwasher and probably most importantly, pretty cheap to replace.

I stick to white for all crockery although my ‘posh’ stuff has a gold band around it and is fifty years old, made in the U.K.
My kitchen set is from Tesco and was made in Eastern Europe, can’t remember where exactly but know it wasn’t from the Far East. I have been avoiding all things made in China for many years.

If you have a Morrisons near you they have some really nice everyday crockery. There are sets of you can buy individual I had 4 plates (white & square) and 4 bowls for £20.00 . Sorry not sure where they are made as it doesn't say on them.

We just donated our 100 year old Denby pots to a local church and bought these.

Have had plates from IKEA but found that they scratched after a while.

Portmerian? Not sure it is spelt correctly.

Ragtime Mon 11-Apr-22 19:34:58

Thank you all..wildswan thanks!

denbylover Mon 11-Apr-22 19:44:58

Aah, just have to don’t I?…..go Denby, it’s gorgeous, hard wearing and you’re supporting local. Yes I know it’s pricey, here in NZ even more so, but when you factor in its durability it’s out on its own. Could you not buy a piece or two at a time and build your set up gradually. Best wishes.

Ragtime Mon 11-Apr-22 19:49:53

Precooked just told me all their sets are made in China shame

All the ones I like in jl are made in china

Casdon Mon 11-Apr-22 19:53:19

I love Denby too denbylover, you can’t beat it for quality and durability. Quite a bit of mine came from the Denby seconds shops, where you can get it much cheaper than the full price online.

kittylester Mon 11-Apr-22 19:55:59

I lovevDenby too and bought all mine at the seconds shop.

They just last too long!! I know that is an awful thing to say but mine went to a good home.

Ragtime Mon 11-Apr-22 19:57:01

Hi denbylover

I am thinking you are right. Holding a Denby plate yesterday in dunelm..there was no comparison! I think I may just buy a piece a month!

denbylover Mon 11-Apr-22 20:21:44

Oh good on you! Yes, buy a piece as funds allow, I’m absolutely sure you’ll be pleased you did. The only bugbear…..how do you choose, love almost everyone of their designs?. Please tell us which one you finally settled on, well that’s if you do decide to go Denby, happy shopping. But whatever make you choose new crockery is always nice.

Purpledaffodil Mon 11-Apr-22 20:31:14

Have you had a look in charity shops? Ours has lovely high end, English made dinner sets very cheaply.

Ragtime Mon 11-Apr-22 20:31:56

Yes I have been pondering which to go for...what's the classic..one that won't be discontinued!
