Just wondering if people sign out of GN, email, Duolingo or anything else you have to sign in to. I almost always do at the end of the day, and always when I've finished with internet banking. Does anyone know if there are any implications for being hacked (particularly email) if you don't?

I sign in - out, using my PWs each time I use my computer.

I always sign out of my three e-mail addresses every time I have used any of them.

Internet banking likewise.

After using my bank or any Government site, I clear my browser history as well.

As far as I know, both signing out, and clearing your browser history makes it harder for hackers to access our computors.

Thank you for this thread. Always good to have a shake up.

I turn the internet off at the browser every time....but maybe that's not enough.....!?

My banking and NHS apps log me out as soon as I come out of them, others stay logged in.

Always log out of anything financial and never save my card details with any regular company I purchase from either.

As for the rest, no, I cannot be bothered to keep signing in and out. There is nothing I do online, that i would be bothered if anyone read anyway. GN is in the public domain, as is Facebook, most of my email is transactional. Sharing information, commenting on stuff in the public domain. Nothing I would be embarrassed or ashamed of if someone else saw it.

Most things like internet banking actually time you out here ( which can sometimes be annoying but mostly a good thing ) Top right gransnet there is a little yellow logout box. Make sure you know your password to get back in.

How to log out of grans net please

Mollygo Tue 31-May-22 14:04:25

Internet banking, medical stuff, anything that involves money, always log out. My computer and devices are (different) password protected so sign out when I switch off.

I always log out of Facebook, because if you don't, it's easier for hackers to get into your account.

OakDryad, I don't believe there are any servers that cannot be compromised. However, complex passwords and two factor authentication are the best ways to ensure that you keep your data private. Also, if you use a password manager to log you in, you will not activate a key logger. A password manager also takes the worry out of remembering passwords if you choose to log out.

There are several types of key loggers, but some are based on hardware to capture your keystrokes and others are apps that you are tricked into downloading. The normal warnings about being careful when 'clicking' links applies. Having good anti-virus protection is essential.

As to whether or not you should sign out of websites, if you are confident that no-one you don't trust can access your device, I would say it doesn't really matter, you have to carry out your own risk assessment. If you shut down your device when you aren't using it, you add an extra layer of security when you put in your device password to open it as well.

Don't know what all the pass word hassle is about, I have no problem with signing in and out of Gransnet.

I also sign out of everything else, banking of course, that's a given, but online shopping, as well as all sites I use.

nadateturbe Mon 30-May-22 20:14:33

I sign out of amazon and my bank, tesco, etc. Not FB or GN

BlueBelle Mon 30-May-22 20:06:56

But why not just shut the computer and walk away joseanne wouldn’t that achieve the same and save all the password hassle ?

BlueSky Mon 30-May-22 19:52:29

Kircubbin you go to Settings, scroll down to your browser, scroll to ‘Clear history and website data’.

Joseanne Mon 30-May-22 19:10:55

Bluebelle I log out of GN when I feel exasperated and need to sit on my hands for a while!!
Then I forget what it was all about and log back in, if it lets me.

Esspee Mon 30-May-22 18:49:01

I only sign out of my internet banking and I also close down the page. I was asked if I closed the page by their security people when they were investigating an issue so now I do it. No idea why this is needed.
I can’t think why I should be concerned if any family members were able to read my posts. They are well aware of my views. In fact anyone who knows me could identify me on Gransnet.

Thanks, OakDryad. That's interesting and worrying! But helpful too. smile

You're welcome. It's a good argument for changing passwords frequently and having a different password for each site and app that you use. That at least minimises the risks if data is shared via malware.

One of the things we overlook is the degree of cross-application click-driven data sharing. GN is doing this. For example, I browsed a book thread here, many books I had never heard of. When I went to Amazon, same day, still logged into GN, there were all the books listed in "you might like". Facebook is probably the worst for this kind of thing. Your data is never safe with FB and why Zuckerberg has been fined billions of dollars for data breaches and is now facing another trial. That is definitely one to sign out of or not use at all if you can avoid.

BlueBelle Mon 30-May-22 18:28:36

May I ask why? of those saying they sign out of GN and other social media
Anyone doing Wordle I think you lose your streak if you clear history and cookies
No I don’t worry about my posts being read I know my eldest daughter who would be the one dealing with my stuff would not have the time or inclination to read my posts

lemsip Mon 30-May-22 18:26:16

I always log out of online banking but never GN for the simple reason I have forgotten my password and I think that is required to sign in again but I could be wrong.

Probably been said already but you don't need your PW for GN if you select " Save My Password" on the Sign In page, box below your email and * pass word.

I log out all the time, and Log In, by selecting Log In.

However if you don't select Save My Password" you will have to re-enter it.
