Pamper parties for children

A friend was a bit shocked to hear her granddaughter will be having a pamper party for her 9th birthday.

Apparently there will be manicures, a foot spa and various other spa treatments, mock champagne, sparkly make up etc

Whatever happened to musical chairs and pass the parcel?

I hate to see painted nails or makeup on children. As was said upthread it can attract the wrong sort of attention at an age when they have no idea how to deal with it. Why a parent or grandparent would encourage it I really don’t. Only a short step away from the dreadful children’s beauty pageants in the US.

A little bit of blue or green nail varnish on an under 5yr old boy barely lasts until
bedtime.
I honestly cannot see that as sexualisation and pamper parties are a million miles away from child pageants.

I had my first manicure and pedicure in my early 50s. That was quite late I suppose but we didn’t have spare cash to justify it. It was a lovely experience.
My gd has enjoyed painting her nails, mine and anyone else who allows it, since she was about 6 but would rather she didn’t get full on with hair, makeup fashion too soon.
Children are children for such a short time.

We seem to be teaching women and girls that there is only one way to look and we should be "groomed" within an inch of our lives. We should be shouting out to our girls loud and clear that if they want to be their natural selves, leg hair and all, then they are still attractive and don't have to spend hours of time and shedloads of money in altering their appearance

Agree 100%

I remember kids getting hurt for playing musical chairs.
Even generation X stopped it for that reason

I wonder in which locations some posters live or how sheltered from the real world

Some of these threads expressing discontent or even outrage for today's world is worrysome, as if refusing to accept the world changes and standards also evolve with it

Objecting to certain changes doesn't mean people are refusing to evolve.
Are you suggesting people should blindly follow every change in the name of progress.
I would find that far more worrying.

No, we have to use our own judgement, obviously

And in my judgment pamper parties f or little girls, that emulate the adult experience up to having mocktails or pretend champagne are not a good development.
A little girl having a bit of nail polish applied while mum is doing hers, or messing around with her mother's lipstick is different.

I started a thread recently about mobile phones on the school bus, many posters agreed with me but many responses were “ move with the times” why is it skin off your nose etc?

It’s the same thing, why can’t 9 year olds interact by playing games, doing a treasure hunt, pizza making anything but pampering, it’s just so sad.

“Play is often talked about as if it were relief from serious learning. For children play is serious learning, play is the work of childhood”.

Those little girls fully made up in adult type clothes fir the American pageants make me queasy. I can’t understand the thinking, if any, behind this and glad it’s never found it’s way across here

The worst American traditions seem to find their way here eventually.

I remember reading a few years ago that one of the groups who organise them tried to hold one in Ireland. There was public outrage and protests and the hotel pulled out and revoked their booking.
I believe they're legally banned in France.the

I agree. Even if the party games we used to play are out of favour what's wrong with hiring a magician, or doing some arts and crafts, or going to the cinema or bowling or swimming with your friends?

Why do little girls need to behave like mini adults? Childhood doesn't last very long. No need to shorten it even more.

I am not familiar with these parties so just googled one at random. I was staggered to read that the minimum cost Monday to Thursday is £100 rising to £400 on a Sunday. No comment!

There are pageants in the U.K.

I have attached the blurb for one

Try again

silverlining48 Fri 29-Apr-22 14:33:58

4 -24 year olds, and finals guess where ( yup Florida) oh dear, oh dear. Horrible for children, adults can make their own minds up, children can’t or shouldn’t be pushed into this .
Let them be children. It’s short enough as it is.
Four? Seriously?

silverlining48 Fri 29-Apr-22 14:34:43

I wish I knew how to attach stuff GG.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 29-Apr-22 14:35:37

I know silverlinings48 I think these pageants are more about what the parents want than their children.

It’s easy to attach photos on the mobile site, underneath the box you type your message is a paper clip click on that, and you can go to photos /screenshot and add

A paedophile’s dream.

silverlining48 Fri 29-Apr-22 14:41:18

Of course, and just what are they putting these children through. I hesitate to say abuse but actually it is really.
Setting them to fail because most of them will, there’s only one winner after all; to believe they are not pretty enough, not good enough.
Very shallow and quite inexplicable. Some people have strange values.

silverlining48 Fri 29-Apr-22 14:42:19

This is a long way from little girls playing with their mums nail polish though, so here’s to childhood.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 29-Apr-22 14:42:59

A child forced into this kind of thing will grow up with very skewed values.

silverlining48 Fri 29-Apr-22 14:43:15

Will check out the paper clip thanks GG

When I was 16 I was at an event where, unbeknownst to me and my friends, Miss something or other was being chosen from all the attendees. I was selected. A few months later a letter arrived inviting me to attend the national final. My parents rightly put a stop to it.

I cannot imagine any parents entering children as young as 4 into these contests, spending thousands of dollars, and travelling all over the place to keep attending them.
Very sad life for the children.
