Synonyms for ‘Fat’ that aren’t Cringeworthy…?

Hello! smile
I am fat.

But I do not like saying ‘I am fat’.

But neither do I like ‘curvaceous’ (probably the best of a bad bunch); ‘cuddly’ (bleugh); ‘curvalicious’ (give me strength); or the word de joure ‘thick’ (confused)

Can you think of any acceptable, non-cringe words for not being slender? Because I can’t

Thank you!

I have a big head!
Seriously, I wanted to buy a summer hat after an operation for skin cancer on my face and tried the high street shops. I was told they come in one size only.
How ridiculous is that!
Shoes don't come in one size only.
I found a hat eventually in an outdoor shop which came in various sizes.

Abbondante (abundant, plentiful) is used here in Italy, in an approving way. Bit like voluptuous.

'Well-covered' was my Mother's lovely description

sunglow12 Fri 13-May-22 20:17:11

I heard someone once describe themselves as voluptuous and once overheard a shop assistant describe me as “that tubby lady over there”

Bluemini62 Fri 13-May-22 20:29:55

I was called pleasantly plump once !

BoadiceaJones Fri 13-May-22 20:50:04

My obese DM described herself as "magnificent". She had thighs like ponga stumps. "Junoesque" is good, "carrying extra avoirdupois" is kinda neutral. I'll "plump" for "bonny". Maupassant's heroine Boule de Suif (suet ball) is seen as extraordinarily sexy...those were the days, eh.

Podgy.
Chubby.
Bonnie

A friend of mine was a bit disconcerted when giving her grandson a first cuddle after lockdown. "Grandma, you've gone all squishy."

My mother would use the term broad in the beam.

A co-worker describes herself as cushy, which I think is nice.

Kpnuts Sat 14-May-22 01:02:59

voluptuous

Hetty58 Sat 14-May-22 01:18:26

My (chubby, curvy, large, plump, matronly) friend - just says she's a 'big girl'.

I'm thin (skinny, a rake, bony, sticklike, weedy etc.) but like to say I'm slim! Why is it associated with being weak, when, in fact, I'm very strong?

Lauren59 Sat 14-May-22 05:43:43

Big and beautiful, big-boned, large framed, rotund, fluffy ??

Lauren59 Sat 14-May-22 05:45:57

My grandmother used to say she was “big as the side of a barn”.

Perfect,we are all different, with a few extra lbs you can fight any illness.

ooonana Sat 14-May-22 08:00:47

How about bonnie

Gran16 Sat 14-May-22 08:32:35

I say I'm built for comfort, not speed grin
and if you're larger you're harder to kidnap grin
It's certainly a minefield when you are 'plus size' isn't it. I remember quite a few years ago losing a lot of weight but still plus size and MIL said well done but overheard telling her son that 'her clothes hang off her now' you can't win!confused
I do like the word voluptuous though! thanks

What's wrong with the word "fat"!! We have an obesity crisis and people need to face up to it. If you are overweight you should be made aware of it because it leads to health problems. Too much pussy footing around, and it doesn't actually help overweight people in the long run. Don't dress it up. If people are fat they need to be told about it and given advice.

Wow, judgemental much!

Thank you Songstress

I won’t bore you with my existing ‘health problems’ or the reasons for my fatness, unless of course you’d like me too.

But I’d be interested to hear the ‘advice’ that fat folk such as I need to be given?

Do you think that there is anything that we don’t already know?

I rather think that you may have answered your opening question ‘what’s wrong with the word fat!!’.

In some peoples minds Fat goes hand in pudgy hand with its flabby bedfellows, Lazy and Ignorant.

My mother was an obese smoker who lived to the age of 96.

Chrissyoh Sat 14-May-22 09:55:48

In the book I’m reading a man describes a 20stone woman as “lush “. smile

Soozikinzi Sat 14-May-22 11:40:18

Well covered ?
Chubby ?
On te chubby side?

paddyann54 Sat 14-May-22 11:47:47

Songstress I'll be sure to pass that onto my chronically ill daughter whose weight has soared due to medication.

She never got used to folk in the street telling her she was fat and if she lost weight she wouldn't need her BlueBadge.

Sadly she would as her joints pop out of their sockets with
out giving her an hours notice .Why are people, even mature people on here so judgemental .
She doen't need to worry about people being horrible on the street now ,she's bedbound.

I've been around 2.5 stone overweight for bet part of thirty years. I have recently given up sweets (except for 85% chocolate). I've also given up biscuits, buns, cakes, etc. but caved in over bread although I eat much less of that than I used to and I've now lost 10 lbs over three months. Not a huge amount but I'm not trying to break any world records. However, I call myself 'overweigh'. I've also called myself 'fat'. It is what it is. these names don't offend me in the slightest as they are true. I would also call myself an 'oompa-lumpa' a funny sort of 'fat' name. See the reality of it and do something about it. If you are comfortable with your size then that is great too. I life, there is really much more to be worried about.
