I was doing our ironing yesterday my other half gets through far many clothes than I
Anyway I’m ironing a couple of tea towels and I thought how many people actually iron them am I a minority ? I like to see them neat in the draw in the kitchen. I also iron my OH pants ?? am I mad !!

I iron the cotton and linen ones. The terry ones don't crease. I also iron shirts, trousers and dresses. Not underwear though.

Yes I iron tea towels, that way they store neatly in the kitchen drawer.

I gave up ironing our sheets a few weeks ago.
Can’t tell the difference.
I’ll never get that time back??‍♀️

PaperMonster

Yes, I do. Otherwise they don’t fit properly in the drawer!

They do if you hold them down as you close the drawer.

It has to be a dire need for me to get the ironing board out. So much ironing is unnecessary and when the cost of electricity is so high it is not a sensible thing to do.

I hate ironing but cannot bring myself to just put away without a quick smooth finish. If I am in a rush I do on occasions just fold underwear and tea towels so the pile to iron looks less.
My DIL irons very little my DS irons the kids and his own work shirt daily.
On the occasions I have done their ironing both DIL/DGD love the feel of ironed knickers.
Such a sad time wasting chore but we set our own standards.

If you fold items carefully then put them in a pile they 'iron' themselves! Also, roll or roughly fold some clothing before putting them in laundry bin keeps the wrinkles away.

I have linen tea towels and yes I love to iron them, I’m sure they dry better?

Yes you are. Fold and put them under the cushion seat he sits on.
I used to iron everything and it annoys me that my daughters don’t for their children. If the children stay here I get the iron out as I like to see them dressed with no creases.
That being said if their clothes (not underwear) don’t smell or look dirty I expect them to be worn again without being washed.

I've just found myself setting up the ironing board in the holiday home we've rented to do some ironing! shock

BeEmerald Mon 16-May-22 17:12:51

When I retired the iron and the ironing board also retired. I think it may be in a cupboard in one of the box rooms. Covered in dust.

I wonder when clothes irons were invented? it might give a clue as to why the older gnerations used them more - a modern gadget to them
Certainly they were around in the 1800s, Fennel and round goffering irons were used on ruffs way before then, I believe.

This English folk song, also known as "Dashing Away With The Smoothing Iron" or simply "The Smoothing Iron," appears to originate from Somerset, and as far as can be ascertained was first published by the musicologist Cecil Sharp (1859-1924), who also arranged it. Although most definitely a song, it can also be considered a nursery rhyme.

What’s an iron? ?

nadateturbe Mon 16-May-22 16:59:50

I used to iron linen ones but this year energy is sadly lacking. I iron as little as possible.

foxie48 Mon 16-May-22 16:46:30

Nope, OH irons his good shirts (not the ones he wears in the garden etc) and if I leave something of mine in the pile he'll often iron it for me. When the aga is on it does all the ironing form me, in the summer I live with creases.

Audi10 Mon 16-May-22 16:41:09

Nope

Fennel Mon 16-May-22 16:38:17

I wonder when clothes irons were invented? it might give a clue as to why the older gnerations used them more - a modern gadget to them. One Aunt who was married to a farmer had a big Aga and heated the ironing fitting on the top of that.
There were sort of ironing presses too, one of my Ds in law had one of those. For a short time.
I used to enjoy ironing at one time but never teatowels. Ours are Terry too. listening to a Rock and Blues programme on the radio.
Now husband does the ironing - only his white shirts and large cotton hankies.

Redhead56 Mon 16-May-22 16:37:46

I am an expert hanging washing to avoid ironing as much as possible.

rockgran

I always iron tea towels because it sterilises them. If you have a burn or wound a fresh ironed tea towel is a good temporary dressing.

You must have been in the Brownies with me, rockgran! (See 11:57:40 today).

I don't iron anything unless I have to. DH wears shirts that don't need it and I smooth and fold the rest.
My mother ironed everything even dads string vests but he would not allow her to do his trousers.
My MIL certainly knew how to play the game, Friday night husband at the pub waited till nearly closing time and start ironing shirts which were individually hung as trophies from the picture rail. Oh boy was she adored.grin

Kim19 Mon 16-May-22 15:39:28

Always. My use, my pleasure. Not towelling ones, of course. Takes me all of 1 minute so I don't think my life has been in any way shortened by the indulgence.

sandelf Mon 16-May-22 15:35:10

Tea towels and pillow cases and duvet covers (only once every Preston Guild). Some t shirts, (just look better) damned hankies that OH insists on using. That's it. Apart from the duvet covers it takes 15 mins a week.

3nanny6 Mon 16-May-22 15:33:24

If that is what makes you happy then keep on ironing them.

Personally for me I give my tea towels a good boil gets rid of
any type of bacterial stuff. They don't even get that dirty. All washed folded and back into the drawer.

Elder son was in the Royal Marines and irons anything that moves
Yes, all ship-shape and Bristol fashion ?
