Fellow Fashionista Grans: do you wear what you like or what you “should?”

I’m 72 and very short, aka, petite - love clothes and shoes, always have. There are tons of hints out there for petite women - avoid capris, ankle straps on shoes, chunky heels and lug soles - instead wear full length trousers or shorts, high heels, etc. Problem is trousers are too warm at times and my legs aren’t great for shorts, ankle straps help keep my shoes stable, and I can no longer comfortably walk in high heels. Do you follow “rules” for dressing your body shape or just wear what you love?

I think I have got where I want to be. Always fond of bright colours, no beige for me but I find I wear a lot of navy for everyday with a touch of colour.

I'm 5ft 3in and love my wide leg trousers. They are cool in summer and light. The trick is to get the right length and they certainly don't look silly. I'm currently altering a jumpsuit as I like the trouser part but not the top as I can't do it up and then can't get out of it!

^At 5'2" wide legged trousers look silly^

So be it, I look silly.

Same here Maw! wink

I just ordered a pair but hadn't seen anyone else in wide-legged trousers so was going to send them back.

What would you wear with them?

The trick is to get the right length
I've no clue what that might be ?
They're quite long

Wear what i like and feel comfortable in,much to the amusement of the men in my life,as in sons and g/sons.

I wear what I like.

I wear ankle grazers mostly if I am going out but love my jeggings for just round the house. So comfortable and that's my priority now.

M0nica

I wear what I like.

That's the problem!
I do usually but I can't make up my mind if I like the wide legged trousers or not.

I think you can break all the rules if you want to when you are older. Fashion is just an encouragement to buy new style clothing each year.
Above all I value comfort.

To a certain extent, in that I don't wear anything which I know will not suit my short stature or looks 'boxy' and make me look shorter and fatter, etc. So, yes I follow rules.

After all, we don't just wear clothes to cover our nakedness or to be warm, but also to create an 'image' of ourselves and to boost our self-esteem. That's my excuse, anyway.

If you're tall and slim!! ?

I will not wear wide leg trousers because, for me, they are a constant trip hazard.

No, Callistemon, you can do it no matter your shape and size. I soent last weekend at a Open University graduation ceremony. The proportion of overweight women present was quite remarkable. many were wearing those long flowing flowered dresses that are so fashionable this year and looking FABULOUS in them. Ditto those who had short skirts.

Nothing makes someone's size more obvious than draping it in widow's weeds, all black and droopy.

Callistemon21 Tue 31-May-22 19:40:22

I'll try them on again although tripping might be a consideration as I can trip over my own feet!

I never embraced the leggings/tight jeans fashion, just straight-legged trousers.

I wear jeans, T-shirt, trainers or boots with a jumper in the winter. Swop for shorts with flip flops in summer, if really hot I have a few long cotton/linen dresses. I’m 5’11, size 14/16. All about comfort, particularly to stay warm/cool, rarely buy clothing, only if it’s worn out. A couple of dresses were bought in French markets, not expensive I like cotton and a bit of bright colour.

I wear what I like and what I feel comfortable in. I do keep an eye on fashion and love clothes but rarely adopt trends unless they fit in with what I already like to wear. Most of my clothes are quite old but well looked after, haven't bought anything new except underclothes for nearly four years now.

Only if they are long enough (too long) and trail on the ground. .

M0nica Tue 31-May-22 21:45:34

It is not the length it is the flappy bits that wide trousers have, My leg catch on the flap on the other leg and suddenly slows me and I trip

Nanny27 Tue 31-May-22 22:52:40

I’m only 5’2 and love my wide legged linen trousers. I have 1 pair in black and 1 in dark blue. Both look good (I think) with a close fitting white t shirt and flip flops.

M0nica Wed 01-Jun-22 07:42:43

I love the look of wide-legged trousers, just cannot wear them without constantly tripping over them

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 01-Jun-22 08:10:47

I can’t walk in wide legged trousers. They somehow manage to get bunched up and like MOnica I trip over them.

I suppose lifestyle really dictates what I wear. So walking and gardening take up a large part of my day. This morning then was olive trousers, emerald green sweater and navy slightly padded jacket. Mistake to wear sandals as feet got wet?

Friday out to lunch so as it is forecast to be a warm day I shall put on a summer dress which will be a cobalt blue midi dress and matching cardigan. Summer sandals.

But really my life is spent in trousers from long to shorts and everything in between depending on the weather.

Working life gear bore no resemblance to what I wear now.

I have a very favourite wide legged trouser outfit which I’ve had for donkeys years. It never goes out of fashion as really it is evening wear. So it is a green silk trouser and matching silk top edged with white. A bit like a 1930s pyjama style outfit. It is incredibly comfortable and easy to wear.

Why can't you wear capris or crops? I am barely 5'3" I wear cropped leggings and stretchy capris (Roman) with long tops I hate trousers flapping round my ankles and/or having to shorten them. I avoid midi length dresses and buy petite fittings whenever i can. Small prints and no frills! I don't do baggy or droopy! Most of my shoes are flat, i like an ankle strap because i have weird heels and a strap with a heel feels safer.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 01-Jun-22 09:55:16

I’m 5 7 so perhaps it is easier to wear wide legged trousers?

M0nica Wed 01-Jun-22 13:24:14

i wear what I like and am comfortable in. I am 5 ft 2inches (was 5ft 4.5), but have long legs, so petite sized clothes tend to be the wrong shape for me and the trousers are always too short.

I wear midi dresses, including this summer's fashionable shape and style. My trip propensity means I have always worn low-heeled shoes and have made the descent flat shoes with glee.
