Thank you all, dear kitcheners, you are all so kind. Having decided that it was not the painting that was the issue but the Last Stand of the really not very bad cold that was making me feel grim, and after moaning on here, I felt a good deal more positive. Thank you again.
And then MrB made the tea. Well, my part was sawing a crusty cob loaf in half vertically and then one half (the other is frozen for the next cheese on toast treat) in half horizontally. I then had to find a way of balancing the thicker round-topped half on a grill pan so that it would toast evenly. A china chopstick rest came into play. MrB grated cheese, sliced onion, fried onion, asked for "just simple mixed herbs" when I offered Herbes de Provence. I said the label being in French did not make them unsimple, without telling him the jar had been refilled with Co-op's best 'simple' mixed herbs ?. It was all very pleasant and homey. Also delicious with a glass of some Old Vine Grenache that a friend had given us. There's something about bread and cheese and wine that never fails.

NannyTopsy, "just a bit creaky to I can walk 50yards in 18 months" sounds like a shockingly fast change! I hope you can keep up the slow walk for a long, long time. Hugs.
Blossoming, yes, the thought of the givings-up can weigh one down at times and, as you say, this kitchen is the place to come. It is a comfort to know one’s not always trying to bear up alone. Well, your comment was to me anyway, so thank you.
Lovely Cub badginess there for your DGS, brook. It reminded me of a pciture of Minibaggs with all her Cub badges at an event at Fordell Firs just before she moved up to scouts. Happy days. Have fun with your DGD’s Brownie uniform in due course but meanwhile, enjoy your walking holiday/challenge.
Grandmabatty, ear-aches are some of the worst pains. I hope your GS gets over his asap.

I’ve to be up early tomorrow so I’ll be off to bed soon. Thank you again to everyone who commented and so helped me over a bit of an outburst, an "accumulation", as Jax sort of put it, and into a tired but relieved evening. Kitcheners are great ?
