Pamper parties for children

A friend was a bit shocked to hear her granddaughter will be having a pamper party for her 9th birthday.

Apparently there will be manicures, a foot spa and various other spa treatments, mock champagne, sparkly make up etc

Whatever happened to musical chairs and pass the parcel?

Ooooooo. ( grin

Well done and how lovely.

Thanks GSM. I like photography.

Yuk! Why would a little 9 year old have a pamper party, let them be children for Christ’s sake! Foot spas, manicures! I think it’s more about what the adults want! Totally agree with every word from Germanshepardsmum posts

Each to their own I guess - if it is a one-off bit of fun, then I doubt it will do any harm.

Can't stand all this pampering lark myself - my DDs have stopped asking me to spa days because they know what I think of them!

Thanks Audi. Some posters may think I’m some tutting, prudish old fogey from the back of beyond who has lead a sheltered. Far from it and I wear makeup every day but loathe it, or nail polish, on children. I have always viewed it as sexualising them and thought it looks common. As we get older we may only use cosmetics to please ourselves but when we were young and single we used them to look more attractive to men didn’t we?

My daughter had one as a 11 Yr old. She is 30 now. They have been doing the rounds for years.
Obviously I'm a bad mother but they are fun at that age all products I remember all suitable for age group, just nails, hair and skin care and make up advice. Great fun for them.
All little girls invited had it clearly annotated on invite what was going to happen, no complaints from other mums.
They certainly didn't leave looking like pantomime dames.

You are welcome Germanshepardsmum! Yes! I agree!

Im not very clued up on anything pamper, however, I don't like some of the clothing for girls. Far too grown up for some. Children have an even shorter childhood now, it seems.

An odd pamper party won't do much harm. My GD went to one but her own party organised by her mum all the girls dressed up as exotic fruits and they had just as much fun.
Beauty pageants are the work of th devil and are worse than Miss World.

I've never worn make up or nail varnish to attract men. I wear it because I look better with it than without it. Presumably women who work in all female environments either don't wear any. makeup, or wear it on the off chance that the caretaker will pop in or they might get a male visitor.
My DGS sometimes has his nails painted.

I hardly think a foot spa and a bit of nail polish is the work of the devil for goodness sake

GrannyGravy13 Fri 29-Apr-22 17:00:06

I agree JaneJudge

I wear makeup and have regular manicures and pedicures for me, not my husband or anyone else.

Agree JaneJudge a one off fun time will hardly lead to a life of depravity.
Sounds like it's all kept in reasonable limits,

I said Beauty pageants are the work of the devil. An entirely different thing to pamper parties.

No but whole parties for little girls spent on manicures and facials and foot spas and pedicures and drinking pretend prosecco is a bit sad.
At that age they should be playing made up games or watching a children's film or messing around at a bowling alley or being entertained by a conjurer or all the other things available for kids enjoyment.

That's my view anyway.
Children grow up too quickly nowadays.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 29-Apr-22 17:18:04

I think that nowadays going bowling, watching a film etc are normal every day/week occurrences.

Surely a party should be different and special?

BlueBelle Fri 29-Apr-22 17:25:04

I think it’s awful I hate this idea of teaching children that these things are important no wonder younger and younger women are having all the dreadful treatments and face lifts lips, cheeks, chins, and hideous eyebrows done it’s a very very short walk from pampering feet, hands, faces to make up and more
Let children be children till at least 13 plus take them to a show, a meal out, a swimming party, a play park a bouncy castle

Yes it may be JUST one party but then the best friend will have one then the next best friend etc etc and before you know it the mothers are all outdoing each other in nails, makeup, face masks parties

DiscoDancer1975 Fri 29-Apr-22 18:13:30

Agree BlueBelle. This sort of thing started years ago when mine were small. Mostly they just amused us. The only ones that were a complete no no....were swimming pool parties. Our children went to all sorts of these event parties, but never wanted one themselves. They said you lost track of whose birthday it was, and could actually be quite boring.

We did all the traditional stuff. Parties at our house, games, food, fun. Everyone knew whose birthday it was. Can’t beat it in my opinion.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 29-Apr-22 18:14:32

Spot on BlueBelle. Each wants to outdo the last. Surely taking a child and a few of their friends to see a film and have a burger isn’t an everyday thing? If so there are parents out there much better off than I was. Going ourselves was a treat. Taking some friends was an occasion.

timetogo2016 Fri 29-Apr-22 18:21:12

9 going on 19,not a good idea imo.
Let children be just that, they grow up far too quickly without this rubbish, again imo.

Sago Fri 29-Apr-22 18:27:46

I would assume such a party would exclude boys, our children always had a mix at their parties.

JaneJudge Fri 29-Apr-22 18:33:23

why is having a foot spa or nail polish sexualised?

JaneJudge Fri 29-Apr-22 18:33:57

why can't boys have foot spas or nail polish?
I am confused grin

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 29-Apr-22 18:38:14

I would have been a bit worried about my son if he had wanted nail polish or a foot spa.
