If “contentment” is as good as it gets, you seem to be missing out.
Contentment is my dog snuggling up beside me on the sofa - there is a world of difference between passion and contentment.

Discontentment comes from comparing self with others. Obviously we all need basics like food and shelter.

Good point Henetha, that it's contentment not 'happiness' that is up for discussion.

Maw the Merrier. I agree. Good sex event is followed by temporary sensation of restful satisfaction. Same as good food.

Restful satisfaction is physical whereas contentment is best and most reliable when it is bound up in beliefs about life and how I live it.

Being on my own, not expecting anyone to call and just being able to get on with anything I want to do. I hate unexpected visitors.

Peace and quiet, a good book, my cat beside me, a mug of coffee and no demands on me while I read. Gardening, enjoying my roses that I planted, a visit to our local coastline and a long walk. All things that cost next to nothing but which I find give me lots of contentment.

Nothing particular I have to do
Nowhere particular I have to go,
Not worried about anything or anybody,
Sofa or chair in the garden, good book, cup of tea.
And preferably dh around to bring me another cup of tea/answer the door if any annoying person tries to interrupt my peace.

Being with my seven year old granddaughter. Gardening. The best, gardening with my granddaughter.

Being a member of GN and being able to chat with you all, laugh at funny stories and commiserate with you on sad things. Knowing I can pop in or out at any time, day or night!

My family. Just knowing they're there and they love me as much as I love them!

My crafts, which can change at any time depending on my mood!

Knowing I have good neighbours, even if we don't know each others names and don't actually mingle that often!

And so many other things.

For me it’s the simplest things, usually nature based, like the view across the valley on my regular dog walk when there’s mist rising from the brook. Watching the birds in the garden, raindrops on flower and growing plants in the garden and greenhouse.
I get contentment from sitting reading too, with a big mug of coffee or knitting while listening to an audiobook or podcast.
Seeing my DGCs and listening to them chatting away.
So many things that I am blessed with but probably don’t appreciate anywhere near enough ?

For me, contentment is an overall state, rather than just specific moments. I am fortunate that at the present time, I do not have any major health or financial worries, that I have good relationships with my family, that I can do things I enjoy and that make me happy.

I agree with this comment. I have a generally contented life but the best moments are when there are happy moments too, like that overall feeling of peace when watching the birds in my new nature-friendly garden, having a lovely cup of freshly ground coffee after a task of some sort, coming back from a short walk to the shops having said good morning to several people and sometimes that develops into a chat with a stranger

What a ridiculous thing to say Maw. Get off your high horse.

Despite family esteangement, I am quite contented, if that’s the correct word. To know my family are leading the lives they worked for and wanted is everything to me. Wish my dh was here but that’s just silly of me. So all in all I am quite happy.

I have no idea who you mean by my so-called “in crowd” - it doesn’t exist.
But to be boasting about sex on a site with many widowed members, some very elderly, others with serious or life--limiting conditions was shallow and cruel.

Not to mention at least two members I know of who are nursing terminally ill husbands - a little tact and consideration might have gone a long way.

I’m not boasting but I guess that suits your narrative.
I was widowed at a very early age and know what it’s like to nurse a dying spouse so spare me the shallow and cruel jibe.

Holding my husband’s hand before we go off to sleep at night in the knowledge that our family are all fine in their own lives.

Working in my garden, especially if the sun is out. Walking or just sitting surrounded by beautiful scenery.

I have to agree with you Jax. Your post brought back a lovely memory as we used to do that.
