Enough with the jubilee already.

The celebrations haven’t started yet and I’m already fed up with them.
I bought a loaf of bread yesterday and it had a silver crown on it and a jubilee message. When I think of the cost of redesign and printing a new message, it must impact on the price I’m paying.
Then I’ve just seen the itinerary for next week and I’m bemused by the timetable.
There’s a glorious fly past again with 40 planes and helicopters etc. I always remember my husband laughing at previous fly pasts as the UK has such a paucity of planes to do it that some of them were training planes and clapped out aircraft to bulk up the numbers.
I also didn’t realise the bank holidays were Thursday and Friday.
Oh well soon be over and we can have an in depth examination of Meghan and Harry and what they did/didn’t do, who wore what and how much did it cost etc. Ammunition for news articles for months and posts on gransnet.
Bring it on.

Some of you are determined to be rude …My Daughter is Elizabeth ofcourse! I enjoyed Kath and Kim on TV but my children all have traditional Christian names. Somehow I feel that I am an outsider here and not welcome.Dismissed as a Conservative although I grew up during WW2 in a Council house in Liverpool.and have worked in public service all my working life.

I'm a Conservative too - not terribly popular here but I can cope - and a royalist. I'm pleased that HM has achieved this unprecedented milestone but that doesn't mean I have to go wild, decorate my house and have a party with the entire village (which isn't having one as it happens). We can each enjoy ourselves, and if we wish congratulate HM, in our own way surely? Do we have to make a public show of it?

Paddyann There are plenty of Scots celebrating the Jubilee. In a village near me they had a jubilee party at the weekend, Union flags were being flown, the school children told the story of our Queen, Posters of HM in windows throughout the village. Hundreds of people had descended on the rural village, many had travelled from over 30 miles away to be there. Not all Scots want the monarchy to end.

volver Tue 31-May-22 17:23:28

Not all of us, no. A lot of us though.

“Not Kath” though! They were Catherine of Aragon, Catherine Howard and the one with a K was Katherine Parr.

Jenn53 Tue 31-May-22 17:24:29

Me too! All I am eagerly waiting to see are the Queen's never seen, great-grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet!! Will they be seen in public? I do hope so.

Joseanne Tue 31-May-22 17:36:12

Why Jenn53? It isn't about them at all.

Zonne Tue 31-May-22 17:43:17

Glorianny

Zonne

Kath is a very traditional first name. One of Henry VIII’s wives was called Kath.

Weren't there 2 Katherine Parr and Catherine Howard?

There were (sort of) three.

Catherine of Aragon
Catherine Howard
Katherine Parr

I was thinking only the latter would be Kath with a K (she wouldn't really, of course, she'd be Kate if anything).

Jenn53 Tue 31-May-22 17:55:14

"Joseanne", you are absolutely right, it is not about them at all, but they are the ones I personally want to see. I am sure the Queen too will be happy to sit at home, feet up watching the spectacle on TV perhaps indulging her great-grandchildren whom she hasn't been able to see and having a giggle away from the shenanigans!

Joseanne Tue 31-May-22 18:01:16

I bet they're adorable Jenn53. The children always steal the show!

volver Tue 31-May-22 19:56:19

Just wondering if people are finding this whole thing completely mystifying? The whole thing about not supporting the monarchy and not wanting to indulge in flag waving and tri-colour cupcakes?

Is it a widespread belief that "everybody" loves/respects/admires the Queen so there will be no dissent whatsoever? Do you think that people are really surprised that the Republicans (and anti-party people wink) are more numerous than they thought?

Zoejory Tue 31-May-22 20:23:57

I'm quite happy with the RF, I'm not a flag waving fan but they don't bother me. I couldn't be bothered with being anti.

However I will say I'm surprised by how many people ARE getting very engaged with this celebration.

We live in a rural area but the village is having some shindig. Friends of mine who I thought would not be remotely interested are having/going to street parties. One of my daughters is getting quite involved with the local school/church.

So good luck to them. I have no interest in going to a party. I'll probably see the odd clips on TV. Quite like fly pasts. Not really my thing but I hope all involved have a wonderful time.

Don't take it to heart, Annie1
You may feel outnumbered on here but Gransnet is not representative of the country as a whole.
?

And this thread isn’t representative of GN as a whole. If you’re new, Annie1, welcome, and I hope you stick with us.

That's true, Maggiemaybe.

No. Nothing surprising about people going on about things they don’t like any more than people talking about things they do like.
Is it a widespread belief that “everybody” dislikes the monarchy and that nobody likes/respects/admires the Queen. I didn’t think so but if you know differently . . .

Lucca Tue 31-May-22 22:24:35

Who do you all want as Head Of State! Jeremy Corbyn?

Ridiculous comment.

harry and Meghan coming over merely to steal the limelight!

Ridiculous comment. How do you know ??

Good post. You may well be a conservative but you are able to see other points of view and talk sense ! Oh hope that doesn’t sound patronising…….I’m a bit too tired for expressing myself properly !

Thanks Lucca!?

A couple of my quite close friends are traditional Conservative voters, and very nice people they are too.

To put all Conservatives under one umbrella is plainly wrong - same as assuming all 'lefties' are Corbynites.

My Conservative MP wore his little Pantherella socks out campaigning to keep our local A&E department open (successfully) to avoid a 40+ mile journey to the next one... something that benefitted the elderly, and those without transport, or friends and family to help them. In other words, the more vulnerable locals. I spoke to him once - he really is a gentleman, and cares passionately about the community. And he always answers emails. To compare him with some of those currently, erm, in the news... is like comparing chalk with cheese.

Wow. I’m very much in the minority in gransnet but thankfully not in the real world. I think it’s fabulous to mark an historic event/achievement particularly given how crap the last few years have been to be able to have something positive for the country to celebrate together, idea of street parties, jubilee events to share in the community.

Hear, hear, I am in full agreement with you but everyone is entitled to their own thoughts on the matter.

Me and you will be waving our flags and raising our glasses of champagne ( lemonade !!! Hahaha)

I don't think you are ?

Anniel Wed 01-Jun-22 10:20:26

Lucca,

“Ridiculous comment” So you did not support Jeremy Corbyn? He was the chosen leader of the Labour Party! My MP, Tulip Siddiq voted for him. As she lived in my apartment block he visited. I think she regretted her vote. I am not sure whether you supported him, but the tenor of this thread could lead to that impression.

I do not believe that my comment about Harry and Meghan was ridiculous, but you have made the statement so it is up to you to give reasons for your opinion. Calling out another member of this group without any justification seems unfair to me.

You'd think so, reading any Jubilee threads, wouldn't you!!
You'd think those who are anti-Jubilee celebrations would just ignore it all ?
